I work in customer service, this is literally every rant I have with my friends and family about the car rental business, how people simply ignore contracts that they willingly signed (and didn't bother to read through) calling them unfair or a rip-off after the service was already provided because they want to keep the car longer for less money.

I had a 19 minute ngannou rant this morning. Chael one upped me. Undisputed.

If you have the power to wield, it’s in your own interest as a fighter to do. It’s subjectively silly to suggest otherwise. He signed a contract. He fulfilled the contract (so far as we know). If there’s contractual additions baked in once you win a title, that’s another story but until it’s confirmed publicly, we atleast know he completed his original fight count. Your analogy works only if you tweaked it : which ironically, is accurate today. It’s like selling a $14k car in an environment with a chip shortage, much like today. Wheee dealerships are selling 40% above MSRP, much like today. It’s trickled into used cars as well. If you use the blue book value, much like I did today, on my car and get offered that value only to have the dealership turn around and weaponize the chip shortage to their benefit via my commodity I just agreed to without my knowledge of their ability to up charge, I’d be more likely to negotiate this next time I sell a car. Francis understands his value and his rising tide. He is one of those 3 earners who can say I want to make sure I get my slice. It isn’t personal . Never was. Is the dealership wrong to up charge based on a shortage? No , it’s simple economics. Was I mad when I found out? Nope, simply that I didn’t know to improve my share. But the next car when I demanded ~20% above knowing they’d likely go well beyond that, you’d think they’d laugh me out of the room right? Interesting they didn’t. The dealership won’t give you anything you don’t ask for. If Francis carried no weight, you think Dana would let this charade continue? Or are they going to begrudgingly accept their dip into profits bc one guy knew his car was a lot more valuable in todays market? Seems like a fair play all around.

Chael is right. The fighter has to renegotiate AT the negotiations. Don't sign a 6+ fight deal if you're not willing to fulfill the contract. From the fighter's perspective, the only reason they sign a long fight contract is to GUARANTEE themselves employment/money. They don't have the confidence to sign a 2 fight deal and then if they win big they have the leverage, cause the reverse is also true. Basically they want the UFC to hedge themselves against the risk, and demand the ability to renegotiate to get all the reward. People say Dana is a "greedy" business man, yet most employees/workers are more greedy than an entrepreneur could ever be

When I read that Francis expects to renegotiate the multi fight contract that he signed after every single fight, I had the same reaction as Chael. I did. FROM MY COUCH. I can only imagine how Lord Chael, a retired fighter, must REALLY feel.

If the dealer bought it for $1 and sold it to you for $15k, then you’re no more ripped off than if the dealer paid $100k but sold to you for $15k. If it cost them $1500 to clean up & fix the trade in for resale at a competitive price to similar vehicles in the market, then everyone got a fair deal by definition. It just doesn’t feel that way for the person who only sees their one piece of that story and isn’t financially responsible for any of the rest. Coming from someone who has sold cars, been a dealership car buyer, and has worked for credit unions analyzing loan applications for fair purchase prices for the consumer. There are a few flaws in your argument. First of all, most of those 500 other fighters are expendable and can be signed to what are essentially form contracts with little negotiation, so Dana's not spending time in the booth with any of them. That leaves you with maybe 30ish fighters who have enough leverage to merit more extensive negotiations. Second, when you're a star, it's only rational to use that as leverage to make a better deal for yourself. Connor negotiated profit sharing into his contract, as he should have. If you feel you can maximize value for yourself by doing one-fight deals then you should try to negotiate for it. You're still carrying your own downside risk because your value may fall after any given fight. The situation you seem to be describing is one where you sign a 7 fight deal and want to renegotiate it after fight 3. In that case, I can see your point. But that isn't applicable here because Ngannou's contract is up.

" You only buy from a Dealer " is the WILDERST SHIT YOU EVER SAID!! LoL I have personaly, i swear on my grandas grave, owned 58 cars in my life, all of them I bought private or from a dealer auction. I admit, I did have a dalers license, but i still bought from private. Why??? The Dealer is ALWAYS gonna mark the price up by like 30%, even dealer to dealer they don't hook you up. Out of my 58 cars I have had ONE SINGLE LEMON!! One! Now....maybe up north with all the snow, that is a different issue, but down south, never ever ever buy from a dealer if you can find what you want private party.

The problem is that Ngannou signed a contract for a set number of fights, which he fought, and then Dana says "Okay great, but since you won the championship, the contract says you have to keep fighting indefinitely for the same purse until you lose". Now, Francis makes a decent amount of money per fight since he's the champion. He gets $600K to show, $600K to win, plus his participation cut. That's a lot of money. But here's the thing -- if Conor McGregor, a guy who has zero title defenses, and currently holds no title, and is ranked 14th in his division (and even that is REALLY generous) fights on the same card, he'll earn more than Ngannou. If Nate Diaz comes back to the UFC, despite never having been a champion, despite not being ranked in any division, he will earn more than Ngannou. Paddy Pimblett, who has all of three fights in the UFC, makes more per fight than Ngannou if you take out the participation cut. And until Ngannou loses the heavyweight championship, that can't change, because his contract says it can't. I don't blame him for wanting to renegotiate his contract, because it's a shitty contract once he becomes champion and keeps winning, but that's why Dana is a billionaire and no fighter in the UFC comes close. Also, no one's saying the UFC can't make money. But most professional sports leagues (eg - NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL, MLS) split the revenues close to 50/50 with the athletes. The UFC splits revenues 15/85 in favour of the UFC. That sounds like exploitation to me.

MMA is the perfect model of life. In the hair cutting business, Hair Cuttery or something like that. You can get a guarantee per hour or a percentage of the revenue (which may be high or low or nothing). The choice is yours. If you get a guarantee, don't complain if it is low. If you get a percentage, don't complain if the business is slow. You cannot have it both ways.

Nice chat, but ripping off athlete's consistently with under pay and contracts where UFC has all the leverage is not like trading in a $17k car for $14k - it is like trading a $50k car for $14k - and having a clause that with your next 5 cars you still have to come back and do the same deal. And, if after 5 cars you get lucky and own a classic special car (i.e. are a champion) you still can't go to other dealers.

Speaking solely for myself... Francis is a rare case. I love to watch him in and outside of the octagon. It would be a damn shame if they can't come to deal. I would lose A LOT of interest in the hw division if ngannou gets tossed aside. If he competes elsewhere... I'll follow him as a fan. But chael is right. We've seen this play out 100 times before. The difference is that most of those guys who took their ball and went home because they didn't get a BIG contract renegotiation... I didn't care about them. I do about francis.

I agree with his overall point but I disagree with a portion of his car dealership rationale. There's an ethical percentage margin to make on a trade-in and most people will okay if it is reasonable. They make roughly 5-15% on new cars and they're expected to run their entire business on that margin. Why must you now make 20%-50% on my trade in? Let's keep the margin the same because that's the margin you agreed to with the manufacturer to run your business on. If you can't, your operational costs are too high due to poor optimization. Don't pass off your greed and/or business incompetence to the buyer and expect us to be okay with it.
