Are you looking to learn how to drift? This video covers why you should start drifting on a sim racing setup before you buy an actual drift car. I've received a lot of questions at events from people interested in learning how to drift, so in this video I talk a bit about my recommendations as well as my experiences transitioning from a driving simulator like Assetto Corsa to the real thing. Learning how to drift can be extremely expensive from the cost of buying/building a car, to burning through tires, and ongoing maintenance. Take my advice and you'll save a ton of money in the long run.
Topics in this video:
0:00 Intro
0:43 Some of My Drift Event Costs (Tires are Expensive)
1:16 The Pitch for Sim Racing
1:34 My Transition from Sim Drifting to Real Life
2:41 My First Lap on a Real Drift Track
3:19 Drifting on My Home Sim Setup
3:37 Closing Thoughts
My Story *********************
In 2022 I purchased a 2007 Nissan 350z to start attending my first drift events, and I've learned quite a bit along the way. The community has been great and I'd very much like to pay it forward and help anyone looking else looking to get into drifting for the first time. Any burning questions as someone wanting to learn how to drift? Send them my way and I'll either respond or cover in a future video.
This video is part of a continuing series that covers my transition from sim to the real thing more in-depth, including tips and tricks, building my car, and so on.

Good points and it's actually even better, when you consider how much people try to do street drifting, where they can hurt them self's easier, and maby even other people who were around at that moment... You save a lot of money doing the sim racing, but you still gain some experience out of it, that helps you later on with real world events! Good video!

Yeah for sure. It's a big initial investment for a lot of folks to buy a sim setup but in the long run I will have saved myself thousands on tires, wear on the car, event entry fees, and so on. Definitely thought to myself at points "should I go find an empty parking lot to get some IRL practice?" but really there's nothing I can do on the street that will be more valuable than my time on sim. It's really pretty amazing.

Great video! Glad to have yet another example of someone going from simulator to real life and killing it with both! Hopefully I'll do the same one day!

Love that you don't take yourself too seriously. Just found your channel and it's great to see you learn to drift in sim and translate that IRL. As a new sim-only drifter but an avid track day guy, I think it's awesome you've taken sim skills and proven they apply IRL. Keep up the great work!

Appreciate it! Sim definitely works on the track side too. My dad and I used to autocross together and once I started doing sim he couldn't keep up with me anymore. Just convinced him to build a sim rig with a PC this year.

Finally someone said this and actually put it in practice. I did not wanted to put so much money on a car and mods without knowing this. But now I have to buy some mods for my virtual sim setup LOL You are pretty cool and smart for doing that, thank you so much!

I love this this is tight I just now randomly stumbled upon this channel and got excited because I spent a couple of years where I had a very LARGE amount of time drifting on assetto and content manager to the point where i probably shouldnt be proud of it. But you honestly can learn a ton about suspension setups and all the different stuff you can adjust. I was Absolutely clueless to it all. Even just freeballin it through trial and error and then actually seeing a difference in your runs I was like hold up let me do an obsessive amount of research I'm still fully convinced that I will be able to just hop in a drift car and drift

Well I can confirm that it works lol. Hard part is funding a drift project, easy part is moving from sim to real life.

I just got a G23 from my girlfriend and I pretty much jumped into assetto corsa and started learning how to drift and one of my friends was like “please don’t tell me u want to learn how to drift in the game so you can drift in real life. It’s not the same thing” and i was like “ yeah obviously it’s not the same thing, you don’t have the same immersion(or atleast i don’t on my poor setup) but mechanics are real life-like “and this video inspires me to continue my virtual practice. Keep it up with your vids they are great!🤩☝🏻

Awesome - Only part I'm going to rain on your parade with is that wheel, I'd definitely look to upgrade when you can afford it. The logitech stuff unfortunately spins too slow so you'll likely struggle more going from that to the real thing.

Wasn't bothered by the clickbait, since I came from a FB group. Nice points. In my experience who tried to drift in assetto with a T150 and had trouble and tried to drift in snow irl wich is much easier, but I also fucked up my car so there comes in the money aspect lol

Going to share in a future video but when I first started driving (15+ years ago) I had an fwd toyota and thought I was the drift king yanking the ebrake in the rain. Then ate a curb and got a real quick reality check 😄 Have heard people say drifting in real life is easier, they've felt pretty similar to me thus far though.

@@JankyDrift Yeah, for me with FWD i could have got into trouble, but somehow didn't. later i got an e36 (120hp) that's when ate shit. Run out of angle, tire and most of all talent and came the curb. Valuable lesson :D

I am definitely following your path on a short track. Got back into sim racing earlier this year and decided to build the rig into a drift main setup. I am not at the level where I can drift all the high power cars abut I'm very comfortable with WDT street cars. Went for an E36 last month and have been building it as a drifter seat time car since. I still have ways to go with a lot of welding needs which is what I'm also learning, but I'm looking forward to taking it out to track. Are you in the east coast? Video looks like you were at Lanier. I'm aiming to have the car ready for next year
@JankyDrift
@JankyDrift Год назад
On sim I mainly drive stock-ish powered cars because I figure I'm realistically not going to own a full pro or pro-am car at any point in the near future. Prefer DWG but mainly wind up running WDTS cars online since those are the most active servers. Wish I had some welding skills too, but good luck with the build! Lanier was one of the tracks in the video, been primarily running there but have done a few iTrack events at silver dollar and a few random events at Midpond in Alabama. Actually moving up to the northeast though towards the end of the year.

How is forcefeedback on T300 with adapter and market steering wheel? Are you losing acceleration from base due to that market wheel or its better than with original wheel from thrustmaster?
@JankyDrift
@JankyDrift Год назад
Apparently I never responded to this. The FFB does feel weaker with a larger diameter steering wheel, and you probably lose some rotation speed as well, but I just turn FFB up to compensate. That said, the bigger wheel adds a lot in terms of immersion so I'd definitely recommend.

you may already be useing it but for the revarb or any wmr headsets on ac you can use OpenComposite to bypass steamvr. it basicly converts open vr to openxr the wmr can run natively making the ac on the revarb run as good as my quest 2 did will haveing higher settings. if you need info on it just meg me
@JankyDrift

I had no idea this was a thing, might have to hit you up because I've got my steam resolution turned down to 70% with a 3070 GPU, plus graphics settings turned down to get a stable 90fps.

@@JankyDrift i do get stuters some with my 3070ti but thats cus my cpu is holding it back. i get 80 to 90 but with steam vr it way worst. also pure runs a litte bit better than sol its worth the $1 mouth on Peter Boese patreon.

yeah definitely, especially coz you got it up and running. currently im running with a 2011 325i but since buying it about 1.5 years ago it's had a misfire issue, and a high pressure fuel pump issue, misfire was able to be fixed but this fuel pump issue just wont go away and it's rendered the car un-drivable for the past few months. Really annoying since a bunch of parts have already been replaced and yet it still happens lol. hopefully itll be fixed soon though and i'll finally take it to its first track day. Just annoying that its taken this long due to all the issues. (car drove fine too for like the first 2 or so months)@@JankyDrift
