Ever wonder how much smaller creators make in ad revenue on RU-vid? This video looks back on my first full year on RU-vid, and how much money I made from ad revenue and affiliate sales over that time. If this is your first video of mine, this channel has thus far primarily followed my journey transitioning from drifting on the game Assetto Corsa to my first time on a real drift track. In the video I talk about some of the struggles I've faced as a small motorsports and gaming channel trying to build my following on RU-vid. This includes talking about the gear I bought to start the channel, the money I've spent to promote the channel with RU-vid ads, and the cost for content creation within the automotive category.
Overall, just sharing my experience from my first year as a content creator on RU-vid, as well as some advice for other new creators. As with anything else it's had ups and downs, but looking forward to another year of Janky Drift.
Topics in this video:
0:00 Intro
0:30 What is drifting - And a quick overview of the channel
1:30 How much money I made in RU-vid ad revenue
2:37 Expenses - Camera Gear and other equipment
3:34 Expenses - Running RU-vid ads to market new channels
4:35 Expensive - The cost of creating content for RU-vid
6:39 Calculating my actual RU-vid profits after expenses
7:26 Some advice for new creators
8:00 Closing thoughts
My Story *********************
In 2022 I purchased a 2007 Nissan 350z to start attending my first drift events, and I've learned quite a bit along the way. The community has been great and I'd very much like to pay it forward and help anyone looking else looking to get into drifting for the first time. Any burning questions as someone wanting to learn how to drift? Send them my way and I'll either respond or cover in a future video.

Nice to actually watch a drifting channel that I don't need to sell my soul in order to do what he is doing, thanks for the breakdown

Very interesting video topic! Sometimes I find that big automotive channels lack sensible builds, which their viewers could realistically also do. On another topic: I know that I've asked before, but I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on BeamNG as compared to Assetto Corsa, for pure fun, and for simulation/practice.

Seems like the general vibe is that sensible builds aren't as "fun" to watch vs the crazy stuff. Funny you should ask on beam, in the process of writing a script for a video on beam vs Assetto. Should hopefully be out in the next few weeks.

I love your channel, I subbed for your personnality. It's sad to realize it's not enough nowadays to make a living out of it.

Appreciate it! Yeah it's unfortunately what's created a lot of the annoying modern day RU-vid trends with unnecessarily long videos and cringey ad segments. If you don't do that kind of stuff it's hard to make enough to focus on the channel full time.

That was really well put together, dopamine levels stayed high thanks to the fast speech, and it wasnt boring as something kept happening on screen

Very helpful video. Keep it up man. I struggled to manage time and personal life with going to the track and spending all this money and finding time to edit these videos. It’s ridiculous when you’re doing it by yourself. You’re exactly right. When you say you can’t compete with the big dogs just have to do it for fun.

My dude you gotta find somewhere better to drift that not's the Philadelphia eagles parking lot lol. You run any of the local events (E-Town, Readset, Evergreen)? If you do, come say what's up.

As a small car content RU-vidr your points were incredibly relevant. I recently hit monetization and made my first $100 but my "loss" has been more like $10K. As you say it's a hobby and I would have spent most of that anyways, so ya consider your premise pretty much confirmed 😂

Ha. Yeah its rough trying to get your foot in the door. Threw you a sub. Between this year and last I'm about $30k into drifting at this point but I try not to think about it so I can sleep at night lol.

Great vid, Jank. I'm in the very early days of my own channel so it's very much about making videos that I want to make and trying to grow my audience as much as I can. I think the stuff that you're talking about here is a great example of why channels (once they get to a certain size) should start a patreon or similar. I've never understood the backlash or anger that some people have when a creator that they watch makes one, I think they're just supremely ignorant about the work that goes into good quality youtube content.

Yeah best thing you can do is just try and have fun with it in the beginning and don't get hung up on how many views each video is getting. I've had a handful that didn't gain traction until they were posted for a month or two. I've debated a lot about the monetization part. Was originally going to make my discord a patreon perk and had a few other ideas that I'm not ready to share publicly but always feel like its a fine line to walk as a small creator. Worried that the money ask is going to drive people away especially with the channel being so small, but I legit probably spent 20-30 hours on this video all things considered. It's like a part time job that I have to pay to work at the moment lol. Hit me up if you need any pointers or have any questions while getting set up! Threw you a sub.
