This may not help every new raider, but something that helps me learn/study before going into a fight is shadowing a clear video on a training dummy. I put a clear video on one monitor and then play on the other. As DSR was my first ultimate figuring out timing of my scholar mits was very daunting. Watching a clear video and "playing along" on a practice dummy helped me learn where/when/how to throw things to best aid my group! Its something I always recommend no matter the role because there will always be some downtime that will change cooldown timing, rotational planning, mit planning, etc. I wish all new players the best on their raiding journey

overall i think this is good advice but i have a few things 1. I don't think it was discussed about there being PF data centers so it is absolutely crucial to be on the right DC to PF. I'm not sure how EU works but for NA it will be impossible to pf outside of Aether. 2. It's widely accepted to stop your dps rotation (for tanks and healers too) when a mechanic is getting the best of you. The pressure to be so good at your class that you can do it with your brain off even during stuff the first time you see it is not real. 3. I think it's important to discuss when to decline a static. Newer players should not be trying to jump thru hoops for statics. Just find one that's accepting of people newer to raiding, and for reference that should be all of them who aren't looking to fast prog everything. Referencing the first point made, it ain't that deep its actually really easy and almost all mistakes savage related mistakes a newer player makes to raiding is usually corrected in under one lock out and now theyre set for life. 4. Don't adjust your irl schedule for a static. It's not worth it and adds extra stress to your life and you will feel extra pressure during raid. 5. Towards the end of the video it sorta turned into more of a video on how run a static and while useful, is kind of more information overload on someone just looking to join one. Highly recommend not trying to run a static to get into raiding there is a steep learning curve with people and it can cause you additional unhelpful and unneeded stress!
@Esvald
@Esvald Месяц назад
Light is EU's Aether, all the raiding's basically on Light.
@katarh
@katarh Месяц назад
I'm genuinely hoping they "fix" this issue of "you must go to Aether (or Light) to raid." Having everyone pile onto one data center for raiding is destroying the purpose of having separate data centers in the first place, which is to spread the number of instances in use out and not overload the instance server. With everyone piling onto Aether, we're just making it laggier for EVERYONE including people who aren't even raiding. Remember Raubhan Ex when StB first came out? That was the case of the instance server literally running out of instances available. Everyone piling onto Aether for the purpose of PF raiding is doing the exact same thing - and at some point during DT we're going to hit the instance cap if everyone is trying to prog the first Savage tier at the same time. I realized how ridiculous it had gotten when, after my semi-static hopped over to Aether to fill out our PF with 3 more people once, we realized that we'd picked up 3 more people FROM PRIMAL who had also all hopped to Aether. We could have just stayed on Lamia! One simple tweak to fix this would be forcing the person who initiates the instance to be a "native" to the DC. So you have a valid reason to hop DCs (joining a static based in that DC) and you're not simply hopping DCs because that's what everyone collectively decided that we have to do.

As someone who is about to clear his first ultimate, that being uwu (almost at annihilation, odds are high it'll happen today) I can confidently say, even before watching the video I wanna add: Just watch a guide or two, focus on your specific Role (Tank, Healer, Melee, Ranged) take some very simple notes, or even just key words, and go for it in PF. You'll not see those players again very likely and getting progess yourself/seeing the fight is worth it, even if just for 3 pulls Edit: I cleared I have become an Ultimate Legend. I am still nervous and mess up at Ultima with a lot of Mechs but my point still stands. Just do it guys. Watch guides, hop into pf and prog. Just, don't lie too much or get lost in overconfidence like most and go into a Jails Prog party when you can't even do Ifrit dashes

I had one guy flame me in one of the Heavensward final dungeons as I was still learning the mechanics but doing my best to stay alive... He was the one dying back to back but I was the "problem". He ended up rage quitting leaving me and our tank and healer alone in a 3 man. Thankfully I took the time to talk to the two that stayed to get tips on the boss and we ended up 3 manning it with ease on the first attempt cause I felt super confident in my NIN playstyle and just focused on dodging mechanics since I had gotten the timing down already. I definitely felt the love after that as we sent each other friend requests even though we were on different servers.

I dunno how common this is across DCs and Worlds, but when I go into PF looking for people clearing old content I often see the same faces a lot. It's fun to run into familiar names as you go through clearing fights even if I'm not very chatty - specially if those people are clearly trying to perform well and not being salty and weird. My experiences trying current content in PF haven't been as great, but clearing the backlog has been a great time!

@sird31mos
@sird31mos Месяц назад
UWU to DSR is a fairly big leap, but current tier to DSR isn't unreasonable. You should be able to acclimate to it either way if your party is patient and communicative. The biggest way DSR and TOP differ from other raids is that they have a higher order of randomization for mechanics with few role-based ones, so everyone needs to memorize multiple permutations and be able to play their job at the same time. But since you mentioned TEA: if you can get past BJCC with any consistency, you can absolutely do anything in DSR. Just expect it to be harder on your endurance.

Wonderful video! As someone who never expected to raid ever, was suddenly dragged into my first raid (P1S) with only 5 hours warning ahead of time I am now addicted to high-end raiding. I'm working on my first UWU clear now and having a blast! (Annihilation prog!) Something I do for sprout friends too is we try (as an FC) to fill a group of people we know and run content with them so that if they are trying on a new job or hotbar layout or want to learn the class, we can take it slow, pause and discuss/answer questions. We also will communicate when we are trying a bigger pull or if the sprout is missing something or etc so that they get used to the ebb and flow of the average run of any given content. I think, for a future video, what might be a fun topic to cover is maybe a video or series of videos of how to play more efficiently for supports-- tips and tricks for when and what kinds of mit to use (tank), healing skill priority and learning how to choose what heals when (healers). A lot of new players I see either make the mistake of using not enough or WAY too much irt both of these sets of skills and I think teaching that spamming Medica II when your party is only missing 10% of their health would be super helpful to those learning haha.

I started doing Savage and Ultimates at the beginning of Endwalker. I was a Shadowbringers baby who loves playing DRK and was too stubborn to do anything else. But I decided to try taking the plunge into the hard content and boy did I learn so much! It took my group 8 weeks to clear the first tier, but we slowly improved and cleared the second tier in 4. And the third was dead in 3. In that time I slowly learned how to play DRK much more proficient and to be more active as well as learn to play other jobs! I’ve also become a quad legend as of now, penta very soon once I clear UCOB. My lack of ability was obvious when I first started but now looking back at how I was then to how I am now I can see the improvement! My advice to anyone wanting to start is you CAN do it 100% as long as you have the want to learn and improve! If I can do it, then anyone can!

I wish I had this video 2.5 years ago when I started raiding (yet not sure I would have appreciated it as much at the time). Literally most of the advice you gave I found out the hard way XD. Found myself nodding all the way through. Still learned some new things though. I think one of the biggest things I learned in the process is how important it is to be at a similar skill level, mentality and motivation as your raid team. Without this balance between players there are varying expectations, people getting frustrated when others can't keep up and having to drag some individuals across the line. For me, I started raiding with my FC and we were all fresh so at the start it was good. However, as we progressed, different players got better faster, and some reached their ceiling sooner than others. For some this ceiling was P4S, where I had to replace half the raid team mostly because they had lost motivation and morale. With the new team we pushed into DSR after that, and boy did that fight teach me so much about the game. When we started it, I didn't realize how much we still had to learn.... and once again it revealed to us who had hit their ceiling and who were still getting better. 6months went by, morale was low, we'd seen DKT once and then regressed since then... same people wiping the same way every session. I ended up clearing in PF and while I tried to get the group over the line after that, it just didn't work out. Regression has to be the most depressing thing to go through in a raid group. I had to end it there and go my own path. I still raid with some of them to this day but I now have a deep understand how important it is to be on the same page as your team in skill, motivation and expectations... oh and availability also, it really sucks wanting to raid more if you're in a group that can't raid more. It's not their fault but you need to find what works for you.

That "must have experience to join" mostly just applies to statics, and you can definitely get raiding experience before joining a static. You can join any PF as long as you've unlocked the duty, meet the minimum gear level requirement (if they have one), and will fit into one of the job/role slots. Sure, if you don't know the basics of your job or haven't read/watched any guides up to your prog point, the party will be annoyed with you, but you don't need to have raided before to get a decent raid experience. The key is just doing your homework before going into the fight. People are generally polite about giving feedback as long as you're asking good questions and genuinely trying to learn. You do get the occasional asshole in PF, but FFXIV's raiding scene is fairly good-natured overall, and it's miles less toxic than WoW from what I've heard. In all of my UWU prog and clear parties, I've only met one actual flaming asshole who overreacted to people's mistakes. Everyone else was pretty reasonable, neutral, or straight up friendly and encouraging, even to people who needed more help on mechanics than others. So it's not really that exclusive in the PF scene.

Used to WF raid in Wildstar, and have hardcore raided in WoW since WotLK. This is by far one of the best videos I have ever watched on not just *how* to get started raiding, but the mentality when doing so. I returned to the hobby for WoW's last expansion and had a pretty poor experience because of the biggest issue you mentioned here - a disconnect between what others in the group were looking for and what I was. Its *okay* to shop around and to say no to the first option that presents itself. There is no shortage of groups, but there *is* a fear that comes with putting yourself out there. Make your time valuable and invest in finding the right group for you.

The main things I would recommend are to: Watch a guide on the raid you want to do before you do it. It helps a lot to know what you're going to be facing before you actually do it. Let people know you're new to the raid before it starts. If you haven't done the raid before, you'll get an intro cinematic playing for you before the raid can start for anyone. I use this time to type a quick message to my alliance saying that I haven't done the raid before and people have actually given me tips on what to do for the boss fights! Lastly just take the plunge and dive in! I know it's scary and nerve-wracking. I'm a White Mage sprout myself who's never healed in an mmo ever, so I know how scary it can be. But after you clear the raid the first time, it gets much easier to do it over and over again. Will you always be perfect? No. But neither is everyone else and both of you will mess up at one stage or another. But that's how we learn and get better at this!

I had issues with my rotations, I took a long time to understand mechanics, etc. Typical sproute issues. I didn't try savage raiding again until a month or 2 after Abyssos dropped. A few months later I cleared the tier, I was leading a static of my own, and as of a few weeks ago cleared my first ultimate. There's something about proving someone wrong that just feels great. regarding call outs: We're one of the semi-statics (4-5 for people that fill out with PF players as needed) that invite folks to voice chat, and what we've found is having a custom funny mechanic that is descriptive is often more helpful than the in game mechanic name. An example in P10S - the mechanic is "towers." But there are two types of towers, the ones that are immediately followed up by a Circle or Holy (in or out) AND have the mini donut or AOE around each tower afterward. We nicknamed these "Matrix Towers" - as in, you must peer into the matrix, to describe the cascade of events and split second decisions that occur afterward. Then there's the pinball section with normal and cursed pattern. These too are towers, but since they're followed by the pinball BS, we nicknamed that one "BS towers." - Every PF pick up has immediately grasped this combination of funny description + clarification of the mechanic, and taken it over for them. We've also stolen the phrase "tank business" from GG to describe tank buster + tank swap mechanics, because it neatly sums up that it's only a mechanic for the tanks and the rest of the raid team can focus on DPS and healers can worry about healing. (P10S tank towers became "tank yeets" because.... once again, descriptive + funny and everyone immediately knows what it is.) Anyway, we're proud of our bingo square on your PF bingo cards. Hope y'all have fun playing with us too 😁

So when Eden's Verse was still relevant content and we were in the middle of lockdown, I did throw caution to the wind and actually attempt a Savage tier. It was a lot of fun, and despite being nervous, I went through to clear E5, 6, and 7S (not 8 because that was a hell of itself). This eventually lead to me attempting to clear an Ultimate (UCoB) which I still haven't not done, but do yearn to do one day, even if it isn't that one. The biggest enemy I just have to deal with is time.

I feel very seen as a 100% casual game , who was a 100% casual gamer all her life, and had a bad encounter with another WHM who was unbelievably mean to me (while I was asked to help her raiding party, being given 30 minutes to learn E9S - while having no Savage experience). That encounter led me to start to raid out of sheer spite, and my spite fueled me to clear every single Savage fight on content since E9s. and become a Triple Legend (currently at P6 in DSR). I would like to attest to the sheer power of spite.

I started playing during 2.2 and I remember having a lot of fun trying to clear Ultima's Ballad (though I wasn't successful) using party finder. Then HW came out, Bismarck, I don't know what the issue was, but getting the tank swap during the snakes was REALLY tough for me. Eventually, got to try Thordan EX and that's when I gave up on trying to clear EXs during the same expansion, only with Echo during future expacs... Plus I just really struggle remembering fights with a lot of mechanics. For whatever reason I could handle Normal Exdeath no problem during Omega, but other fights my brain just... forgets.

Still got a lot of video to go, so hopefully it'll change my mind, but rather than being scared, my personal hangups are tied to my adhd and to my inability to parse out complex placements/movements and react in a split second. General savage and extremes have never been overly difficult for me, but it's the ultimates I want to get into. Back when variant dungeons came out I attempted the hard version, and despite my every attempt, looking at every guide I could get my hands on, attempting to draw out the possible permutations and quiz myself on them during lulls at work, I just could. not. figure. out. The second big attack Silkie does. It refused to click and I never once was able to solve where I needed to run and what direction I needed to face in the couple seconds I needed to act. So hearing that the ultimates involve ever more randomly assigned, complicated, solve in a second mechanics has made me feel that I'll never be able to clear them. As for my other hangups, my brain tends to become obsessed with things in three day chunks. So I'll be pumped to try to study to attempt uwu, maybe try to squeeze in a starter prog from pf (with no luck because I play during NA's deadest hours), and by about then my brain loses interest and cringes away from thoughts of touching the game. So I take a break, and by the time I come back months later all my knowledge has faded away and I'm back at the start. This has happened like three times already, and I'm afraid it'll never get better. I'm sure this was frustrating to read and sounds like excuses, well it's just as frustrating to live it, I promise you. Gonna keep watching now!

The worst part in pf raiding in Aether is the trap groups that will say prog point 4, but you see them super struggling on prog point 2 (which should be engrained in you mind at that point) and if the group survives to lockout you might see prog point 4 a couple of times.

Your video resonated a lot with some of my experiences with extremes savage. Coming from another MMO where I had "an okay" performance as a DPS, I thought raiding FF I was gonna have a similar experience and boy, how wrong I was 🤣. First fight I did was Barbariccia Ex. To this day, I definitely do not recommend anyone to start with that. Terrible fight to start because of the pace on how things keep being dropped on you lol. Then I went to Abyssos with a static that, despite knowing clearly I had no previous experience with savage content, they were on another level in terms of expectations. Two weeks in we've got P5S and P6S cleared and progging P7S but I was clearly the "weak link" DPS performance wise and I started getting called out for that. Shame and panic kicked in, I insta-left the static and gave up that tier entirely 🤣 Learning from that, I tried again on Anabaseios with a different group, one whose expectations were more chill. I still struggled (I have some issues when it comes to performing rotations fully on automatic mode and dealing with mechanics at the same time. I can spend hours on dummy, for weeks and months and still I can't get turn off my brain for the rotation part. It's always juggling between pressing right buttons at the right time and deal with mechanics). But at least I was comfortable enough to get to P12S. Eventually the group disbanded because we started losing people and it became harder and harder to replace them and I didn't get to see second fase, but at least I got some experience to make some better decisions for next tier. (Even if this decision is to give up on savage entirely lol 🤣) Thanks for the video, many of the tips and suggestions you gave are things I tried and indeed helped me get better to the point of at least getting to see part of the last fight of the tier!

Question when it comes to familiarity of rotation: I've heard a number of people say that you need to be able to do your rotation without having to look at your hot bars. How literal are we being here? My main jobs are dnc and rdm and it is literally impossible to do my rotations without looking at my hotbars because I need to keep track of what has proc'd. I have also played a fair bit of gnb, ast, and sch, and those ones I can't just never look at my hotbar ever and nail openings and burst windows without having to look at all. Is it kinda just accepted that certain jobs will have to spend more of their time occasionally glancing the hotbar?
@glimoreganajai2206
@glimoreganajai2206 Месяц назад
thats bs, just get comfy and go into fight, u will wipe 100 times and eventually u just autopilot it. I know people who literally clicks their skills (and clicking requires u to look at skillbar) and they cleared TOP high actually good rank. Just do the fight. I did my 1st savage without knowing there is some kind of rotation, wtf is opener to begin with etc. The fight i start to really care about it was p8s. Yet its nice to know general rotation and opener, but unless u doing minilevel no echo run, its all irrelevant, bosses designed with idea that somewhere u will do mistake, and now we outgear any fight in game and also have echo 15% dps for all of them. makes it literally doable with any dps.
@glimoreganajai2206
@glimoreganajai2206 Месяц назад
what its more like is that u can quick peek at skillbar to have a glimpse of upcoming cds and u back on focusing boss mechanics again. But thats imo more like ultimate content, not the savage/extreme which fights are extremely slow and have almost no random at all. Skill comes with experience, bullying dummy is just boring, bully some boss with echo instead (echo designed to cover your mistakes)

@jessw2268 Месяц назад
As someone whose mains are PLD and DNC and who's cleared the last four savage tiers on patch no echo, all criterions and 2 criterion savages, and am currently progging through an ultimate: not that literal. There are definitely some jobs that are a great deal more static in rotation like PLD, these I check my bars much less, but still a little bit, because while I have a rough internal sense for when oGCDs come off cooldown, I do need to look at the bars so I'm ready to hammer them the _moment_ they come off cooldown. But that's the thing, I have my rotation familiar enough that I HAVE that internal sense of "ok, feels like circle of scorn and expiation are about to come off cooldown right about now" so I know WHEN to look at my crossbars. For the bigger CDs, as you learn and memorize the fight, you also memorise the timing of mechanics in relation to when your CDs come off cooldown. For instance, I can tell you off the top of my head that in P12S phase 1, assuming I have executed my opener correctly, technical step will come off cooldown the exact GCD where I'm lining up for the very first orb in superchain 1, again post-paradeigma 3 almost exactly as the tanks are getting bustered, and then I hold the next one for post Superchain IIA. For all jobs but _especially_ very proc-based jobs like DNC, a good HUD/UI layout is imperative. Mechanics in high-end are communicated through three main ways: boss castbar, physical tells both placed on the arena and in terms of boss physical gestures, and debuffs. Sometimes it's the whole lot at once: for superchain 1, I need to look at the arena to see where the first orb spawns and at the shapes tethered to it to see whether it's going to be a point-blank aoe or a donut, and a pair stack or an individual spread, and position myself around the orb accordingly. While there, I need to look about to see whether the next orb is clockwise or counter-clockwise, and check my debuffs to see whether I'm stacking with the light element stack or dark element stack. and then after that we need to rotate for a third orb which I then have to check for in or out, resolve more debuffs, and then look at the _boss_ because she's about to tell us which side of the arena she's going to cleave by lighting up her wings, and _then_ check the boss castbar to see whether the party should stack inside the boss' hitbox or outside of it. And all of this is happening during/shortly after a techstep burst window. Whatever you use to see when you have procs, it needs to be somewhere where you can see all of these elements easily at the same time. Some people simply put their entire hot/crossbar nearer to the center of the screen so they can easily see the boss while looking at bars, and then position their debuffs and boss castbar right above/next to their hot/crossbars. Some people have a separate hotbar just for display purposes, on which they have only their procced buttons plus some cooldowns and put THAT center/top of screen so they can see easily when they have a proc without having to look _down_ to the bottom of their screen where their actual hot/crossbar is. A third way--and this is what I use--is to position your buffs closer to center/top of the screen. If you go into HUD layout-->status info-->click the little gear button for more settings-->under "layout" select "Split Element into 4 Groups, you can separate out "conditional enhancements" and "enfeeblements" (debuffs), make those extra big, and stick them somewhere super visible. "Conditional Enhancements" are the buffs that you get _specifically_ from rotation that allows you access to procs, like DNC's Silken Symmetry and Silken Flow, and splitting the elements out like that will cause them to be listed separately from all the other buffs you have like tech/standard step and shield samba and regens and what have you, allowing you to see when you have gained a proc more easily without looking down.

I initially was fearful of raiding in FF14 because I had a terrible experience raiding in Guild Wars 2. So I was fearful of fucking up and getting flamed or kicked for it. I also just have severe Anxiety so trying something new I had no experience with terrified me. Thankful the FF14 community was far more welcoming and I also got into it initially with my FC through Extreme Trials before I delved into Savage in Abyssos with a longtime friend of mine from Guild Wars 2 that I’d gotten into FF14. We raid together all the time (even to this day) which helped ease my Anxiety a bit since I’d be playing with someone I knew. My top 1# reason is the randoms. I've done some Savage raiding and like out of 10 of them I got 4 where there were total dicks people in the party, one of they literally bullied me to leaving cause I missed the last mec in P9S (obs: it was a prog pf). I'll also give my take on raiding as a new raider to other raiders! I started raiding in Endwalker, from P5S onwards. I started by joining a completely random no-expectations extreme (Barbaricca) in my FC. It was just a random event - there was no planned static or anything, just a random event to any of those who wanted to join. So I did! It made me very quickly learn that I knew pretty much nothing about raiding on black mage, and that's completely normal! You will fail. You will realize you're non-optimal, and you will realize that the base game doesn't properly inform you how to use your full toolkits outside of a couple pointers and expecting you to read tooltips. For me, I realized I simply wasn't ready for black mage and now I play a mixture of Ninja and Dancer. But! Soon after I cleared Barbaricca, I realized that the reward of clearing was super fun! Everybody was cheering in the discord call, and it made me want to try the second raid tier after a health break. Then it just didn't stop. I joined a proper casual static for the final Endwalker savage tier, and I'm going to clear TEA very soon in another casual static! As long as you study and are open to acknowledging your mistakes and fixing them as best you can, you will do fine. Sure, you might come across rude people in party finder - but in truth, actually toxic people are few and far between. And even further, once you actually get into raiding and make friends, you usually just raid with those people anyways - and braving party finder is always way more easygoing when you have other people with you. Be social! Join discords! Be in calls! Overcome anxiety!!! This game becomes substantially less scary when you step out of your comfort zone to adapt and overcome with friends! I haven't a single bad party finder experience. Those who have irked me or have been a little rude? Well, I take with a grain of salt because there are toxic people in EVERY game.

I have been looking into raiding at Savage level. The problem is remembering what to do when it actually comes to do it. Plus most statics require VC now which I really don’t want to do with strangers. I might give it another go as I am interested but I know I need the right group. Also, doing your rotation until you can do it with your eyes closed? I know that's impossible for me.

Depending on how much time you have, just make a raid alt and do both. My raid lead is a great deal more skilled and hardcore than most of the rest of us are, but they're with us anyway just cos they like us and cos they're a bit of a raid junkie. They clear the tier in less than a month with their other group, and then cheerfully teach the rest of us over the next 2-3 months. Myself, my work schedule doesn't have the consistency to allow me to commit to more than one static, but I have a raid alt so I can practice more regularly in PF just whenever I have time, and cleared the tier a month ahead of my static. Like my raid lead, I'm in the static just cos I like playing with them a lot.

Don't even get me started on how distracting and intimidating so many markers placed at once was throughout the whole thing, lol. Alas, Extreme/Savage/Ultimate/etc will remain content beyond what I'm personally capable of doing outside of unsyncing it once I've over leveled/geared it, which does also mean having to accept that there's stuff I'll never get to do because it'll never reach a point where I can outpace it, same with a lot of content in this game actually, which is why I never understood anyone who complains that the game is "too easy" when a lot of it is effectively walled off to so many because they'll never be good enough to beat it (myself included).

Since i view most dungeons and raids as puzzles... I REALLLY don't like watching or reading guides, i want to do things blind, and find out how they work on my own terms. for old content this is almost impossible without a group willing to do it with you, and even for current content, if you aren't part of that first group progging through them, it becomes much more difficult to do things blind as time goes on. I really enjoy doing the raids and the savages, but doing thing through PF is actually pretty difficult at the end of the day. so to do savages and ex you really need a static group... but good luck getting 48 causal peeps to run DR(savage) blind. that's probably not happening. and the groups that do it are very... uh... "unwelcoming" from what i've found.

Did TEA on RDM as well and it worked out fairly well... all within a year's time span (yeah, I get that I'm a bit slow, oh well). Then I went back to AST on Criterion and P12S. Now I'm trying my hand at TEA with AST. Going into DT, the goal is to prog the next savage on AST and off role on RDM/BLM. The next Ultimate is also the goal for RDM most likely. It's taken some time but raiding feels a lot less stressful now. I even ran P12S without markers with a group of peeps and it's been a ton of fun to relearn by being extra mindful of movement without relying on markers.

I have the time, patience, and mentality to raid, I just lack the group. Oh, and I also have issues with my short-term memory because of unmedicated ADHD, so any memory-based mechanic requires that I need callouts. So yeah, not sure if raid groups would put up with me for that reason.
