Curious question, you have 109,000 (109k) model views on CGTrader, what conversion rate do you have in terms of views vs quantity of total sales? I don't know what the conversion rate is in general for 3D models from views to sale! Would it be possible to share a rough percentage?
Great info! I wonder if you have ever encountered people copying your models and putting them on other sites as their own, and if so how do you handle it?
@@HubertKnoblauch3DContentOnline I do not believe i have been affected by it but i have very few models online, planning to add more though. I know that people have had problems with re-uploaded models in the 3D printing community, but i don't know if it is a small or big problem. I don't think it exists as much on the 3d content websites, it is more of a facebook group thing and other sharing / community websites.
I think if you look at the amount of "megascans" drone scanned content i do imagine it would, you would need to brace yourself for competing with Megascans offering free drone scans though.
Hubert Knoblauch - 3D Content Online just off the back of this question, is there more value in selling a model packaged with a range of options? For example fbx, obj, .blend, Maya ASCII, Maya binary, shaded, unshaded, rigged, and unrigged, low poly, high poly. It seems like those options wouldn’t be very hard to arrange as separate files in a zip folder to sell as a package so is it worth it?
I have no idea for how much I can price my models. Not sure how to evaluate the quality. I usually aim for a less values, like: 5 dollars or even 2 dollars. But it's very hard to sell.
it's tricky. but remember people pay for quality. some of my best sellers are 50 to 75 Dollar models. I personally don't buy anything under 10 USD, because I question the work and it hurts the industry
Nice video, very inspirationing :) But i have one question, i see someone sell the product (ex : arkelstorp desk). I know maybe the model isn`t creating by his inpiration, it`s like maybe created by seeing any refrence image. But if u sell the 3d model, is it not count as copyright? plagiarism? Love if you answer it, thank you :))
Good question. So glad it came up and it might be worth doing a video here. The short answer is this: There are 2 categories in which models can be published, royalty-free, or editorial. When something is closely referencing something else in the public domain, or even an exact 3d representation - it MUST be published as editorial content, this will preclude it from certain uses but most editorial content still sells well. Anything which is entirely your own design, should fall under royalty free. That being said - a close or exact replica of an object in public domain should still exclude logo's from that object. If it includes them, the legal issue is not nescassarily copyright, but rather something called "Passing off" - this is basically a legal phrase for saying that you may be passing something else's content, as your own. For these reasons i try and be rather safe than sorry - i do sell editorail content as well but i would be VERY carefull before i go and make editorial content into sensitive industries (example, military pharmacuetical etc.) As far as 2D goes, it is useful being guided by some of the stock image legislation, an exact building match should require a property release (photo - but in 3d should be editorial). Etc... For the above reasons i would recommend in summary: Only model what is in public domain If it is a "representation" and not a "creative" - it should be editorial If it is editorail, strip logo's anyway Don't include procuct or brand name in the searchable description Hope this makes sense?
@@HubertKnoblauch3DContentOnline thanks for the detail answer mr. hubert, you literally increasing my insight about cgtrader store. Not just from seller, but if as buyer i must be more carefull, because there is still can be a chance i buying copyrighted object. I was checking your store, and that so pretty awesome !! xD. Maybe you can check one store www.cgtrader.com/frezzy . Thats not mine, this guy`s 3d modelling so awesome and almost look like real same like yours :). He not removing the logo, and give the title like the object`s real name. Is that no copyright ? or i mean is it allowed to sell? Thank you!!
Public domain simply means, out in the world, available or visible online, on shelf or in store depending on the product/item. And no longer only visible to the relevant design agency. Hope this makes sense?
@@HubertKnoblauch3DContentOnline I think so….🤔 So if I wanted to make a model of the TARDIS or sell models of things off of Portal would I be able to do that if I put it under the correct license? Or would I need to get direct permission from the company?
With regards to low poly/highly stylized content i have not done much research as that genre never held my attention so from my side, its difficult to say. I will say this, there are some creators i follow who have done extremely well in this region. The dont offer individual models. But rather, large packs or sets.
@@HubertKnoblauch3DContentOnline Oh thanks. I'll research more. Just starting. I thought the platform prevented you from selling accidentally something you shouldn't. Sometimes you have no clue. cheers.
You will see that in the publisher area hou have an option to sell as editorial (blendermarket, cgtrader, turbosquid ). Just make sure that box is checked
Absolutely, i sell on CGTrader, Blender Market and Sketchfab. On Turbosquid you can opt in for a higher payout but then you are not allowed to sell on other sites (exclusivity)
@@HubertKnoblauch3DContentOnline hi Hubert, thanks for informative video. I agree with you about stores. BUT I think that sketchfab is only for presentation and marketing, because there are tools that can rip your work trough browser.
Hi, nice , informative video. My queries: 1. What you suggest architecture model bor game assets 3d models?? 2. You mentioned about ar vr!! How to make such model? And what format to upload ? 3. What are platform to sell 3d models on? Can you give out / suggest some trustable sites name for beginners?
Hi, architectural models are entirely saturated and the competition is fierce, game models are not really my thing, my attention span doesn't sit well with the long winded workflow, my models are all vfx orientated rather, On the second question, vr is fairly easy, just keep it all low poly, bake the lighting and view in whatever headset you have, we linked an HTC vive to our unity pc, I recommend CGTrader as a platform for general 3d and 3d prints, artstation if you are tarrgeting vfx/freelance concept artists, blendermarket if you are heavy handed in the .blend arena, I ulload to those and then low poly to sketchfab, Hipe this helps!
@@HubertKnoblauch3DContentOnline Hi, thanks for response. I am work as VFX artist. You said " my all models are all VFX oriented rather". Can you put more light on it.
Very good information, short and to the point! Lighting and set dressing to have room to be improved. Again great content! Looking forward to seeing more :D
Thank you, i appreciate the comment. I really am struggling with lighting and background but also dont want it to stop me helping other content creators.
Hey, Great content. Also, do you think building a website of own would help in this, as I am trying to build a website of my own to sell 3d models. I am using Dotcompal, which is an easy drag and drop website editor/maker, it has other marketing tools too. Your thoughts on this Hubert?? Subbed you BTW :)
@@HubertKnoblauch3DContentOnline Thanx for the comment, I will surely check out Dave Patel :) Also, My idea to make my own website is to cut down on commissions to vendor or third party platforms. So, creating my website with the simple tools available in the market. I have tried other tools too in the same niche, but this Dotcompal is new and affordable to someone like me who is a newbie.
Hello Hubert. I would really like to hear your opinion. I'm a very beginner at 3D model selling. My profession is cloth design. T-Shirts, Suits, Jackets, Pillows, Beds, etc. How do you think is this category works? Is that worth to focus and spend time on it? I also thinking about providing Marvelous Designer file format including .obj, .max, etc file formats. And another question is, which platform for bestselling this category? Please let me hear your thoughts. Thanks, Mehmet
Yes sorry, Your building are usful. I was wondering if you are selling on the Unity Asset Store. Thx very nice video! Here are my assets. And I did not sell any of them. I learn a lot in this tutorial! assetstore.unity.com/publishers/10393
I'm about to sell my vehicle and the accessories because of this video. have an idea how much is the cash out in cgtrader and other site?. you are right when making asset for selling is the stick with realistic approach since stylized is really specific as per art direction for different games compared to realistic it is wide enough to use. for texture size what is your recommended? are all gonna stick to the 2K upto 4K? or best is to make possible output for 2K and best is 4K? let me know your thought.
2 and 4 k, cash out in cgt is 70 percent, Turbosquid is 40 and blender market is 70 i think. The nice thing is in cgtrader the cash out increases over time.. i am now on 80 percent
@@HubertKnoblauch3DContentOnline you mean 2 texture set one is 2K and 4K or probably best is just release a 4K so the buyer can just down sample them to 2K. for the file type I've seen you have max and blend, it means you own too a 3ds max that is kind of another expense just to have an max file available for because I'm thinking of providing, (blend, fbx and obj) I don't want to buy another dcc tool just for specific file type. thank you, once I got free-time will compile my asset :) thank you for the fast response, I appreciate it! \m/
@@pawpotsRS cool. I do provide max just because my work owns a licence but most of my sales are Blender format. If you use blender upload to the blender market, a lot of shoppers there. I think you are right in a 4 k set, depending on the application.
@@HubertKnoblauch3DContentOnline Gonna export it to blend file, btw when you providing Blend file did you include lighting also or just the raw mesh there because as for me I don't know how to setup material there.
You said in a comment that you can't sell the same model on Turbosquid and other website as well. Please can you tell me more about this. As I have uploaded a Taj Mahal model to Turbosquid and CGTrader as well. The exact same model. Do I need to do something here?
Hey, no what i meant is only if you opt in to Turbosquid's loyalty program. I used to sell on turbosquid and CGT. You can, just don't sign the loyalty in Turbosquid
@@HubertKnoblauch3DContentOnline Thank you so much for the clarification. I was about to delete the model from Turbosquid just in case I landed in any unwanted legal trouble. Cheers.
What about materials? In Blender you can use procedural texture, unwrapped, mixed shader to make materials, but it means it'll only work in Blender and exchange formats can't reproduce a complex material. Do I focus on the Principled BSDF and external textures (is it what "PBR ready" means?) or complex material that only works in Blender sell too?
If you want to resell in other firmats use external textures. Also, using principaled BSDf does not make it PBR ( although the principaled shader is a Physically based render shader) mail me at hknoblauch@gmail.com with the subjectline PBR and i will send you some PBR documentation
