Thanks for taking the time to share! Very interesting. Totally appreciate what you said about needing to put in the work. My question: Do you have a recomendation for i) networking websites where there is a community of people discussiong jobs/ jobs fairs/meet ups? ii) are you aware of meet up type organizations where professional networking events are listed? i.e., www.meetup.com/ is pretty active in the west (I realize there will be some industry niche component to this.) When I moved to NYC and London the meet up component was very key for getting plugged into the network of people who knew were the action is happening.

Hi John. Unfortunately I do not have a list of networking communities for Shenzhen. I used to go to many networking events in Shanghai when I worked there previously, but I have not found Shenzhen to have the same ecosystem, in this regard. To some degree there are LinkedIn groups focused on Shenzhen, but lately I have not found them as reliable as it has turned more into a place where moderators and group owners pitch their own businesses and posts.

Great content. I especially enjoyed the resume black hole line. It is classic. Are you interested in doing collab videos with other china RU-vid folks?

Thanks for commenting. The resume black hole is definitely a killer, no matter what country you're in. But it can be even worse for foreigners looking to work in China, as HR teams are usually looking for specific boxes to check off, and they generally do not craft job description to match non-Chinese candidates.

I have been there before, I wanted to find a job there, but I couldn't speak Chinese 😊

Chinese language skills can certainly be a barrier, but I feel there are always opportunities if you have the right functional skills. For example, Shenzhen is very good for people with the tech industry, while other cities have different talent needs. Shanghai has more of a focus on marketing and luxury goods, I believe.
