In the months following Pearl Harbor, the Imperial Japanese Navy conducted operations at sea, threatening British Royal Navy dominance in the area.
The most dangerous moment of the war, and the one which caused me the greatest alarm, was when the Japanese fleet was heading for Ceylon and the naval base there. The capture of Ceylon, the consequent control of the Indian Ocean, and the possibility at the same time of a German conquest of Egypt would have closed the ring and the future would have been black.
- Prime Minister Winston Churchill, April 1942
March 31, 1942, Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, her forces had overrun Hong Kong, Malaya, Singapore, the Dutch East Indies, and Burma. Now the Imperial Japanese Navy and Army were heating up for an assault on India, the jewel in the British imperial crown.

1) A light cruiser and a heavy cruiser and you gripe about losing five planes? Dude, that's a fine tradeoff in my book! 2) The Aikoku Maru class was probably the largest of the IJN's merchant cruisers. They were originally passenger-cargo liners built for the Japan-South America run, and were large, beautifully-proportioned ships. Aikoku Maru and Hokoku Maru (sisters) were the terrors of the Indian Ocean during the long raiding cruise they conducted...until they encountered the Dutch tanker Ondina, which decided to fight back. As Hokoku Maru pressed the attack, Ondina scored a lucky hit on Hokoku Maru's torpedo mount in the stern, blowing the ship apart. Aikoku Maru fired a few shots in fury at the destruction of her younger sister, picked up Hokoku Maru's survivors, and then beat a retreat. She survived until February 1944, when a TBF Avenger put a 1,000-lb. bomb directly into her forward cargo hold during the raid on Truk. The forward cargo hold was filled with ammunition, and the entire forward half of the ship was literally vaporized. The last ship of the class, Gokoku Maru, never got to serve as a merchant cruiser, completed much later in the war. She was torpedoed and sunk while serving as a transport in late 1944.

Just FYI, Wolf: That sub that you 'assisted with accelerated diving maneuvers' was, apparently, primarily a minelaying sub - Not sure if that has any in-game repercussions, but if you end up inexplicably losing ships along the west coast of India outside of an engagement or something... I guess now you'll know why 💩🙃

It is pretty frustrating when you give your ships a target and they ignore the order ater firing two salvos. Recommend disabling fire at will when you want your ships to attack a specific target. Just don't forget to give them a new target when they've sunk their previous one.
@sirboomsalot4902
@sirboomsalot4902 Месяц назад
One thing I noticed is that, if you tell a ship to fire at a specific target but don’t turn off “fire at will”, they will just go back to their original target the moment you aren’t looking. Thats why they kept engaging that freighter and not the Sendai.

2nd episode in and we've already got our first Allied casualty, at least HMS scout gave the Japanese hell before going down. Gotta give props to the captain of that Armed Merchant Cruiser, she certainly put up a hell of a fight. All in all, a good engagement, a formation with that many large merchant vessels would have almost certainly been an invasion force destined for Ceylon

The Fulmar was basically an enlarged Hurricane... and the Navigators in the Med used to go up with Thompson submachine guns in an attempt at boosting morale... but it does have 8 Brownings on the pointy end... for what the RN needed it was a little on the outdated side as the RN high command thought that navigating and flying the aircraft was too much for one man...
@nerd1000ify
@nerd1000ify Месяц назад
Fulmar was never really meant to be competitive with land based fighters, when they were designing it the assumption was that enemy fighters wouldn't have the range to reach the carrier so the Fulmars would only have to deal with bombers. That assumption might even have been true in the Atlantic, but in the Med distances were much shorter and in the Pacific the Zero's outrageously long range ruined that plan. To their credit, the fleet air arm did recognise the fulmar's inadequacies and did their best to acquire better fighters. Unfortunately the best they could do domestically was navalise the Spitfire, and it's hard to imagine a worse design for operating from a carrier deck... The US-sourced Wildcat, Hellcat and Corsair were what really fulfilled their needs, once they got them.

Hi Wolfpack, love the War on the Sea videos! Just a heads up, in my experience ships will just ignore your attack orders a few seconds later if they have fire at will turned on. You can see this pretty clearly during the 24:46 engagement where everyone starts shooting the nearest merchant ship for no reason. Messes up solutions and is very annoying to keep track of during a long battle :)

Typically, when a friendly air group is intercepted by fighters, the AI CV group is within 25nm of the intercept. The only time it's farther out is if you're intercepted multiple times and escape and end up being chased. Also, the presence of that Jake means a Myoko, Takao, Mogami, or Tone class somewhere. (EDIT: on 2nd thought, the Jake may have come from the Sendai)

I feel like the AA guns need to be buffed on both sides. Kind of crazy how a single, slow, low flying seaplane can get through an entire task force of AA guns firing solely at it. I think it also just plays into the “meta” of using aircraft to sink entire task forces.

AA gun crews often struggled to hit the mark against the Swordfish because it was so slow. They would train to defend against something like an Avenger or Val and consequently would give too much lead out of habit. That's how the Swordfish managed to cripple the Italian fleet in port and critically damage KMS Bismarck with minimal losses. Also, the Swordfish was surprisingly durable, mostly because of the fact it was made mostly of canvas. Bullets and shells would mostly just pass clean through it without hitting anything important
@monkey0427

Good vid.. Some things that might be handy... Merchant ships - Know their capacity. I start an experimental campaign, and buy 1 of each merchant/oiler, and write on a notepad how many of that type of ship, their speed, their guns (NOT machine guns). capacity of troops, cargo, engineers, fuel. Then I restart the actual campaign. That way you can put together a better matched convoy...as you found out when you bought those 2 ships and they weren`t what you thought. Remember also a convoy will only travel at speed of slowest ship. No use buying 16 knot ships and one 10 knot ship. When engaging that Sendai, you should have turned your 2x 2 warships south, and crossed the Sendai `T` and fired broadsides. Another handy hint....I`ve found when my ships are firing, most of their shells fall short of target. So if there is a 2nd enemy ship on other side of my intended target, I fire at the far target and usually end up hitting both. I`ve noticed other comments about your ships not firing at your intended target...before I hit start, I select all ships and turn on radar or sonar, set speed etc and also I turn off `fire at will` then I start the engagement. Same also if you are trying to engage ships and there are enemy planes buzzing around that are no real threat to you, turn off `auto fire flak`.

The Fulmar was a two seater thanks to the Admiralty's insistence at the time it was designed that every naval aircraft have a navigator to keep the pilot from getting lost. Aircrews voiced a desire for a rear gun of some sort but these requests were ignored. So they made do with Thompson SMGs, handguns, and flare pistols, with some going as far as throwing bundles of toilet paper into the slipstream in an effort to confuse enemy pilots.

The Albacore was retired because the Fairey factory switched to Barracuda production, while the swordfish was already being licence produced elswere and was considered "good enough" for ASW work. Regarding your light cruisers in Force A and B, be careful because some of them are not really suited for surface engagements: HNLMS Jacob van Heemkerck was outfitted with a AA 4-inch battery only, when receiving British guns after evacuating the Netherlands, in contrast to her sister Tromp 150 mm battery. Also keep an eye out on those C-class RN cruisers. Many have been refitted to AA 4-inch cruisers in the '30s to support the lacking AA capabilities on the lighter RN cruisers and Tribal class destroyers. HMS Caledon should be fine, cause her 6 inchers weren't replaced till end of '42.

When you finally have big ships coming close to each other, and then have the whole enemy fleet being taken out by like 10 torpedo hits to each ship. Also a tight formation with AA should be hard to survive for these planes, and especially swordfish planes that are so slow and fragile.
