We are back with another episode of the Beyond the Sanctum! With new cinematics on the horizon, we’ve decided dig up the old BTS backdrop and put it to use!
Today, join Jesse and Jack (one of the cohosts of Decoded, a Lost Codex Podcast) as they watch and discuss the latest Warbringers episode: Jaina!
Lyrics:
Beware, beware the Daughter of the Sea."
"Beware," I heard him cry.
His words carried upon the ocean breeze,
As he sank beneath the tide.
Those blood-soaked shores of Kalimdor,
Where sailors fought and died.
The Admiral fell at Theramore,
because she left his side.
Why this? Why this oh Daughter of the Sea?
Why this? Did you forget your seaside days?
Always the pride of our nation's eyes,
How could she go astray?
When she did flee across the ocean deep,
the Admiral followed west.
What else but sail to save a daughter's life,
and pray she still drew breath?
But there he found upon those distant shores,
Enemies 'pon the rise!
But when he faced those savage foes
His daughter stood aside.
And buried deep beneath the waves,
Betrayed by family.
To his nation, with his last breath, cried, "Beware the Daughter of the Sea."
"I heard, I heard, across a moonlit sea,
The old voice warning me,
"Beware, beware the Daughter of the Sea",
"Beware, beware..."
...of me."

As a staunch horde player, I loved this. And I think it's utterly stupid to expect Jaina to "get over it" at all. Why would she? Her anger and rage and pain feels justified and right to me.

Honestly, allthough the lore of Warcraft is full of candidates for that questionable honor, i'd say that Jaina is probably the one person to go through the most shit in her life.

@@shadowcat1606the only part of the warcraft universe i have touched is hearthstone, where i know only a few names like jaina here, but i found this piece absolutely fantastic. Tells a story through the song, nothing too complex on the surface (although i imagine for people invested in the lore it does delve into it nicely). The story of this is easy to take in and i even got chills when she raises the ship and the ending with her on the ship 'beware of me'.

I was one of those Horde players that didn't understand how Jaina changed so drastically. It's not that I thought she had to get over it, I just thought after we do the whole Siege of Orgrimmar thing it was clear that the Horde also disagreed with Garrosh, and yet she still blamed everyone else to the point of not letting the Horde inside of Dalaran when it was clear that without them the world would fall. I say that I was, because the video, the song, showed me what I couldn't see. How even after she sacrificed everything for peace (she gave up both her family and her people's opinion of her), the very Horde she was defending destroyed everything she had left. She's not just mad because her home was bombed. She's mad because EVERYTHING she ever stood for turned out to be for naught. What stood out from the video the most was how she was the one who started singing the song. How it showed regret and sorrow, because all that hatred she earned from her people meant nothing in return.

(This is Jack) -- That's a great analysis. I wholly agree!
@Ower8x

There is also a tremendous aspect of guilt for her ... in her mind her decision to let the horde kill her father only achieved that they were powerful enough to attack Theramore in the fashion they did. Rhonin had a family, Theramore was her kingdom she should have been the one to die in his place another source of guilt. In the novel Tides of war there is her apprentice Kinndy, and she made a promise to the young woman's/girls parents that she would be safe as long as Jaina was alive .. she failed add to that the scene where the girls corps crumbles to violet dust... that adds some big guilt. Add to that the guilt already present for abandoning Arthas and all he did etc ... With Sylvanas abandon/betraying the Alliance at the Broken shore, resulting in Varians death that is another source of guilt as she was the one who prevented Varian from attacking the Horde in the Undercity during WotL, meaning in her mind her decision allowed to stay Sylvanas in power and be in a position to do this ... And it seems the wounded and broken Jaina can only deal with it by turning it into anger and pointing it at those that at least a little she can rightly be angry at. But she did deal with it somewhat during the War Crimes novel ... at least on an individual level, she does not trust the Horde as an organization anymore ... that is why she wanted Varian to dismantle it at the end of MoP.... Its is also why we dont hear about Jaina unlike say Gen lashing out at the horde during Legion ... where ever she was from the comic Reunin i seems she was on her own whacking demons, but she left the Horde alone...

It wasnt that drastic at all. After the horrific massacre at Stratholme, death of her father, the atrocities of Arthas as the Lich King, the destruction of Theramore, the Sunreaver betrayal over the theft of the Divine bell from Darnassus, Garrosh's assault on Anduin at Mogu'shan vaults, and the death of King Varian. It's no wonder that she got fed up with "Hating having to resort to violence."

Something interesting that I saw pointed out elsewhere was that Jaina's reflection in the water was impaled by the ship's mast just as Daelin was previously shown being impaled by a spear. Whether this was intentional or not, I'm not sure, but I'd like to believe it was.
@TheLostCodex
@TheLostCodex 6 лет назад
Definitely some duality there. Both with them being impaled, the symbolism that it’s Daelins ship she’s raising while impaled by the guilt of the whole ordeal. Good eye!

Jaina Proudmoore: Thrall, Rexxar... I come in peace. You must believe me--I had no part in my father's plans. I wish none of this had ever happened. I... I don't know what to do. Thrall: We've bled together on many battlefields, Jaina. We've faced untold perils as allies. But your father threatens the security of our nation and the very future of my people. You know how this has to end. Jaina Proudmoore: I know, Thrall. Do what you must. There is a goblin shipyard on a nearby island that could provide you with warships of your own. With those, you could scatter the blockade surrounding Theramore. But please, spare my men if you can. My father will try to use them against you, but they're the only real family I'll have left when this is over. Please do this... for me. Thrall: We'll do what we can, Jaina. You have my word. Now you'd better make yourself scarce. The battle's about to begin. Wacraft III Frozen Throne, rexxar story You have to play Wacraft III Frozen Throne to understand whats hapend

They better let Rexxar have a plotline better than what we've seen so far in Stormsong Valley! He has a few cool lines regarding Jaina, but he needs to take a little of the spotlight for anything to make sense. Actually, having him rejoin Chen, Thrall, Rokahn and Vol'jin would be mindblowing

Hey guys, just discovered you through this video, i'll make sure to follow what you do since i'm a huge warcraft lore fan. What I really loved about this warbringer video and what we've seen so far with jaina through the beta is the change in her attitude. When Theramore was bombed, all she wanted to do was kill the horde at all cost without really thinking it through, and we saw that too with a couple dialogues between her and Varian during Pandaria, saying that she can't just rush in and do what she wants. But now it seems to me that she's being more strategic about it, like a real leader should be. She joined back the alliance, decided to go back to kul'tiras and make peace with the ghosts of her past without losing her determination about eliminating the horde. I'm glad they didn't change this aspect of her.
@OverlordFlinx
@OverlordFlinx 6 лет назад
I'm a huge Horde player, and I'm not mad at Jaina for her anger. Garrosh and his Horde took everything from her. But I would argue that it was just that; Garrosh's Horde. The Horde itself at the time was in turmoil, in a fever of not knowing how to react to the shift and power, seeing one of their leaders murdered in a shameful 1-on-1 duel that their Warchief was complacent in, and the young speaking over the more seasoned members. Garrosh's Horde was put to an end in Pandaria, and the healing process should have started. But Jaina continued to blame the rest of the Horde for what happened--even as Garrosh was put in chains due to a combined effort of both the Horde and the Alliance, her first thought was to decimate the Horde there and then. Even when Vol'jin--a good friend and the spear against the one who did this to her--became Warchief, she offered not even a chance to start healing. This is not even taking into account the genocide she tried to carry out in Dalaran. The point I stand by is that Jaina is rightfully angry at what happened; even vengeful. But her hate is misplaced against people that did everything they could to put down the man who carried it out. Against people that when the dust settled, chose to pursue some sense of peace in the time. It's not about "just get over it" with me. It's about letting the wounds heal at some point after the ones who did it being turned against and taken down by the very same people she now holds nothing but hate for.

The Shanty is by the Kul Tirans in anger and sorrow of the betrayal which has split thier nation. The fact they depict her singing it while the ghosts of the past and her own shame and guilt towering like clouds, make me actually feel some compassion for the character (not had much compassion over the last few years as she did a flat 180 in attitude for very badly shown reasons), but this puts into perspective why she is so erratic and unstable: the complete crushing guilt of not only what I mentioned above, but it time and time and time again has been proven a futile effort to strive for peace. The fact she has not gone Yogg'Saron level insane is a damn miracle. And I say this as a Horde player.
@death299
@death299 6 лет назад
Jonathan Borg "futile", you can't say that you strive for peace while letting your city take territory from the other side Both sides are guilty of it..but theramore was hers alone, why did she not stop them? Why did she abandon khadgar and anduin without thought? Why punish EVERYONE for the actions of some? She has no claim to being the hero anymore, or to being one who strives for peace, she abandoned that goal well before theramore fell

way to completely misunderstand lore he wanted vengance against the horde and justice the horde rampaged across the lands, killing thousands and destroying numerous strongholds and his son then thrall decides that it's fine because reasons? this AFTER he decides to start breaking the orcs out of prison and declaring a new horde and do you know HOW they got a navy? they took it so break out of prison fight the alliance to free others steal ships from the navy declare yourself the horde (with all the same titles) and then that horde is setting up camps...including training warriors and slowly taking over a major chunk of an entire continent i'm sure if we arrested all members of isis and then they did the same we wouldn't EVER think they're full of shit on the peace thing right? the horde claimed to seek, but their first actions were by all measures acts of war either way he wasn't dealing with a full scale invasion on another front that would see his army split in two lest it be overrun

When Jaina , Thrall , Rexxar and other members of the Horde met Admiral Proudmoore for the first time he say to Jaina : " You have always been naïve , my daughter . You aren't old enough to remember what these monsters did to our homeland . They must be exterminated like the mongrels they are ! " After that Horde's killed her father and Jaina say to him : " Father ... why wouldn't you listen ? ". But in the Warbringer Video she feel like she didn't listen to him , and that is why after she bring back her father's ship from the bottom of the sea Jaina say : " I'm listening now father ...." . She finally understand him and she feel that way because of The Horde attack with Mana Bomb on Theramore and like we all can see she is not the naïve girl she once was . I think that's the whole point of Warbringer Video .

Rewatching a bunch of videos in preparation for Shadowlands coming up, I just fully realized something a lot of people don't discuss. Jaina begins the song before a chorus takes over only for it to return to her. This is similar to how Jaina took control of her own direction in her life before other people took over her narrative. They took control of her story and tried redefining her actions. It's only now that she is trying to lead her life rather than let others tell her own story.
@FreeThePenguins

The difference between the forsaken doing it and Jaina doing it, is that the last stanza implies that she got some kind of message from her father, imploring her to take up the persona of "the Daughter of the Sea", or, since she is the rightful heir to the Proudmoore legacy, one can assume that it's her boat. But, if it's not, and it still belongs to her father, her father and his crew of ghostly visages showing her the way implies it's a gift to her to use to restore what was lost. And, if she's to believed "I'm listening now", this isn't the first time her father contacted her and implored her to return to the sea, where she belongs. I just really hope they don't turn her Naga to have the daughter of the sea thing be super literal lol

His last words to her were "Maybe in time, you will understand." And honestly. What is happening now is proving Daelin right. The reason Daelin was like he was, was that the horde killed his son, Tandred.. Jainas brother.... And Daelin watched Stormwind burn to ground the first time.. he's a veteran of the wars... believe me. Daelin has his reason to hate.. and now the horde is only proving him right. No matter how you look at it. Would you trust someone who did that to you? Fast forward all the events up until now. Legitemately. There is nothing you can compare or say to prove to me that her actions now aren't justified. Without being viewed as out of your bloody mind people.

I saw a lot of people saying that the ferryman in Theramore was "the grim reaper", and then they didn't get when she turned her head towards him saying "Father". I think that he's just a metaphor for the fact that your parents are your guide through life in a way, just like a ferryman is your guide through the river / sea.
@TheLostCodex
@TheLostCodex 6 лет назад
Definitely agree. I assumed it was Daelin the second we saw his 'face' because of the moustache. They given Daelin a concrete, lore look in the comic and the Ferryman's facial hair matched his identically. But it wasn't so much that her Dad was there, in person, guilting her through the song but rather a mental 'shoulder figure' throughout whole time.

@domdom3938 6 лет назад
The Lost Codex and then the fact that she gave the ferryman the necklace of her dad as a payment but then later he wore it around his neck instead of being a payment that you would normally place in your pocket, which really reinforces that it’s like a partial metaphor for her dad

And I mean, it makes sense, especially with where Jaina is coming from. Having regret over letting all those would-be Garroshes live over standing by her father. The art and song in the video were also simply amazing. I'm 99% sure the female vocalist is Laura Bailey, but I would love to know who is doing the male vocals. I've had it stuck in my head all day; they're so hauntingly beautiful!

Even though were never saw a designated flagship in WC3 the massive ship she rose is supposed to be her father's flagship. No idea where exactly it supposedly sank. This song was beautiful and Laura Bailey -Jaina sang it herself.

The theme of these Warbringers cinematics is more about the promise of vengeance for what has been done to them. That's why they're WARbringers. Jaina's hope has been betrayed so many times, by the Horde, that now she has no more mercy left in her. I got chills when she said "Beware.... of ME" Sylvanas feels that her former naive faith in the strength of her people betrayed her when she faced Arthas and was turned into what she is now. She claimed her vengeance on him finally but for her, she sees life as having betrayed her and she seeks vengeance upon the living who blithely enjoy their animus while she suffers in torment. Azshara was obviously betrayed by the Legion, and also her people, and at the very end grasps at any chance to stay alive so that she, the Radiant Queen, can exact her vengeance upon those who consigned her to this transformed fate.

it is an interesting other side to the story compared to warcraft 3 where the admiral was the deluded hate filled monster, trying to kill all orcs, which forced jaina to step aside. i like this angle from the loving father just going overboard trying to save his daughter. jaina is doing some growing. i hope they let her become a leader that is capable of the hard decisions her father did make but stay fair. so much potential there (unlike sylvanas … that one has gone down the dark rabbit hole a while back, at this Point i am fairly certain she has to die, hopefully in a blaze of glory, redeeming at least part of what she has done already). anyway, blizzard has multi layered story telling down.

There is a Greek term and name for an old sea goddess called Thallasa. In this context, a culture based on the sea like Kul'Tiras could be referred to both as Kul'Tiran or Tirasian. You could maybe make the same argument for the Quel'Thalas which I have enterpreted as meaning" High Seahome" as their Sunwell is on an island, their elven dialect being called Thallasian. It's just a thing I noticed.

This cinematic embody all emotions of what i think blizzard want to transmitt to us, Betrayal, Sadness, Regret and Revenge. Jaina didnt join her father in the fight because at the time thrall was trying to make peace happen but Admiral Proudmore didnt think they could be trusted so he attacked. And jaina wasnt having that. The horde just defended themselfs. Neither Jaina nor the horde was bad in that instance of the story.

Jaina, becomes the Admiral of the Kul'Tiras armada, after she raised the Proudmoore ship and her mother steps down for her. Jaina realized she took the wrong side in the third war, and should've stood by her father instead of trying to make peace. Her father was the Admiral of the sea hence the daughter of the sea.

One could argue that her father betrayed her as well. Even more, we can go so far as to state that the only betrayal was enacted by none other than Lord Admiral Daelin Proudmoore. Jaina begged him to stay his sword, not to crush what she was trying to build, and he just told her off, time and time again. When Rexxar came a-knocking, she asked him one more time to stop and leave back to his island, to set sail across the ocean once more, and his answer was again something the likes of "Nonsense, little one, your father knows better. Lemme purge this demons from Kalimdor, so that then you leave this little tantrum of yours behind and come back to Kul'tiras. Oh, but I'm gonna need all of your soldiers to attack at this monsters at the same time, so there's not risk for me." She did not take action against him, she just stood aside and let his father do his will; face the demons that defiled these lands. And since he would not listen to her, she would not listen to him either, as this foreign Admiral ordered her to sacrifice her people against her allies. And the Champion of the Horde, Last Son of the Mok'nathal claimed his life in an honourful way, contrary to how Admiral Prodmoore had claimed the lives of countless Darkspear Trolls (before his fleet was sent away by Rexxar himself, Chen, Rokhan and indirectly Vol'jin) in the Echo Isles, and countless Stonemaul Ogres in Dustwallow Marsh as well as Orcs in Durotar, once he got ashore. Daelin wanted his troops to cleanse the lands around Theramore, and his daughter's troops to protect him, but he was instead faced directly against those "demons," who were only trying to protect their lands and their loved ones, and by his own actions he met his end. He poked an enemy he could not defeat, and now Jaina is blamed in her home nation, because of her father, Lord Admiral Daelin Prodmoore, surely a hero in Kul'tiras, who simply would not listen to his own daughter. She had to stand and see how his father was killed. She had to endure the curse his actions cast upon her. All because of an man's whim, a man who though he was greater than life, and ended up the only way these people can end in a war: foolishly and needlessly. I'm saddened to see her thinking her father was right. She has every right to turn his back against the Horde now; after Garrosh and the mana-bomb. But similar to the ruins of her beloved Theramore, her heart is a crater, and they have filled it. Beware the daughter of the sea... for she is one of the most powerful beings in the face of Azeroth; and what's even more fearsome, for she is a wounded beast.
@gamestory2834
@gamestory2834 6 лет назад
He's the Lord Admiral, he definitely didn't betray her, so I can't accept that interpretation. Standing aside and let your father be killed, knowingly, is a pretty shitty thing. As long as she could believe in "for the greater good" it probably all worked out fine because she had greater concerns and could justify indirect patricide as a sacrifice for the greater good. There were certainly many more options Jaina could've explored, but she saw the greater good and knowingly sacrificed her father. Daelin's perspective on the orcs was understandable and the way for him to protect his loved ones and their land, was definitely to wipe out the orcs. A young, blue-eyed Jaina wouldn't convince him that letting them live was a good option. However, WC3 is about the overarching story, about cooperation across species against a greater threat (and you get the overview perspective, which is wrong to judge from), but once that is over, one is back to factional warfare, and the question is then asked you "was your sacrifice for the greater good worth it?". The crime is still there, even if you say it was necessary and it makes actions have weight to them as well (which is why I appreciate the Warbringer cinematic). That's why you have superheroes like Batman or Spiderman, facing the same things, but not accepting the sacrifices and instead being faced with their failures in terms of saving people or facing the toll on themselves and the trauma they have.

He is the Lord Admiral *of Kul'tiras* giving orders as Lord *in Theramore,* a completely different nation. And before being the Lord Admiral, he is her father. He stood aside from her first, when he decided Jaina was a little girl throwing a tantrum instead of a woman having chosen a path. There were no other options, since Daelin wouldn't have backed down. Let's say she stayed Rexxar's hand; Daelin would've taken that chance to strike. She did everyting in her power to stop that from happening, save for killing a whole side of the conflict. She didn't tied her father or anything like that, for him to be murdered, she just let him had the fight he wanted, after trying time after time to convince him otherwise. In the end, Daelin won the battle of wills, and she let him have his fight. Her only other option was to stand between her father and the Horde as an actual enemy for at least one of the sides, if not for both. There's no actual crime in Jaina's hands, since she only refused to take part in military actions from another nation. Rexxar and Daelin had a fair fight, and Daelin lost. It was not a 50 against one pitch, with her eating popcorn from behind. She stood aside, yes, but aside from Daelin's path, as he charged, as he wanted to, against the Horde. The only thing she did, was to refuse to take part. That could be considered a crime for it's a citizen of Kul Tiras disobeying a direct order from her Ruler, sure; but taking into account we are talking about a Ruler on her own, within her own city/nation, the only thing she did was to refuse an alliance with Lord Proudmoore, while not standing in his way, either. She feels it as a crime, because she could've prevented her father from dying and didn't, but she didn't put him on harm's way either; what's more, she tried to get him out of harm several times. She feels guilty, that's it. There's no actual crime, objectively speaking, even more so, no treason; but just two rulers of two different countries disagreeing. Regarding politics, regarding law, forgetting for a second they were family, the only crimes were commited by Lord Admiral Daelin Proudmoore. And I'm pretty sure, had he not been Jaina's father, things would've gone terribly wrong for this invader, because he commited acts of war against the Horde but against Theramore, as well. He was just undermining his daughter, we know that, but he was also insulting the ruler of Theramore while occupying her city, strotting as it was his own backyard. Don't believe me? Imagine the Amani Trolls making the exact same moves; how would Theramore, or any other nation for that matter, have answered to these aggressions? Not enough? Ok, imagine, then, the Amani Trolls were not doing this in Theramore, but in Uldum, because they wanted to march on AQ. Would the Ramkahen have bowed down their heads as Jaina did? Would them have commited their army to Zul'Aman, as Daelin pretended Jaina did? Or would they have stayed their ground against the aggressor? And once again, it was Daelin who failed to recognize her as a woman and as a ruler. As you said, he saw "a young, blue-eyed Jaina" instead of the Ruler of Theramore. He chose to belive his daughter was "A young, blue-eyed" girl and undermined her, while she begged him to listen for one second, and to respect her choice. It's like a misogynist father in denial of his gay son. It's not the son's fault the father chooses to be unable to deal with it, same way as it was not Jaina's fault Daelin chose to undermine every attempt she made at settling things down with no more bloodshed. Daelin declared War against the Horde, committed acts of War against Theramore, and lost the War he started. Theramore didn't even act on being occupied by a foreign force. Everything that happened can be tracked to Daelin's choices; if you go to war, there's a pretty good chance you're going to die. You cannot blame it on Jaina because, as a Ruler, she stood true to what she said from the very begining: She didn't want that fight, she tried to prevent the fight, and she did not take part on the fight. And she did all of that as the Ruler of the sovereign nation of Theramore. And if even now you cannot see the point I'm making, let's imagine a relative of yours, without your permission gets into your house, sits in your couch, his feet on your table, while drinking your beer he took from your fridge, and commands you to fight your neighbour because s/he hates your neighbour's father. Would you fight your neighbour or would you kick your relative the fuck out of your house? I'm guessing the latter, right? But for Jaina that would've meant taking arms against Kul Tiras and against her father. She could not get herself to force her will on him as Daelin tried to force his upon her; she tried to make him see her reasoning and to respect her decissions. He chose not to listen.

The thing is, Daelin only saw it one way: Old Horde. He saw the same Orcish Horde who killed his son. He saw the same Orcish Horde who put Stormwind civilians to the axe. He saw the same Orcish who Horde who invaded his planet only this time? They had picked up savage, monstrous allied on the way. So Jaina doing what she did, helped establish peace in that very moment by stepping aside. What's exciting for me is how its all coming together now. Its never once been a part of her arc in WoW- her betrayal of Daelin- and now its coming full circle beautifully. She's accepting it.

If you're asking how a mage raises a ship, it's the arcane magic. That's why Jaina's eyes got blue. And yes death magic and arcane magic have that in common, they can raise objects and people, however it's forbidden for mages to use magic to raise people. And yes, death magic is part of the four magic schools of learning and as i said it's forbidden for practice. Mages know much more things about death and undeath than any other and as we know Jaina is one of the six most powerful mages in existence.

Both Jack and I love the arcane lore and I've seen a TON of reaction videos asking "How can she do this!" but really, as you explained, its not outside her power. Given the fact she is near the top of her class-list...there's nothing to say she can't.
