Ah 40k a battle field with soldiers sporting highly advance power armor, plasma gun, teleporters, deamon blessed weapons, and some random guardsman with a 1870's revolver.

If your aim is worth anything, though. An ork would need a lot more than 6.

In WW2 you had people launching V2 rockets and dropping Atomic bombs. You also had people fighting at times with bayonets, hammers, and rocks. There was a German attack in Stalingrad that was held off by factory workers using makeshift melee weapons. In wars that desperate, you use absolutely everything that you feasibly can.
@KalashVodka175

@@GrimDarkNarrator Depends on the revolver, depends on the ork, depends on your aim. Some panicking civilian who randomly encounter an ork in some dark corridor will have a hard time shooting it down, but some expert gunslinger mercenary who can hit a bullseye with his trusty gun from 300 meters away? Assuming he don't panick, he might very well be able to aim for the eyes, or at least for the skull. A single bullet in the brain stem should do the trick even against orkoids And then you got high caliber stub revolver, if you unleash an entire cylinder in the center mass of your average ork boyz, it might at least drop him.

Ah 40k , the only universe where .50 BMG out of a "Heavy Stubber" is considered "low AP value"in comparison to other man portable weapons.

When Astartes can fire fist-sized (bullets) with the rate of a minigun, those are probably low AP :D

LOL, I agree w/u bout GW getting the AP wrong, 50. BMG will punch through tank treads as well as light armored vehicles/APC's. I try to remember that its just a work of fiction & that I gotta "suspend my disbelief"

@@goctexas1444 In mostly all editions, lasguns and autoguns have exactly the same stats. They're both automatic-fire longarms with roughly the same stopping power. The ease of maintenance often doesn't matter during a tabletop battle. Old Necromunda had a rule for it though. The chance for an autogun/stub pistol to keep functioning when there's a risk for a jam/dry clip is 4+ on a d6, all weapons had an ammo roll like that. For a lasgun/laspistol this is 2+. If your ganger has a lasgun, chances are they will keep firing that thing through the entire fight without issue. A boltgun, should you afford it, keeps firing on a 6+. This could represent running out of rare ammunition for the gun, a mechanical failiure your ganger didn't know how to fix etc.

Honestly Stubbers are so cool and under-represented in 40K. They are by far the most interesting one because it's pre WW1 technology straight wall cartridges going into battle and serving guardsman and inquisitors alike. The ruff and ready vibe of them just makes me want to use one in the 41st-42nd Millennium.
@MrMortull
@MrMortull 6 лет назад
Shooters and Sluggers, eh? Hmmmmmmmm~... Stubbers of all sorts are criminally underappreciated, in my opinion. While yes, there ARE many good reasons they've been broadly superseded, there's something to be said for the simple. The tried. The true. In the right hands and with correct care and maintenance Stubbers of all types and sizes need only a fortuitous opportunity to shine! It's worth remembering after all that although the Imperium's most famous enemies are huge, terrifying and monstrously difficult to kill by conventional means, the bread and butter work of PDF, Imperial Guard and even some Astartes forces is to pacify insurrections, retake rebellious planets and destroy Chaos cults... all of which generally consist of very large and packed numbers of lightly armoured (and often NOT AT ALL armoured) targets. An open-field pitched battle between hordes is called a meat grinder for a reason. If you've got a Big Stubber, some good mates and several crates of large-calibre rounds, you can easily be the one doing aaaallllllll the grinding. WAAAGH! :D
@SusCalvin

Shotguns sometmes have higher Strength than lasguns and autoguns. You can see marine scouts gunning down xenos monsters with combat shotguns. Looks like most shotguns in baseline human hands have Strength 3 as normal.

TY for another great video. Most 40k players completley overlook the heavy stubber unless they played Necromunda or feild IG Tanks. I'd rather equip my tanks w/stubbers than storm bolters due to an extra 12' range & getting 3 shots instead of 2, & the extra point of AP really doesnt do so much against light infantry who more often than not fail their 5+ armor save. I really love the way you cover each piece of equipment w/its own episode & the series you're doing on the ships of the imperial fleet is something I really enjoy having played battlefleet gothic backin the 90's. TY again & keep up the great work

The heavy stubber was the mainstay heavy weapon in old Necromunda. It was reasonably cheap to start with one.

I think stubguns are a lot less standard than a lasgun. It's easier for every little machine shop to make their own version. Stubguns and autoguns pop up in plenty of enforcer troops, among civilians and planetary militias. Lasguns might be stamped out in huge amounts but a stubgun is something even the most basic industrial world can make independently.

I agree I remember reading somewhere that these were the standard issue weapon for PDF forces on most agro worlds where they have very little in terms of manufacturing capabilities.
@SusCalvin
@SusCalvin Год назад
@@kelvinsantiago7061 In the rules, it would be too much work to describe every little stubgun variations. Your character has a generic stub pistol, sniper rifle or autogun. I'm fine with it, I don't like poring over pages of pages of gun rules. Lasguns got a lot of variations in the RPGs, they looked like small differences that have developed over time. People can still take a lasgun pattern from another side of the galaxy and slap a laspack into it. There is a fun category of lasguns, laslocks. They're to a lasgun what a breech-loading rifle is to an automatic rifle. They are made when locals are forced to manufacture lasguns with what they got on hand, and have no standard either. Lasguns are dirt simple to maintain apparently, so the ducal guard on some backwater planet where everyone has bows can have a limited number of imported lasguns.
@kelvinsantiago7061
@kelvinsantiago7061 Год назад
@@SusCalvin indeed lasguns are the superior choice but if a ducal guard has the resources to import Lasguns which are easy to manta in but impossible to reproduce it would be wiser to instead import Stub guns which despite being inferior are much easier to reverse engineer and reproduce with local materials (no need for focusing cristales or completa circuitry, just Steel, Wood and Gunpowder). This is just my personal opinion tho.
@SusCalvin
@SusCalvin Год назад
@@kelvinsantiago7061 Imported technology tends to sit with the local elite and their personal goons. It's sometimes as much status symbol as practicality. You could give people bows and flintlock guns in the tabletop RPG rules if you liked. Dark Heresy makes you travel around a lot.

Comprehensive! I love these armoury videos about the weapons that, lore-wise, are ubiquitous in the Imperium. Stubbers, auto-weapons, missile launchers, shotguns... They're not glamorous like bolters or melta/plasma but they're a reality of life for a vast amount of the Imperium's population. I take it you're planning to tackle the weird, wonderful world of wh40k's grenades too, at some point?
@GrimDarkNarrator
@GrimDarkNarrator 6 лет назад
I'll have to do some research but I already covered something similar to that in my video about missile launchers, and I already talked ad nauseam about frag and krak grenades in other videos. I'm not sure there's much left to say about them.

Caliber only determines diameter and length of casing (7.62x51mm for example), although the case length can give you a good idea of it’s “power” in general that’s not always true. It comes down to muzzle velocity and grain weight for it’s kinetic energy which determines “power” but not necessarily lethality.

The 40k tabletop RPGs love to fill page after page with stuff, including ammo types. You can sit and slap increasingly esoteric sights, sensors, ammo types etc on your fictional gun. Lasguns had an ammo type that turns them into makeshift hot-shot lasguns with some sort of overcharged laspack at the cost of lower reliability.

6.2mm at 200 meters per second would be considered pathetic even in our time. .22LR (basically the weakest catridge widely used) is 5.7mm and going almost twice that velocity. Even considering super dense futuristic bullet materials, i cant imagine anyway it could match even a weak .22

Only War had mechanics for playing downtime in between fights. Just because it's a military RPG doesn't mean you fight all the time. One thing iggies could do was run the grey market swap-meet back on base. The munitorum support rules usually gave you either officially assigned or loaned equipment. They know you have one of the Emperor's shotguns in your locker, and expect you to maintain it and have it ready for inspection. When the Munitorum assigns you the wrong bit, it's sometimes a blessing as well. Then you have a piece of gear that they have no official memory of, that you could pocket for future missions or trade with some other regiment back on base. Looted stuff could be traded as well. The punishment if you get caught is whipping and the commissar taking your stuff.
@SusCalvin
@SusCalvin Год назад
@@GrimDarkNarrator Getting caught dealing with the grey market back on base in Only War was a minor offense. They just whip you if you let the commissar find out. It was unofficially recognised by some commanders as long as you didn't do it too openly. As lots of guardsmen from different worlds with loot from battlezone after battlezone congregate, people start to see if they can swap three "lost" plasma flasks their squad can't use for something different. Stereotypically, this is something ratlings engage in.

@SusCalvin Год назад
We played up how rare priests are. Most stuff was handled by local tech-guilds. You can live in a hive city and never see a priest of Mars. The tech-guilds and hive houses form little local monopolies on the scraps of knowledge they got. Some hereditary tech-clan can be the only ones on site who knows this huge industrial fan works. They don't know what it connects to, but everyone knows everything will screw up if this fan stops operating.
