To be a space marine first, you need to be born on a chapter planet. Then, be selected for trials. The trials are different for every chapter and subchapter of Space Marines.

Cherubs are usually created from vat-growned bodies, but some times from babies who have some lethal disease or something else. Essentially, in the Imperium rise culture of Death. They believe that Emperor gives His very life in defense of Mankind, and now sustain in endless suffering upon the Golden Throne of Terra but still giding and protecting Humanity in this horrible state of "undeath". So every single human being must act like his God and Savior - with great selflessness and dedication sacrifice himself for the good of Empire of Mankind. So servo-skulls as they called - basic drones of the Imperium of Man. They can record videos, help in medical manipulations, or carry weapons, ammunition and etc. Created only from skulls of truly loyal citizens, saints and so on. Its considered one of the forms of honor in the eyes of citizens of the Imperium, that you can continue your service for betterment of Humanity and the God-Emperor.

@LaPlaceRabbit as about as much sense in this universe 😆. You'll find that in this universe, everything gets twisted in horrific ways and that everyone has a tragic story that led them to the monsters they are now.
