IN THIS VIDEO:
Warm compresses have a lot of benefits. When done correctly, they can help treat a lot of eye conditions: Meibomian gland dysfunction (mgd) and dry eyes, chalazions or a stye, as well as blepharitis (posterior belpharitis). In fact, warm compresses for the eyes is one of the most common blepharitis treatments, dry eye treatments, and stye treatments done at home. You have be careful, because sometimes you can do warm compresses incorrectly. If you do it too long, or have the warm compress too hot, it can cause inflammation, and that would be counterproductive with blepharitis or rosacea. There are better heated eye masks to provide the best treatment. These masks can be some of the best meibomian gland dysfunction home therapies you can do. But, there is a safe and effective way to doing hot compresses. Dr. Guymon, Dr. EyeGuy has you covered.

Dr EYE GUY, where can I get those warm compresses mask, especially the 3rd one?

I have been dealing with MGD for a few years now and seen multiple ophthalmologists. After discovering this channel and the level of information you have offered in these videos, I cannot understand why none of the doctors I have seen over the years have not gone over the risks of compresses and importance of correctly using them, among all the other things. I can’t even explain how lost I have felt trying to manage this condition, it affects every aspect of life and I just get blown off, told to wash and compress.

You are not alone. Also the knowledge and the level of what we know now, especially about MGD has increased a lot in just the last few years. It makes me wonder what we will know in 5 years time. Luckily Dry eye Treatments and research is entering a golden age, at least it feels like it. Hopefully this can give a lot of people hope and direction.

I’ve recently had cross linking surgery to stabilise karakotonus (sorry for spelling) and using compress to address dry eye. I’ve always suffered from dry eyes but gotten worse after treatment. Eye massaging was mentioned (for the first time ever) almost in passing by the clinician - nothing as detailed and helpful as your videos. Thank you. 🙏

Try using some all natural castor oil drops. You can put some in a small, sterile amber dropper bottle and then add a few drops of all natural tea tree oil. Try a couple drops in each eye then a warm compress. Research shows castor oil is effective and safe for dry eye and tea tree oil kills blepharitis bacteria.

I wish I had seen this before. I saw the one on massage because I have been massaging after heating up my eyes with rice sock and I damp washcloth underneath. That explains why some days my vision is better than others. You’re the only one who has explained how to do both things separately that I have found. Thank you for your videos and you seem very friendly so it’s comfortable to watch like you’re not stuffy! 😂 I like your three suggestions and there’s three different products that are safer because she can regulate the temperature better so I’m gonna order one of those. Thank you so much for this video. I thought I was the weird one for having such a hard time with warm compresses but you addressed a lot of my concerns and difficulties regarding them in this video so I'm very grateful for that. One question I still have though is, is it normal for your eyes to appear red after warm compresses? I noticed that the outer white part of my eyes are especially red right after a warm compress, but there is no real pain that follows and the redness subsides rather quickly.
@DrEyeGuy
@DrEyeGuy 2 года назад
It can be common... the warmth can dilate the blood vessels or cause a little bit of inflammation. Sometimes it can be a tricky balance between treating the oil glands effectively and not causing too much inflammation. thank you for watching and commenting... I'm glad the video could help.

My optometrist told me to use dry eye drops. It did nothing. This is a natural way to go and my red eyes are are much whiter.

Haha ! I cracked up when you whizzed that washcloth across the room 🤣. That’s how I feel about a washcloth cooling or heating too quickly too ! I’ve been having a problem when I cry . My under eyes stayed puffy for months last time , then I cried again yesterday. Now they’re a puffy mess today even worse! I’m 46 . So I know age doesn’t help. But what can I do to get the swelling gone ? I’d just gotten the bags to look halfway normal and now they’re just ridiculous again. I’ve tried cold eye roller , I’ve tried a heated eye massage device that you put oil around the eyelids and massage . It vibrates too . No luck . Thank you 🙏 😊

This is a great video with good info. I woke up today with what I thought was a cyst or large sty inside my lower eye lid. I went to my eye doc. And he told me it was a blocked oil gland. I have dry eye disease which is attributed to Sjogrens disease. He expressed the oil gland and it was pretty painful for a bit. He’s an MD and I totally trust him. A suggestion he gave me was to buy those “hot hands” instant heat packs for gloves. They stay warm for several hours and are a nice consistent heat. Costco sells a box of 160 for $13. He also said this is common as people age. Enlarged gland was pretty big and it was full of what look like white toothpaste…very thick. He also gave me a RX for Tobramycin/Dexamethsone eye drops to help with swelling. Thank you for your great video. It made me realize that others deal with this too.

@27kjh
@27kjh Год назад
@@lawrencethompson465My Microwave is a 1100 watt. I heat the damp cloth for 20 seconds at the highest temp. Although the thickness of your face cloth and the temp of the water your damping the cloth with can all make a bit of a difference. You would just need to play around to find out the temp that works best for you. When I first posted my comment I was damping two clothes and wrapping with a dry one. Since then I’m using a thicker face clothes and I only need one wet one dry. After I use this compress I wash my eyes with a specific gentle eyewash. Tera Tears foaming eye wash was my favorite but can’t get it here any more. I try to do this twice a day and have found quite an improvement in my eyes.

If I feel I’ve accidentally changed the shape of my cornea from hot compresses and massage, will it change back to its original shape over time? I’ve dealt with stys for almost a year, and after seeing multiple specialists, given multiple prescriptions and drainage procedures, I was told to use heat and massage, but no one told me how hot or how much pressure, so I figured the hotter the compress and harder the massage, the better. watching your video I have a pit in my stomach because I myself have noticed a change in one eye shape from the other, and I thought I was simply overreacting from a year of paying such close attention to my eye, but I fear I may have warped my cornea as you say (I even used the hot egg treatment for months, multiple times a day. Vision seems a little more blurry these days too). My eyes feel so beat up, so tired of feeling like I’m making things worse for myself when I’ve only prayed for healing and direction. If I have altered the shape of my eye from almost a year of intense heat and massage, would an eye doctor be able to diagnose that?

The best is a hot/cold gel back. Put the pack in a pot with just boiled water for 5 - 6 minutes, shake of the excess water, wrap in a clean tea towel and it stays warm for 20 minutes. The great thing about being a gel pack is you can shape it to you eyes shape.

Whats your take on using hot water with a showerhead and using the pressaure from the water as a massage as well. Is this good or bad? I realize this feels good afterwards.
@DrEyeGuy
@DrEyeGuy 2 года назад
That can help. However, sometimes the shower water can actually irritate the eyeball and make them a little bit more red, inflamed, and irritated.

Is a hot/cold compress you either freeze or microwave ok to use? Like if I just hold it on my eye not over my entire face? Or is it best to lay it over both my eyes? Also I was going to make a heat mask using rice like in a heat pack but shaped to my eyes, would that be suitable? Should I sew where my eyes are so they don't have the pressure of the rice on them?
@DrEyeGuy
@DrEyeGuy 2 года назад
Yes, those hot and cold compress can work great, as well as the rice packs. Just make sure they retain the heat for at least 10 minutes, try for 15 minutes. If you can make it so it won't push on your eyes as much, that would be awesome.

Hello doctor, I found a mask that works by heating it with water, with a similar shape to the last one that appears in the video (with holes). Can it be safe for the cornea and for the eye?

For electric compress one , which setting I should use high or medium? The one you told us about cause one doctor on video says use this pads too to help but he said high setting for 20 mins I felt that even medium hi for me it’s too hot Medium seem warm enough High feel like I might get burned But I read online if the temperature not hot at 105 or so oil won’t melt

Would it be safe to use a warm compress on an eye with possibly obstructed meibomian glands? There isn't anything visually obstructing the glands, but if the insides are clogged with hardened meibum, would it still be safe?
@DrEyeGuy
@DrEyeGuy 2 года назад
It's actually usually recommended to do warm compresses to help your oil glands out.

After using it my eye-sight is a little bit dissy for a while, but goes back to normal after a minute or two. Is this normal? I'm also using it quite often, is there a recommended maximum amount of times to use per day, or is more better?
@DrEyeGuy
@DrEyeGuy 2 года назад
Good question.. it could be from the corneal distortion from the pressure of the warm compress. If you want to do it often, I would look into getting a warm compress, like the kne from TearRestore to avoid that.

Thank you doctor. One question: When i massage my eyelids after warm compress, i see a white liquid coming from the eyelids and that white liquid really burns my eyes. Is it normal? Do you think thats the oil we are talking about or something else? Its like a white tear but really burns my eyes.

A lot of times an eye doc, especially an eye doc that treats a lot of dry eye, can evaluate and determine the condition of your meibomian glands. That would be good to know if that is contributing to your symptoms.

Should you do the eye massage right after the warm compress? What are your thoughts on using black tea bags or green tea bags compress instead?
@DrEyeGuy
@DrEyeGuy 2 года назад
Yes, eye massages are usually more effective right after doing a warm compress, as long as you are being careful. Tea bags are great, if there is caffeine, it could help with puffy eye bags as well.

Could the erythromycin ointment my doctor prescribed me be keeping the stye clogged? im doing compresses and cleansing my eyelid, then putting the ointment in my eye and on the stye 4 times a day (so basically keeping the ointment on the stye at all times). I feel discouraged because it won't got away! It doesn't hurt at this point, it is just constantly there!
@DrEyeGuy
@DrEyeGuy 2 года назад
Good question... I wouldn't initially think that it would keep the glands clogged. Make sure you are cleaning your eyelids. How is your stye doing now?
@margaretcrowley6989
@margaretcrowley6989 2 года назад
@@DrEyeGuy Thank you Doc! So the stye is finally gone (after a month!) my PCP gave me a different ointment one with a steroid in it. Im still using it at night because if I don't, it looks like the stye is trying to come back. I think the thing that helped the most is when the compresses loosened it enough to drain the stye.
