Great video. As a 25yr tech, and work on a fleet of 80 ish caravans for last 8 years. 100% of my repairs were only the valve body with a complete flush and filter change. Maybe i just got lucky 🤷‍♂️. Definitely not arguing with you. Just sharing my experiences so far. Keep up the great work 👍

The only problem I have with this video is that the TCC solenoid only costs 27 to 43 dollars. Why not switch it out at the same time you replace the torque converter? Look at it as insurance in case the solenoid was the problem rather than the converter....it will save you ANOTHER couple of grand in repair costs.

Great point my dude. But there will be more work involved with removing the pan. But you make a good point..Its just that I have never had to replace one of those. In fact, we do not even stock them. And there was once a time I was seeing this code twice a week. My repairs was always fr pump and torq converter

My question is that if the tranny fluid isnt thick at all like it was in the video does that mean tte torque converter is bad cuz I highly doubt mines would lock up on me and i have a 09 dodge journey not too long ago i changed the transmission filter and my transmission fluid was clean as a whistle very little particles on the magnet it was also times i put a good amount of gas in it and it shifted like it was brand new managed to get up to 80mph and it seem like it acts up when the car is hot between 20-40mph but when its cool it wanna take off like a bad outta hell

@@OnlineMechanicTipsI changed the transmission fluid and got a two codes 68 & 69. Torque converter solenoid turned off and transmission slipping. The 94 GMC Sierra C3500 has an extra filter that uses an oil filter to filter the transmission fluid on the used U-Haul truck I purchased from U-Haul. The pan was clean unlike my 72 Chevy El Camino. My first fluid change on her and I was shocked by how much material was in the bottom of the pan. My question is do I need to change my torque converter? Or should I just replace the whole transmission like I've done three times on ground with the El Camino? I had an overhead camper on her back until she was stolen and the camper was damaged. The camper ended up sliding off the tailgate onto the freeway. I subscribed to your channel and thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I agree with the recommendation here. I just overhauled my family van transmission in my garage. The torque converter and input clutch set are the only parts you need to replace for that P0740. Should you replace the solenoid? That’s up to you. It’s easy enough to check the pin connectors to see if you have a solenoid out of spec. But from personal experience from completing an overhaul on my 62TE at 164k miles the only parts needing replaced were the torque converter and input clutches. Save your money folks.

I think the lockup and fourth gear is going out seeing how it tends to start surging and shaking under load in forth gear and lockup on the 2001 chevy 5.7 work van they recently bought. It also has a whine that veries with rpm but fluid looks fine. It also shows a code for cylinder 4 miss fire. I keep telling them it needs service before it gets expensive but so far nothing. If it blows up maybe I get early retirement at this rate🙄

I just bought a 2019 Caravan GT.. transmission was replaced at 180k miles which is verified by carfax, AMCOO & owner had receipt - Previous owner used van to do uber. The van is in immaculate condition and a lot of service records - So far only issue I had was replacing the dreaded oil filter housing everyone replaces with the upgraded metal DORMAN housing. Well, I just bought the van off him at 240k (Never owned a caravan before) I feel like it has loud air like swoosh sound when I accelerate. (Transmission shifts perfect when I drive) But also at times from drive to reverse and reverse to drive it might turn off. Today got the P0868 Code. I read somewhere it could be the TCC Solenoid? or Is it the convertor? or the trans fluid pressure sensor itself? I just purchased the trans filter & fluid to do a service next week. (No check engine light but when I scanned it that P0868 code came up) I will also change the alternator this weekend as it was flooded with oil due to the oil filter house leaking. (The battery light came on - we suspect since alt got oil and belt as well - it was not charging battery right) But there's definitely something going on in the trans due to the loud swoosh and P0868 code. Any help is appreciated.

Before you go ripping that transmission out check your resistance on the solenoids to see if any are bad. you can do it without taking anything apart other than a plug. Plenty of documentation on what pins to jump and the range of acceptable resistance. Pins 3 & 10 between 1.6-1.8 Ohms is acceptable for a TCC solenoid.

I replaced the torque convertor and the solenoid and pump originally, did all 3 speed speed sensors because I broke 2 of them taking the trans out. the compounder due to slipping going into 5th. P0740 popped back up and the dealership near me said the valve body or pcm was most likely the culprit, so I replaced them with the module at the same time. torque convertor still won't fully lock up and p0740 is on. I did not replace the valves I will try that next. I'm doing it myself because everyone want's 5k or more to fix it. probably should of just bought a rebuild kit at this point@@OnlineMechanicTips

Biggest symptom is shudder condition. Partial lockup can occur in 2-4th gear with full lockup in 5-6th. If the TCC is stuck in full lockup, stalling at low speeds will be a symptom. If partial lockup is not holding, you’ll feel a shudder. I have a 2016 T&C in the shop with this issue right now. Came in with stored P0740 with no other fault codes present.

Do you think that the TCC Solenoid programmed strategy is causing excessive valve bore wear? In my experience with the GM stuff(07-14 4L60), the PWM strategy causes valve bore wear which ultimately causes torque converter/trans failure. I drove a 15 Caravan today with the P0740 code, no shuddering, or perceived “slip”. However, at cruise, it definitely had 100~RPM fluctuation once warm(just like the Chevys). I was hoping I could bump the lockup solenoid pressure up with HP Tuners to delay it’s death lol, but I didn’t see anything I could adjust to help. Just a thought
@AustinKirkham
@AustinKirkham Год назад
How about always diag the issue? And make the judgment call after diagnosing. Just had one where the solenoid was actually bad. Causing the tc to lock or unlock at incorrect times specifically while stopped causing stalling. There was material in the pan however the vehicle has 80k miles. So it is unrealistic to automatically assume every time it will be x failure. Majority of the time you are correct. However in that 1 in 10 variable for example that 1 customer that couldve had their transmission saved by correct diag gets the hose financially. And this vehicle im referring to had already been to two shops already and they both quoted trans without even dropping the pan.

Mine p0744 i think it can be the solenoid for the torque converter specifically. But here it is. My car doesnt move. (2010 nissan altima 3.5 sr V6 cvt) now i have been trying to understand how each important piece of the cvt works. The belt chain, the two pulleys the shift solenoids that exert hydraulic pressure on the cvt by using the fluid, and the torque converter solenoid which exerts pressure, most likely exerts fluid pressure on the torque converter to get it to pick up the power of the engine and transfer it into the transmission. I already replaced the cvt fluid without dropping the pan but it did nothing except one thing. Remove the chatter i was hearing everytime i turned the car on THAT had been sitting after it broke down AND only got louder over a few days time. (The fluid especially when low which it was drains out of the torque converter)

@OnlineMechanicTips
@OnlineMechanicTips Год назад
Hello my friend, in my experience I have found when this happen because of the T/conv prematurely coming apart, it tends to leave excessive clutch debri in the pan which tends to clog up the filter which tends to starve the pump which tends to shorten its life. At that point because of the amount of work required to replace the T/conv anyway, at this time it seems to be the perfect time to go in with a new pump because of what I mentioned earlier. But at 60K your pump could very well be just fine, but the risk outweighs the chance you take in an attempt to save an extra couple hundred bulks.

The only code my car is giving is for the thermostat and the housing. But my issue is shifting. It wants to shift threw the gears. Too fast, then it wants to lug. Or drag along. It wont downshift. And go. Is this the torque converter?? Why no code. I do know why the thermostats code. Hit a deer awhile back. Kinda bent some stuff. No overheating. No problem with that. 2015 dodge journey rt. Brother I drive a Mercedes Benz W202 C240 , I have the following codes P 0743 ( torque converter clutch ) electrical and the following code P 0758 which is shift solenoid B "SS" B , so when I put the car on drive, it doesn't change Gears , it just stay on the first gear, when I drive it for a while , for example, I drive to the gasoline station and stop there and the car on P park then shift the gear to drive it will not engage the when put to drive D I have to manipulate by put it back to "P" the rev it up a bit then put back to drive" D" it will make a hash knock sound when it engages drive , and I have no engine light show on the dashboard. Can it be a torque converter, because I found the speed sensor it had a crack on the covered magnet , I bought a new conductor plate and I get the same results, please give me a tip what could be the problem

This -may- be the exact problem I just started having. I have reduced acceleration. If I put my foot on the gas all the way down the engine does not go high in RPMs . If I get the car up to highway speed (65 mph) and expect a boost of power and acceleration.. it’s just not there. I may get up to 20-15 percent increase of high rpm’s (torque ?) increase. Does anyone have an idea how much this repair goes for ? I’m in metro New York area so I’m sure the labor is higher than on Ohio or Florida. Just looking for an honest idea of how much $$

Ok we just had our transmission seal replaced, and the flywheel, the transmission was working perfectly until the seal started leaking, we had the trans removed and found the bad flywheel, so both were repaired, now after re-installing the trans, now the car won't shift into gear, if put into reverse, it'll work for a min, but this is what I find odd, when the gear shifter is placed in low, it only reads gears 3-4, not 1 thru 4, so I'm really confused on which way to go from here, oh the vehicle is a 2013 Dodge Journey SXT FWD 3.6 L. Thank you so much for the explanation; BUT....our 2011 T+C with about 80,000 miles started that P0740. I did replace the little solenoid (You aid that is not the problem), and yes I Still have that stupid fault. The transmission fluid has been replaced three times in it's life, and twice had the pan removed, cleaned and filter and fluid replaced. Both times the magnet did NOT have any heavy collections of dirt nor friction pad residue. It shifts perfectly into and out of every gear as it is supposed to; BOTH automatically AND by hand shifting into each gear. I have NO transmission slipping, clunking, over heating; high speed stalls, nor is the fluid blackened, smells burnt, nor darker than when new. BUT have had that stupid P0740 for over 10,000 miles and the transmission still works correctly. Any ideas, PLEASE? Thanks in advance.

Hey bud, this could will not affect shifting much at all, its just the light. The the TCM command lockup and the T/Conv has problems internally holding lock up, this code will likely be generated. The fix is a new T/Conv. I tend to go in and replace the T/Conv and Front Pump on such a problem. 100% problem solve after that. I have never replaced that so called TCC Solenoid for a P0740. Thanks for watching, please thumbs up the video and subscribe to the channel, thanks

@@OnlineMechanicTips THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I just can't see spending so much money to replace a Torque converter with so few miles and it shifts perfectly. Could the check engine light staying on with the Po740 code be an electrical glitch? I have replaced the ECU because it would not send the signal for the alternator to charge the battery, and the alternator was good. It befuddles me that a torque converter an not last 70,000 mile.

I have the same issue on 2015 Town & Country - transmission shifts fine the light went off for about 3 weeks so I thought it was a wrong code (fuel cap) but it just came back on and it is still reading torque converter. But there seems to be no issue physically
@ARTICFROST777
@ARTICFROST777 3 года назад
@@DawgFan7 the interesting thing regarding this code is that for the most part it would not induce any drivability issues. The only issue you’ll see if you’re attentive is a reduction in gas mileage. Since the torque converter is having issues locking up, when you’re on the highway your cruising Rpms are going to be higher than normal causing that gas mileage reduction. I would just keep an eye on your fluid condition since the fluid will degrade a tad bit faster as a result of this code as well.
