Baldy is a formidable mountain and should be taken seriously. Just because it is so close to a big city people don't realize how wild it actually is.

Julian Sands is a famous, fabulous actor! I can't believe he's missing. This is how my darling husband died, hiking alone, a fearless mountain climber who would tackle any climb, always alone despite the known dangers for doing so, including Mt. Baldy. I am praying for the dear actor and his family.

The chances of survival for the actor guy is very slim. He’s been missing about 8 days now. They probably don’t want to leave the car there just in case there’s a criminal element involved. Missing 8 days in that frigid, nasty weather. It doesn’t look good but maybe the family wanted the car moved. Perhaps, the park service people know something no one else does.

@@penelopelopez8296 Your last sentence was meaningless. What "something" could they know of and not tell the public? The mountain is still open to hikers and if there was a dangerous element such as a man-eating bear or cougar (or "psycho" human) they would post signs about it as they've done after every such prior occurrence and probably close the area.

So sad that Mr. Sands is still missing, while others have tragically lost their lives on this mountain:( I grew-up in Alta Loma, S. Cali, not too far from Mt. Baldy and was up there on a regular basis as love that kind of terrain...many years back, a fine, young man from our church was lost up there after hiking alone, and my Dad was one of the Rescuers who carried him out after a fatal slip and fall. I still well remember the terrible heartbreak for his family and all who loved him so very much!!

Julian Sands is a friend and a climbing partner of mine back in the 1990s. He has done major mountains on expeditions all over the world and I found him to be a safe and skilled Mountaineer. His solo dramatic readings in New York and elsewhere should be legendary. And he was a boon companion both on and off the mountains and not some kind of fake movie star. I pray he is found or just walks out. We all know solo winter hikes or climbs, the latter word more accurate in this situation, are dangerous and the unexpected can happen no matter what the skill level

I hiked up Mt Baldy today to see if I could help with the search as I'm an experienced avid hiker. I headed up at 1:45pm and went all the way up to the top ridge called The Devil's Backbone. It appeared as though I had been the only one as there were no tracks in the snow besides mine. I can honestly say that the biggest threat to hikers is the ice. I spotted two areas near the peak where it looked like human skid or slip marks but when I tried to examine closer, I nearly slipped off myself. The ice near the edges of the trail, especially near the peak, are deceptive because you can't tell it's ice. It looks like powdered snow. This whole time, I never spotted any search teams nor saw any helicopters or drones. It was eerily silent despite several people recently missing on Baldy.

There is a saying among aviators "There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots." I got myself stranded on Mt hood once. Didn't have the right footwear for the snowy conditions. I ended up encountering an icy section with a huge drop, risked it for about ten feet then turned around... realized even going back was now too risky... all the slushy snow on the way up was turning to ice as the evening was turning to night. I had planned to camp so I had enough gear to stay warm and try to get some rest next to a cedar tree. It was a cold night but in the morning I saw the drop was pretty extreme, and I'm glad I did not try hiking any more after I realized how slippery it was getting. I hike all the time, nothing like that has happened before or since, that melting snow to ice stuff can turn a walk in the park on its side in a hurry. We have the same stuff happen in close by trails and canyons in Vancouver, BC. People see a sunny day and don't realize just how FAST and furious the mtns. and trails can be just a few hundred feet higher. then darkness falls. and those videos of desert hiking/canyon travellers, wearing little more than flip flops and not carrying a girl scout compass or water or good led lights. man. I've been up Baldy a few times. Even in good weather, the trick is making sure you head down the way you came up. It's one thing aiming for peak on the way up. It's completely different when you are at the top of Mt. Baldy and several of the ways down all look the same. A definite place for a map and compass. So sad people were lost and missing.

this is not a place to go to get an escape, this is a high-altitude mountain in the winter, not an average hike. you have to have mountaineering experience with the right gear and know how to use it. most of these people are just going out to prove they did something dangerous with their phone and taking selfies. Thats the motivation. a lot of them don't even hardly hike, on a good summer day never mind the winter. so, smarten up people it might save your life.

@@jaredl8590 Even with crampons, one wrong move, or one very strong wind gust, and the drop is foreboding. Doing it alone? Insanity. I am from the Pacific Northwest. . The first and foremost rule in hiking in the bush is that you never, ever hike alone. The optimum number of people is 4. That way if someone gets hurt 2 people can hike out together to get help, and the other person can stay with the one that is injured to continue to render aid.

The 'romantic ideal' is to go out alone, but growing up hiking many of the nearby mountains back in the 1980s in Boy Scouts, it was always stressed to go out at least in pairs, not to mention pack away a whole slew of stuff--namely warm clothes no matter what. Obviously, one didn't need as much gear hiking in the lower elevation mountains like the Santa Monica Mountains, but we hiked often in the Angeles National Forest, and a few mountains in the San Bernadino area (we never did get to hike Baldy itself) and the rule of thumb was to take as much gear for safety sake and getting lost as one could fit and hike with a buddy or small group. This time of year, we did an annual lower elevation snow hike in the Angeles National Forest (much prep), and a desert hike and day hike in the Santa Monicas. I could not imagine doing a day hike into the snow by myself, and these deaths and missing people should serve as a warning not to do so.

I worked as a forest ranger in the Mt. Baldy Ranger district years ago. The San Gabriels are a young mountain range, geologically speaking, and are rather steep in many places. That makes for treacherous conditions in foul weather and dangerous conditions even in good weather. I've hiked and camped solo/with dog in the San Gabriels, but always kept to the lower elevations (less than 8,000 ft.) and popular trails at those times. Being an experienced hiker means being sensible - even when part of the joy is the challenge of the environment. Here's hoping Julian Sands is found and rescued.

I used to live in Spain and my home was about 2000 ft above sea level built on the side of a mountain which was about another 2000 ft above my home, covered in a pine forest, which had bare mountain rocky tracks that avid trekkers and runners would use in all weathers to get up and around the mountain. I sometimes used to watch them disappear has little dots over the summit, and think that how risky and dangerous it would be if they slipped, injured themselves and with the blazing day heat and sun and the high winds and cold nights being trapped and just died up there. Doing such an activity alone just multiplies the element of risk.
