Toolrooms where I worked over the past 30 years would not even let you in the shop unless you had safety glasses on, some for any visitors, same for steel toe shoes.

Just put the glasses on when you turn up for work, keep them on until you leave. Problem solved. Most professional shops have this as policy. From Rolls Royce to McLaren ... they just wear safety glasses at all times on the shop floor. As for John's hearing .. you are flat out wrong there, being slightly deaf does NOT protect you from further damage ... actually it accelerates it. You have damaged/destroyed say 50% of the tiny hairs inside the ear .. they do NOT grow back. The lod noises are still detroying them ... but you have less of them. Worse, you don't hear the noises as being so loud so you take even less care to protect them. Protect your remaining hearing! Think if it this way: if you had one eye left, how much care would you take of the other one. Tinnitus and hearing loss are the second major cause of suicide after depression. Think about that for a moment ...

I’m a retired maintenance supervisor who was in charge of a large group (40) of tradesmen. Any time one was observed without wearing their compliment of PPE got rewarded with a 2 day suspension without pay. Continued behaviour put them on the path to termination, and yes, there were terminations. You guys should be taking safety very seriously and be checking each other often. Can you imagine the feeling if one of you witnessed the other doing work without safety glasses for instance, said nothing, and they lost an eye. Think on that for a bit. Make safety a priority please.

Hi How I hate the safety police. If I choose not to wear glasses or ear defenders or whatever it is my choice I have been doing my thing for nearly 40 years and have learnt that there are no accidents there are only actions and consequences. I have seen many young student hurt themselves never seriously but with enough pain to make them more vidulent in the future. There is nothing like a little pain to make you consentrate and once you have had a minor incedent you learn and move on and teach.

@@paulnolan1352 I am, and I wanted to make sure all the people who worked for me went home with all their fingers, toes, eyesight and no injuries so they could enjoy their time with their families and see their children grow up. I worked in an industrial environment many years ago for a company that had a bad reputation for injuring their staff and they wisely decided to do something about it, and over the next few years strove to attain a 5 star safety rating, which they finally achieved. So proud were they that they decided to invite the press over to report on the award ceremony, all the directors there in their suits with big smiles holding this certificate when suddenly there was a loud crack and three contractors fell through the roof and landed in a groaning heap right next to them in full view of the cameras, not the kind of publicity they were hoping for !!

The slides were rattling in their grooves so much I thought the cam chain tensioner had collapsed ! Check the induction side of the motor before going over things you know to be good : )

i worked with a handyman for a while, early 2000s, we attended to a small family business to refurb their office and reception. whenever we needed to enter the factory floor to retrieve various tools and equipment, you had to don various PPE. safety glasses, hard hat, vest. there were signs at every station for the PPE requirements and it was a constant reminder to everyone of safety. even the break room had big posters on safety and PPE. the wife/receptionist saw my boss in what looked like sneakers/runners and was being torn a new one, when he interrupted her and told her they were a safety shoe with a steel toe cap. he had to actually take a shoe off just to prove his point. he was then asked to get actual designated safety work boots to ensure that if inspectors came in while we were working it wouldn't affect them and their safety rating. he did. then charged them the cost of the boots. when they received the bill they wrote a cheque on the spot without question. some businesses take safety very seriously and others only after something goes wrong.

The Caterpillar dealer I worked at years ago had a 3208 come in. It had broken the intake valve head off in one cylinder of the V8. It bounced around in that cylinder, came out of the intake, and bounced around in the other 3 cylinders. These engines had a common intake plenum cast in and used a crossover between banks that the air filter housing bolted down to. Somehow that valve head crossed over and bounced around in all 4 cylinders of that opposite side. It was found in the muffler, pounded into a ball about half the size of a golf ball. I still do not comprehend how that engine ran that long. The block was bored OS with one cylinder requiring a sleeve. Safety first lads. When manure goes wrong, it always goes wrong in the blink of an eye.

As the director responsible for health and safety you have failed the Management of Health and Safety, the video is essentially an unsolicited admission of guilt. PPE is a bifg deal here in the states... I have zer oexperience with UK / europe but over here OSHA takes it seriously and even if seen on a youtube video they get world of it and will visit a shop.. im big on PPE when i work on my own stuff.. if im impact wrenching or hammering on metal I have my protective headset on.. face shield and gloves for griding or any work where i might get filings in my eyes or pieces of metal pinging my hands / arms.. yes im lucky enough when working in my own garage to have Air Conditioning so wearing thicker clothing is easier to handle.. it seems in the UK no one does.. running a lathe or a boring bar or the block surfacing machine are all places metal shavings can easily end up in your eye.. and it doesnt take much to cause real harm... ive had a hammer fall on my head from above when on a jobsite.. and was able to joke around about it because it whacked my hardhat.. I hada cutoff wheel fly apart on an angle grinder and my face shield and jacket got pinged with pieces that bounced off the bench after hitting the safety guard I hadnt removed... we all know that working in a machine shop is a dangerous place to work and takes respect of each other and of the machines.. but we dont have to make it any more dangerous than it is already by not wearing PPE

On the Pep/HS point never take a blind eye approach to it the legal implications can be immense. That said there is finality in fatality. Always have risk assessments documented and available for inspection. A direct issue is the wearing of gloves in a machine shop generally no never any rotational parts can grab the glove and pull a hand finger arm inward, muchio ouchio. Also short sleeves should be worn when using such machinery for the same reason. as indeed should be the use of all safety screens specified with a given machine. Lets be honest would you look for a gas leak with a candle in a power cut?

I`ve just put an oscilloscope on a Subaru alternator that was not supposed to be charging enough. The car was running rough. The garage said it was charging but not enough to run the car properly. I tested it and it makes 14.2 volts. I thought that was OK. But might be a phase down. The oscilloscope said all 3 phases are ok. Perhaps there is a short when the amps go up but I`m thinking the cars ECU might need a resetting or something. There is a comms terminal on the alternator that the ECU tells it when it should charge.
