Well to be fair, Yugioh is like making a deal or transaction. Killing your opponents won’t resolve anything basically for ultimate power and more you have to complete certain steps for said contract to be resolved. Hence why Kaiba wanted to duel little Yugi to put him in enough danger so the pharaoh could respond. One last thing. Dueling is about proving your the best, ego and pride is heavily involved so therefore you have to duel, this is the whole gimmick of the world of Yugioh. That’s why we duel in real life for the title of KOG, but also for fun.
Like the Gx finale where the literal grim reaper of the Yu-Gi-Oh universe shows up and instead of just telling Jaden "alright I'm just gonna leave ive already got what I want" a duel is initiated.
@@ishmaelvilmenay3340 This, as weird as it is sometimes they did a great job giving an explanation to all of this. It's like a ritual, the same with the god cards or millennium items for example. You have to win them via a duel or else you cant use them/they just kill you for stealing them or trying to circumvent the "rules".
Hey, they're dueling in Atem's tomb and Obelisk had a good bond with Kaiba. If anyone would be able to call on the big guy from beyond the grave, it's be Kaiba.
@@caiusdrakegaming8087 Agreed PLUS Seto Kaiba IS the reincarnation of Priest Seto who if i recall was not only Atem's cousin BUT also VERY faithful to him and Egypt with the respect going both ways so chances are that could have been enough for Obelisk to decide for himself to help out lets be honest the Egyptian God Cards have done quite a few non-duel related things like destroying Pegasus's employees and scaring Pegasus in his nightmare
@@ked49Are you sure it's not just that he was just bloody to stubborn to win that he decided to, literally, punch Death in the face to gain an upper hand against his opponent?
"Wait a minute, did you just summon a monster you don't own?" "Yeah, so?" "That's against the rules, isn-" *Punched by Obelisk "SCREW THE RULES, IT'S A GOD!!"
would be a bit funnier if it was Obelisk saying that last bit. like: ''SCREW THE RULES, I'M A GOD!!'' *a tear falls from Kaibas face* ''he remembered''
Fun fact: in his solo duel against aigami, you could say that kaiba pulled a litteral deus ex machina: A God from the machine. After all, Kaiba used tech to ressurect Obelisk.
Aigami: How? How did you do this?! Kaiba: What are you babbling about? Of course a God can call forth another God. Aigami: Do you really believe your own hype that much? Kaiba: *I AM THE HYPE!!!*
Kaiba is a reincarnation of Priest Seto. This makes him also, by technicality, "The Pharoah." The technology helped, but Kaiba magically summoned Obelisk. Kaiba did not use technology to bring back Obelisk at all, except using his jet to get there lol The Egyptian Gods will come to the Pharoa's aid. It's only because it was the resting place of the Millennium Items. That flash in his eyes signifies him calling out for Obelisk. it makes more sense in the sub, where the translation is "call out" instead of "summon." In my head I imagine Obelisk telepathically going "Kaiba! Good to see you-- Oh you need me to throw some hands? I'm down."
@@XXMatt0040XX I had this exact thought process too. The sub really does help fill in how he summoned Obelisk. The sub shows Kaiba having the same inner monologue like his dub but he was feeling more regret than angry he's about to die and he's close to finishing his project. In the dub, when he sees Atem, he says, "I will Duel him again!" The sub, when he sees Atem, he whispers, "Yugi..." I felt like Atem symbolically giving the thumbs up was like his acknowledgement. "Go ahead Kaiba, use the Gods. You have every right to do so... Obelisk is hearing your plea, Kaiba.."
I like the choice of card for Atem to draw in defense of Yugi. Mahad is the priest who originally commanded the Dark Magician, and who merged his Ba and Ka together to become an eternal guardian for the pharaoh. Having returned to the afterlife and reunited with his friends and family, Atem has also reunited with the man who protected him in so many duels throughout the story. So, for his brief return from the afterlife, Atem brought along a friend to defend his irreplaceable partner.
Also notable is that Mahad is summoned facing towards Atem, kneeling. Every other monster is summoned facing away from the player, but Mahad is so devoted to his king that faces towards him in respect before taking to the field.
Another cool thing is that Mahad is LIGHT attribute when Dark Magician is DARK. Likely a reference to the Pharaoh having finished his journey and the darkness of Zorc, the Shadow Games, and the Milennium items being purged
2 things to note: 1) Yugi's deck in this is basically retrained from his season 1 deck + new cards in it 2) Yugi's only participating in the millennium puzzle tournament because he wanted to save Bakura from Aigami
And Joey. Yugi knew Aigami erased him too. Which Ifelt did Joey dirty from how easy it was. That man took a direct hit from Phoenix Ra in a Shadow Game and stayed standing, Aigami should've had to work to take out Joey.
@@littlekuribohimposte Nah, Card Games are just timeless. They date back thousands of years ago from and I'm just reading off my google search here before AD1000 from the Mamluk Empire in Egypt. So Kazuki Takahashi might've been inspired by that. Rest in Peace King of Games
Honestly now that I think about it, apart from drawing from the ground, Obelisk should be allowed to summon itself, since it has to tribute 3 monsters in order to be normal summoned because of it's effect.
They were dueling in the tomb of the Pharaoh's, Kaiba was a Pharaoh in a past life, and the God's are said to serve the Pharaoh's in their time of need, Kaiba summoning Obelisk mirrors the time when Atem first summoned Obelisk against Thief King Bakura
I love that despite NOT wanting the Pharaoh to return, Aigami pushing Yugi to his absolute limit was what caused Atem to step in and go "You should go home now." I know some people have their grievances with the moment, but to me, it doesn't at all take away from Yugi's abilities. We've seen time and time again how good of a duelist he is. Atem stepping in kind of reminds me of how Yugi stepped in when Atem was battling Gansley in the Virtual World Arc. Atem was taking hit after hit, and one more might have exhausted him to the point of not being able to continue. That's exactly what happened here. Not to mention, with Yugi superimposed on the Pharaoh's face, it's a clear message to the audience that they ARE working together; just as they ALWAYS did. Plus, it allows for Yugi to finally be able to have that proper closure he so desperately needed. And I personally love that they didn't speak to each other; their bond was so strong they didn't need words. You know exact what they WOULD say should they have conversed. Side note I really love the detail that Yugi's monster is what allowed Atem to special summon Mahad. A lot of people (myself included initially) think the Pharaoh just SUMMONED him from sheer will but that's not what happened at all. It is really reminiscent of how Yugi's final draw in his duel against Pegasus allowed Atem to bring forth the Magician of Black Chaos. It's quite iconic, and quite fitting. That these two are able to work in such tandem, that even when separated, they are as one. Also also I absolutely adore that Atem did not even dare let Yugi hit the floor as he collapsed. Love that protective energy. It never left. And it makes sense it wouldn't; that type of love for someone (however you want to perceive that love to be) doesn't just go away when death occurs.
honestly when you remember that in egyptian mythology pharaohs are essentially demigod, i find it reasonable that Atem, under certain situations, can perform what is more or less a divine intervention, after all the series proved that gods that the egyptian god cards were based on very much do exist, and what keeps it from being a cop out to me is he only does it the once, he does not do it causally, he does it in a time of great peril to save his closest friend, as yugioh was more than a mere host for his spirit, he was his friend, arguably his closest
technically, mahad can summon himself to the field just by being drawn, so it didnt need clear kuriboh to do that. but yugi/atem still needed the draw power of clear kuriboh, so yes the parallel is still there and is quite a nice touch.
Also keep in mind, in the series, Yugi has just as much skill and talent for dueling as Atem does(well, Yugi has a bit more as confirmed by the pharaoh himself)but Yugi always had really low confidence that held him back from his full potential, he would always second guess himself.
Well the Millennium Puzzle has the lucky draw thing to force specific cards to the top of the deck. I don't think Yugi ever learned that power, it's a Pharaoh thing.
Joey would most likely have been running the newer support like - Black Stone of Legend - Black Metal Dragon - Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon - Red-Eyes Black Meteor Dragon - Meteor Dragon Red-Eyes Impact - Red-Eyes Fusion - Red-Eyes Insight - Red-Eyes Spirit - Return of the Red-Eyes - Red-Eyes Fang With Chain - Archfiend Black Skull Dragon - Meteor Black Comet Dragon Since he is most likely tag teaming with Yugi, throw a Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon in there for Yu-Jo. If his deck doesn’t lean super heavily into being a pure Red-Eyes deck but includes more warriors like Flame Swordsman, Landstar, Gilford and Gearfried, including Red-Eyes Slash Dragon in his deck would be very likely.
@@Zong_Chenghe is definitely keeping his card that requires three tributes because it was badass also I kinda wanted him to keep his dragon for the true gearfree
So we have two characters I want to introduce: Aigami and Tea Gardner. One of them is the final villain we have ever seen for the original series and he has some of the most broken cards ever and has a grand goal. The other is not really a duelist and wants to be a dancer, and is there to cheer her friends on. Now one of these has a 3 W 0 L win ratio, the other has 0 W 3 L win ratio. Can you guess which is which?
@@Snipergod1024 Yeah Mai threw her duel against Tea, she got outside help from Yugi because of his Dark Magician and in her first ever duel, she beat Joey when they were both noobs
I absolutely love how all of little Yugi's wins have been done through very precise combo strategies. I think it really shows the difference between himself and people like Atem and Kaiba. And to a degree it even sets him apart from other protagonists aside from maybe Yusei or Yusaku.
Just makes me love Yugi's deck even more. I love Silent Magician and the whole growth mechanic. Really shows Yugi's path as a kid getting older, wiser, and far stronger. But he can still play with toys like the lego gadgets too. The psychology behind Yugioh characters' decks fascinates me to no end.
@@riluna3695 for kazuki i think he always imagined yugi to be himself without the tiring effects of his life meaning a kid who no matter how old will always love games
I love the pharaoh scene in this movie so much. Shows up, draws one card, Egypt themed light show plays, villain defeated. It's like boiling down every thing about the show and movies into one glorious moment.
The scene itself is glorius but kinda go against everything that the finale of the original series and this own movie tried to tell The whole message of letting the past in the past Yugi becoming the True king of games surpassing atem And the whole moral point of kaiba of Being obssessed with the past and this is what stops him from greatness is throw away for a (i admit that it was awesome and glorius but...) a big plot hole of how t.f. atem appearend again
That exact scene ruined it for me. Aigami had game, he deserved the win, but no, plot had to plot and Atem had to come out of nowhere and hand Yugi the win.
@@joaoarap4573 I see it as Atem showing up to take care of Zorc/The Milennium Ring. It makes sense since Zorc should be gone, but still persists just to spread misery like a bad dream. So Atem showing up to get rid of him once and for all, so the world can truly move on is fitting
@@lordgrub12345 Nope, if anything, that is a criticism I give to the entirety of DM. It always hands Yugi/Atem/Kaiba victories with the most BS of reasons.
Had Marik not taken over Lumis then Yugi would have lost, at least. He only had 500 life points left which would have been reduced to 0 by the effect of Mask of Dispel at the start of his next turn.
Fun fact this is actually the 49th duel analysis video Sam's made and the SEVENTH duel involving Yugi and Kaiba against or dueling with each other. The first was DSOD, Pyramid of Light, Battle City, Dartz, Noah, and their 4 way with Marik and Joey. Which means Yugi and Kaiba when together make up around 14% of this series so far
I think the main purpose of the Dimension Summoning was to give Yugi and Kaiba (especially Kaiba) a convenient way to summon their stronger Monsters without tributing, thus rendering the duels much faster.
@@nicholasberto575 Yes, "Dimension Duels" are honestly just a reskin of the original "format" of the Dark Games and their function. One thing I like; the Obelisk hits the field, it is NOT a dimension summon. Like it says in the video, Obelisk forces himself onto the board with his own power. The Gods will aid the Pharoah in his time of need. Kaiba, being a reincarnation of Priest Seto is by technicality also "the" Pharoah because Priest Seto became Pharaoh after Atem.
correction, In the first dual Oblisk can be summoned not because hes an Egyptian god but because the card text effect of the Egyptian gods Requiring Tributes Overwriting the dimension summoning rules (Requires 3 Tributes to Normal Summon in card text overwriting Game Mechanics) so even though he can't normal Tribute that line of text effectively bypasses the Board Lock
My friend pointed out that in Yugi vs Aigami Yugi is absolutely RUTHLESS. He strung Aigami along the first few turns and corned him into defeating himself.
Obelisk was probably having a nice lil 5000+ year old nap, came out of retirement for the marik arc, went back to sleep, got bitch slapped by kaiba only to almost win another children's cardgame 😂😂😂
in 13:34 , if you're watching the japanese dub, that moment becomes more epic it's also playing a different theme in the background (remix of god's anger from DM)
I always thought it wasn't just Kaiba being in the tomb that let him summon obelisk. It was Atem who gave him the card in that moment. Because the Egyptian Gods are all Pharaoh's servants. And Kaiba says "Yugi" before summoning Obelisk, noticing it was him doing it. Later on Atem also helps Joey, and of course, directly intervenes finally with Yugi. I know some people don't like that, and I understand their reasoning, but I personally love that Atem is still watching over his friends. Even Kaiba.
I mean, if you pay attention to the final duel where Atem steps in to finish it. He arrives similarly to how the Egyptian God Cards do when they're summoned. He had ascended basically. He was of the divine by that point.
Yugi Moto (not Yami Yugi) is one my favorite duelist in any YGO series. That reactive playstyle, where he waits for his opponent to commit past a point of no return before dismantling their plays with a well thought-out plan, is very reminiscent of how an actual competitive player holds their interruptions. It's more noticeable in his duels against Yami and Kaiba, but even here, you can see him baiting his opponent into bad attacks and turn the tables on them the instant they get blinded by a potential game shot.
I honestly really like the obelisk play in the first duel. Yes, drawing it was shenanigans, but so were many things in yugioh in general, like drawing the legendary dragons in season 4. And if you accept that obelisk has his "unaffected by everything " protection, then i think its neat, that it can bypass the dimension duel summoning restriction, because its three monster summoning requirement isnt inherent to it being a high level monster, but instead is something like a cost printed on the card itself.
It's funny, back in the early 2000s (Battle City Arc) when I was a kid, me and my friends didn't have a total grasp on the Yugioh card rules so we made up our own regarding life points and followed card effects for the Egyptain God cards from the anime. We didn't realize that life point lost between monsters was done through subtracting the difference. Instead if your monster was destroyed, you would lose life points equal to the current attack of the destroyed monster. Same thing for defense monsters. I guess we were dueling with "Dimension Damage", before it became a thing.
In case anyone might be confused. Cubic counter does not reduce the monster's ATK to zero. That effect is exclusive to Cubic Rebirth. This is why Krystal Dragon still had 2500ATK
There is a narrative purpose to the spirit mechanic in Dimension Duel. Both Kaiba and Yugi always sets their monster to the highest stat, showing that they have great willpower. However, Aigami relies on monster with zero ATK (thus does not need willpower to power them up) that are then buffed with card effect, implying a dueling style with a very weak willpower (since powering up by card effect does not require willpower). For all of Aigami's talk about how superior Prana are and how their consciouness are 7 times greater than the average person, he resorts to cheat out his monster's power, while Yugi and Kaiba powers them up with their own strength. A telling scene is this sort-of throwaway line by Aigami when Yugi summons Gaia Lord: "You set its stats to max again?". This implies that setting max stat is actually difficult, and might even be common to see an average dimension duelist rarely able to get their monster's stat to max.
Pretty sure that scene is more so Aigami being dumbfounded that Yugi would choose to increase his monster’s attack to the max as he knows that if Lord Gaia is destroy, Yugi would lose. However, that isn’t to say there isn’t any meaning to it as it could also be indicative of Yugi’s willingness to fight to the very end as when put on the edge, he’ll choose to fight as opposed to self preservation. Contrast this to Aigami where his cubic monsters let themselves return to the hand and field and so you can see he fights for self preservation which correlates to his backstory where he aims to take those chosen by the plana to a new world while also ridding the world from Bakura under belief that he’s still being under the influence of the ring/believing that Bakura was evil.
In the original Japanese version of the movie, Aigami's commentary about Obelisk is that it should only be in service to the Pharoah and could only be summoned by his will. The latter part being said as it zooms in on Kaiba's eyes upon Obelisk. Basically, it implies that Atem was giving his blessings to Kaiba here, and he is possibly interpreting it as Atem wanting him to succeed not only in this duel but to achieve his plan.
13:03 Also the fact that Kaiba HIMSELF just so happens to be the reincarnation OF a pharaoh, and Atem's cousin/SUCCESSOR for that matter XD I feel like not enough people recognize that fun detail :D
Aigami rolls up and is like we’re playing by my super special rules that help me more than they help you and Kaya and Yugi are like all right and then kick his ass lol
I can't imagine how much trouble Kaiba would've been in if his duel with Aigami was a normal duel instead of a dimension duel. His best move first turn would've been summoning or setting Lord of D. and passing, while Aigami could've done his normal turn(s) as if nothing is different.
Sam you clever man, you were trying to release this close to the airing date of the DSOD movie in Japan. Great touch and even greater video! I know these can be tough to make, but I think a good one to make down the line would be Team 5ds vs Team Taiyo. It is a very long duel, but it's got real spirit and it's pretty straight forward. Plus, it's got one of the best uses of the rules at the end of the duel that I've seen in any yugioh series
About the Obelisk summoning. I understood that his effect overrides the dimension summoning requirement. As in, even in a Dimension Duel, Obelisk still requires 3 Tributes to Normal Summon; which his opponent gladly put onto his field.
The Deus Ex Machina moments in this movie were great and fitting. Throughout the series and especially in the manga, Kaiba is just built different. When I saw him summon obelisk in this movie, I was so hype and had no problem accepting it narratively. Same goes for Yugi and Atem.
Three things i liked absolutely, about the movie: 1-Superb animations and incredible voice acting in the japanese dub (i got chills when deep eyes and Crimson Nova trinity were summoned with their chants, literally goes to show you the emphasis difference with other dubs) 2-Kaiba is not a rival..he is THE rival. Not many would commit to sacrifice something for their nemesis, especially those with a big ego like him. 3-Kaiba finally acknowledge Yugi as a worthy opponent, because during their duel, before the final attack he smiled..and it was imo,a smile of satisfaction, for both a great duel and a grandiose opponent. Im literally impatient to see the new movie and i hope it surpasses darkside and the expectations of something even greater 😊
Kaiba pulling Obelisk from the depths of the Earth has got to be one of my all time favourite Yu-Gi-Oh! moments. So glad this movie exists after… the other ones.
Must be really cool to actually see thier hands sometimes instead of running the duel back to back and theorizing what they drew and set depending on Thier play
As a note, it's probably Unification of the Cubic lords was never the mysterious card, but instead it could be Cubic Defense, since before the Dark Cubic stuff appeared, he had no fusion monster from what we see In the last duel where he has Unification, I think the mysterious card is probably Cubic Karma, since he has no vijam on hand it cannot be used, and the card he draws is probably Indiora Death Volt For Kaiba in the last duel, I think those 4 mysterious cards are: 3 Blue Eyes White Dragon 1 Lord of D Probably saved them just in case he can draw a fusion card
In truth, Yugi's duel with Aigami should have been proof enough of Yugi being a better duelist than Seto Kaiba. Seto saw that duel, and unlike Seto, who had the biggest bs draw in the history of the Yugioh anime in order to have a chance at defeating Aigami, Yugi had a more legitimate win without even needing an Egyptian god. Also, Atem definitely was essential in defeating the Zorc corrupted Aigami in the final duel. It was also poetic for Atem to summon a new Mahad card to seal the deal.
I mean Yugi was fading and the entire situation hinged on Atem drawing the literal exact card he needed to win the duel, which is what Destiny Draw is for
Coolest thing about Kaiba playing Obelisk is the cards literally don't exist in the world anymore so Kaiba manifested Obelisk through sheer willpower and my personal headcanon the Pharaoh essentially sending him backup
I always thought that Kaibas new duel disk drawing method allowed him to draw cards basically from anywhere as long as he was actively thinking and wanting to draw a card more so as a way for people who say have lost that hand and dont have a cybernetic one then as you said drawing Obelisk was just because of the location still and always will be a badass scene
i summon an absurd amount of monsters in one turn, synchro summon 3 times in said turn and have 3 cards face down... your move (don't mind me, having duel links flashbacks)
If you have to rely on a gimmicky added on summoning mechanic to emphasize your “skills” in dueling, that means you suck at playing in general DIVA. Right up there with the stupid Deck Master System in the Virtual World Arc…
Some ideas for what the unused cards in the final duel might have been, based on the DSOD decks: Yugi, 1 card: Maybe something DM-related like Knives or Magical Dimension or another spell he couldn't use like Poly. Kaiba, 4 cards: a spell or 2 he couldn't use like Poly or Flute of Summoning Dragon. Maybe also a weaker monster or 2 like Saggi and Assault Wyvern. These cards or their archetypes were used in the movie and wouldn't have helped much in the final duel. I excluded traps as we normally see the characters setting those when possible.
