I think it’s thrashier than the 9”’s material, even the black album. This and hardwired sit somewhere between Justice and black for me. Not as progressive as justice, but thrashier and less radio than black.

One thing I've noticed about Metallica on the last two records is they have a serious problem moving from the tonic and building a chord progression. Too Far Gone is actually the only example on the new record where the chorus has a discernible progression of chords. It's quite hard to create catchy or impactful vocal melodies when your chords are static. If you go back and listen to basically any other era of the band, they never struggled writing a chord progression, but something has gone a bit strange in this era. Still, I think this album is much better than Hardwired. The second half of this record is really exciting stuff, and some of James' vocal parts were really moving actually. His voice is definitely getting stronger with age, and that's impressive. All in, I'm pretty happy with this record.

Only negatives for me on the entire album are: Kirk has some great solos, some songs needed more thought on the solo Sleepwalk my Life Away needs to lean on the bass intro more and get a new main riff Chasing Light needs to lose the 30 seconds after the vocal intro, straight into the main riff which kicks ass If Darkness had a son was performed better on Jimmy Kimmel and should have been the version, 5 minutes is great for it

Room of mirrors and Too far gone? are classics already. I learned this album sounds better on speakers, try it out if you have some good speakers. Best record since black album and I think I mean it. By the way Too far gone is proper black album. James vocals on this album are great, like actually great, I think his efforts to sober up have restored some of his energy.

Finally a 72 Seasons review I agree with 😎. Sure, it's not at the level of their 80s album, but it's still a great album with great variety and, for me personally, it's definitely better than Hardwired and even Death Magnetic. I've read several comments saying that this album is like a mix of Hardwired and the Lord albums and I'm like "how!?". This album, like you say, it's definitely faster overall than Hardwired, and even the slower tracks are not that bad. Something else is that, while the album does have a pretty similar sound to Hardwired, I did feel an evolution. In Moth into The Flame we saw James singing in a more melodic style that sounded quite different to previous albums, and here he expands a lot on that kind of more melodic vocal lines, which I really liked.

Well, it turned out better than I expected based on the singles. But it doesn't come close to Hardwired. Yes, some songs on Hardwired are too long, the solos are not great, but the songs have themes. You read the song titles, listen to the lyrics and it all makes sense. There is an atmosphere to each track, so you can actually tell them apart. Plus some cool clean intros, some very memorable riffs and vocal lines. 72 seasons is basically a Wanna-Be-Hardwired, but it lacks most of the points I mentioned.
@AustinOgonoski

I don’t agree personally, there are songs on this record which need some retooling (Sleepwalk, If Darkness, Chasing Light) but still have very memorable and amazing moments Hardwired could lose 3 songs completely and be much better (ManUNkind, Murder One, Here Comes Revenge)
@tylerlansky1186
@tylerlansky1186 Год назад
@@AustinOgonoski Yeah, the comparison with Beyond Magnetic is spot on. I can't shake off the feeling on some of the tracks that I'm listening to some demo/not-final-release-version. Like Too Far Gone would have been an awesome track if only they made a chorus longer (the speedup part) for people to single along. Or the title 72 season track, catchy verse and chorus, but then they've put unnecessary chromatic half-break-half-bridge in between that completely ruins the pace of the song.
@tylerlansky1186
@tylerlansky1186 Год назад
@@charlesbaker7505 Well I guess it's a question of personal taste as always in music. I do like all 3 tracks from Hardwired that you mentioned. One of the reasons for that is that they have very memorable riffs. Like manunkind main riff with that cool swing, or murder one riff with a chromatic hammering bit. There are almost no riffs like that on 72 season (there are some, but definitely not on every track)

Upon hearing the full album, If Darkness Had a Son became much better to me. And found bangers in Shadows Follow, Too Far Gone? and Inamorata. The rest is pretty ok, “You Must Burn” stands a little more. If I had to give it a mark, 4 out of 5. I’m disappointed. That really sums up my experience. And, for me, this is perhaps the first time I’ve felt this way with a new Metallica album. For context, I got into Metallica in the late 90’s, but ReLoad was already out, so my first new album experience was St. Anger. And, believe it or not, I wasn’t disappointed with it. Everything everyone says about St Anger is true-I can’t deny any of it, but I still like it, and today, in hindsight, it almost has a “cult” status. It’s from an era when Metallica was still keeping up with the trends, and it’s essentially their version of NuMetal. Just like how Load/ReLoad is their version of 90’s grunge/alternative hard rock. When Death Magnetic arrived, again, I wasn’t disappointed. This was classic 80’s style Metallica, which we craved at the time. Then Hardwired. Again, I wasn’t disappointed, at least not at the time. It sounded better than DM in many ways, and has some bangers. I had some criticisms of each album, but perhaps I had more criticism with Hardwired than the others. It was too long-many of the songs could’ve been shaved off a bit, and some songs cut entirely. But whatever, I still really liked it. Now, with 72 Seasons, I find myself making excuses for them. “Oh this riff is pretty good” or “this sequence is fresh”, but overall, I’m disappointed. It’s fine, but I just wanted better than “fine”. Really, this album is like Hardwired’s ReLoad. It’s basically the same style of album in many ways: all heavy, few slower parts, almost no clean guitar tones, no ballads, and the solos are phoned in more often than not. Like, sure, Kirk is defending them, but sorry Kirk, I expected more. And don’t get me wrong: I am not badmouthing ReLoad here… I LIKE RELOAD-and Load. But, if you didn’t like Load, then you probably didn’t like ReLoad either. Well, if you didn’t like Hardwired, then you probably don’t like 72 seasons, cuz it’s VERY similar. The difference is, we didn’t have to wait 7 years to get reload… it showed up 1 year later, and was basically part 2 to Load. And regardless of what you thought of Load/reload, you can’t argue that at least it was different. And furthermore, the songs sounded different from each other… Fuel is a very different sounding song than Low Man’s Lyric. There’s variety. 72 isn’t different. It’s the same. And all the songs sound the same. And they’re all a little too long. So yea…. I’m a bit disappointed. And it sucks, because, for me, this is the first time MetallicA has disappointed me. Thanks for reading.
@ChristopherFoxglove

Let me be clear: I don’t dislike Hardwired, I just didn’t want more of it. I also don’t HATE 72 seasons. It’s not terrible, by any means, and some of these songs may very well grow on me. I just wish Metallica would try something new. These guys are gettin’ old, and I’m older too, and I would be perfectly ok if they slowed down a bit. Or, at least, try some experimentation. I liked that acoustic rendering of Blackened they did recently… how bout more stuff along those lines? Give me a whole album that sounds kinda like the middle section of Inamorata….
