Yes. As you said he was the #2 pick had be been chosen 13-20 no problem. But a #2 Overall Draft Pick should matriculate to become more than a rotation guy.
Brother Aaron.. it's the reason why certain franchises, may never win a title, during our lifetimes. Or at least not before we're in senior citizens homes. You passed up on D-Will and CP3, when you already had multiple forwards, that do the same things Marvin did, but at an NBA level. Biggest head scratcher, of alltime gang.
Atlanta should've drafted Chris Paul he was tailor made for that team.. But it was apparent that either Marvin or Bogut would go#1. Marvin with the Hornets giving them 14ppg would've been solid.
With him, he happened to be one of those "potential" draft picks that didn't even have much PT in college. I wasn't sure at the time he would even do as well as he did in the NBA. Hell, he performed much better than his Carolina teammates in the league. No bust, but okay career.
He was a bust based on his draft position and the players he was drafted ahead of... however when you really look at it.. he wasn't.. I never thought he was as talented as his selection would've suggested.. 15 years and a double digit career scoring average.. he had a solid career
Marvin Williams is a bust. I feel bad for the guy. In all honestly, I believe that he was a poor decision that was made by the organization. Marvin Williams should have never been drafted that high. Yes. Marvin Williams had played 15 season in the NBA, but unfortunately he still falls in the bust category.
Far from a bust…. I seen this guy when he was in high school in the ADIDAS BIGTIME score 36 against the Atlanta Celtics…. Who had a front court Randolph Morris Josh Smith and Dwight Howard Marvin Williams was a player
It was a sum of their parts kind of thing. Not that they didn’t have talent, but playing with a bunch of other talented guys and a great coach in Roy Williams also made them look better.
Marvin was a solid player but going back to UNC for another year as primary option with Tyler Hansbrough would have better prepared him for the league. That being said, imagine if the Hawks took Chris Paul instead of him.
15 year career and you weren't even a starter in college? Success! Not his fault he was overvalued at #2. I thought he had a good career. Not great but good
He was straight but he was one them players drafted for pure potential it's was a popular thing in the 2000s I remember tyrus Thomas was the same way along with a few others
Another thing I always say about super athletes busting is "Athleticism doesn't mean shit if you don't have the IQ to put it together." And that's what happened to Darius Miles and Tyrus Thomas as well.
I never thought williams was a transformative franchise player. I felt he'd be a defensive/role player. His athleticism was insane but to me- he lacked a nba IQ, awareness off the ball, and hunger
No hes just tall ive been to the same gym he was at 100 of times hes trash im not even joking he sucks really bad thats why the guy that made the video had to talk about everyone else but the person he did the video on
You know, I always played Marvin Williams as a scorer aside from Joe Johnson while I played NBA Live during the 2000's. I know he has capability to be a star, but never materialized. Yet, I don't think he's a bust since he last long as a stretch 4 in the league than I expected.
He’s kinda like what Otto Porter is, top 3 pick expected to be a star but didn’t really live up to it but definitely wasn’t a scrub and could hold his own
Marvin Williams was a good role player, but not worthy of being a top 3 ever. His draft stock was overblown in lieu of his college season from UNC, much like JJ Redick a year later. Scouts were comparing him to prime Grant Hill, despite UNC's competition watered down af outside of Florida and his yet his numbers were still being meh. Not sure what those scouts were smoking, but there have been worse though, such as a year later when Adam Morrison was compared to Larry Bird
3 and D guy. Just like Crowder and a bunch of others. They’re role is vital. I think these drafts picks are always overhyped especially the latest one, Cunningham.
I’m going to do a commentary on stunned growth if JC doesn’t go to the league, I mean ESPN. His reporting is is consistent, never to high or to low. Having played with many of his people he speak about. More times than not hes spot on.
Atlanta should've drafted based on team needs clearly. They needed a PG. Joe Johnson was a good player but he wasn't a natural point guard. They probably would've been in playoff contention sooner of they took Chris Paul or Deron Williams.
In today's game, Williams could've done pretty well. He could fit in seamlessly as a starting 4, and develop into a multi-position defender. Interesting point about him leaving too early, let him start after May left and have him develop his post moves and ball handling. But at the end of the day, it's always going to be about who the Hawks didn't pick, when they had a huge gaping hole at point guard and Paul and Deron Williams were available. Since the Hawks drafted 4 or 5 forwards in a row, they had no reason to pick him and put him in a logjam. If you want to meme Matt Millen for drafting wide receivers, you can meme Billy Knight for drafting forwards.
The Hawks GM at the time should've been fired after the draft. They were comfortable with 2 washouts at point over 2 future All-Stars and it cost them badly
What makes him a bust was the fact he drafted ahead of Chris Paul and Deron Williams when the Hawks needed a point guard. Had he been drafted between 15 to 30, he would've never faced the massive pressure to produce as an NBA player.
Is it too early to do one on RJ Barrett? Is he good sure, but RJ was considered with Ja and Zion to be a franchise players you couldn't go wrong in what guy you draft.
I never thought he was that good him leaving early was a blessing of some sort but 15 years in the league can't be that bad beats working in a warehouse
He's a bust for not living up to his draft position (and being drafted ahead of Chris Paul), and he's not a bust at the same time because he managed to last 15 damn years in the league and still prove that he's a great roleplayer
@@terryindachat7296 damn…at such a high pick I would’ve thought that a team would draft a player who had the potential to turn a franchise around like Chris Paul smh
He is a bust if you figure he could make your team into a winner ATL. They really didn't draft a PG when they had Joe Johnson 6'7, Josh Childress 6'8, and Josh Smith 6'9 all on the roster guys that played the positions between the 3 SG, SF, PF.
Marvin Williams was a solid player who unfortunately played for mediocre teams during the Lebron/Golden State era where only a handful of teams were competitive. Retiring in your late 30's after a 15 years of work, with $110 Million in career earnings and a guaranteed pension of $200,000 a year for life, is the definition of successful. No way he could have lasted that long and been a bust.
Solid career, but he was a bust. I feel like I’m most situations, top 3 guys are eventually supposed to be best players on the team eventually. I say most because there are situations like Wiseman with the Warriors where they’re never gonna be that because you have all-time grays in their primes on the team. There’s an alternate universe where the Hawks took Cp3 and let him conduct that team, playing off of Joe’s iso’s, letting Childress and Joe run off screens, PnR with Jsmoove and Harrington, all the while playing all-defensive team-level defense….. it could’ve been beautiful. (Also that next they picked Sheldon Williams[at least he got to marry Candace Parker]. Passing up on Brandon Roy, Rondo, and Kyle Lowry)
I tried to tell people that Roy Williams was alot better coach than people gave him credit for. Not sure, but I don't think UNC had even 1 all star from any of those championship teams.
Most definitely the Hawks would've been much better if they drafted CP3 #2 instead of Marvin Williams. Who knows maybe CP3 could've taken them to at least 1 NBA finals trip. 🤔👀🏀
Jawad Williams was a solid college player and had 3 more years of experience, but Marvin Williams was supposed to be immensely more talented and yet he still couldn’t win the starting job. I never felt like he had that dog in him.
They drafted him cause they wanted to be a big team and switch everything on defense, all the core players 6”8 and taller, iso Joe at point. But damn CP3 and DWill still on the board at a position you need? All time blunder by the hawks.
I'm unsure if he was a bust, I think it was unexpected to be chosen at no. 2 overall, was a North Caroline 6th men. I think he could have had an extra 2-3 years of 15+ pts, he did well to change his style and I'm sure he was a good locker room guy, was lucky to hear him speak about basketball and sounded really smart and well educated
Being from Atlanta…. This draft pick and and the Sheldon Williams pick made me almost HATE the Draft. Knowing they needed a Point and AC Law was not gonna cut it💯
Soft bust IMO... I would group him with the likes of Bogut, Rubio and Battier sure they didn't live up to their draft position but they're a solid piece for any contending team
I love love iso Joe & Melo but u think of those two 1st & not kobe or KD/Melo or tmac or ai ? & those 3 Lbj,Melo, dwade showed this gen moves but they got them from some1 but yes they influenced this past gen.& as u said players looked up to this past gen we’re drafted in the early 00s & same time u say that, it shows harden & kyrie yes they influenced this past gen but they were drafted late 00s .. but salute
I'm sure his Financial Advisor/Planner doesn't think he was a bust. Guy was never a franchise player but he still had a nice long career, nothing to be embarrassed about. I would have thought his stats would have been better but he wasn't a bust, IMO.
He’s one of those rare “is he a bust” type dudes. By that I mean: He played 15 years, a lot of those years as a solid starter/contributor…but also never lived up to his draft status. Regardless of which side you choose, itself almost like you have to pause and think for a minute lol.
I respectfully disagree you can’t tell a guy to go back to school. When he got drafted at 3 and made more money than he would have the following year. Also he spent 15 years in the league. Otherwise I agree on your view just not telling him he should have stayed in school
This guy stayed in the league for 15 years, averaging 10pts 5 rebs (From the bench!!!) and you call him a bust? You a joke B. And I'm a Duke fan that hates UNC but I respect Marv.
