Why The First AD! DONYELL MARSHALL Is Considered an NBA BUST! Stunted Growth

Was Donyell Marshall the first AD? He and Anthony Davis played a similar game, and are usually critiqued for being "too soft". He was before his time growing up in Reading Pennsylvania, and had he come up in an era like today, his game would fit perfectly.
Donyell Marshall was a 6’9 power forward/ small forward that became a parade all American and McDonalds all American by his senior year. He chose the University of Connecticut to play for Jim Calhoun, who promised he’d play immediately and have the chance to be one of the teams top players. He didn’t start off as the most confident or tough players for uconn, usually pushed around with his slender frame and lack of competitive fire. He’d be called on for last shots and routinely ask his coach if he was sure putting him in that position was the right choice. In just a few years he did develop a more mean streak and began to dominate college basketball on his way to a top 5 pick. Was he the first AD? Why is Donyell Marshall considered a BUST!

That's the problem with players been around 6'10, 6'11 back then not been physical players but target mostly shooting 3s. Brian Cook was another one. And the problem on top of that was they were not specialist 3point shooters like Korver some what.

@Belburg
@Belburg 2 года назад
@Otto Fetting Sorry, this Kenny Williams was a contemporary of Billy's, just a couple notches lower on the list for the class of 1988. Syracuse recruited him, as well as Georgetown, but he signed with the hometown school UNC, early in the 1987-1988 year. Very athletic, 6'9", averaged 31/12 for Elizabeth City Northeastern high school in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. First team All-USA TODAY, Parade Magazine, would have been a great one but didn't graduate with his class and got around a 690 for his SAT, so he had to spend a year in Kansas for JC, made All-American, went to Elizabeth City State, though he didn't play, and turned pro in 1990, playing 4 years for the Indiana Pacers. Was in the same recruiting class as current UNC coach Hubert Davis, was actually the bigger recruit. I know about the Kenny Williams you are talking about, he went to UNC as well, but not the talent that this Kenny Williams was.

I've learned from decades of watching the NBA that these supposed "busts" are not the players fault but more to blame is the team. Situation is usually the deciding factor on whether player will grow and become a star. Thats why we usually see all the same teams in the lottery unsuccessful. Also Donyell had a great career despite being labelled a bust. I wouldnt call him a bust at all. Alot of this is just incorrect.

Donyell was no bust. At all. Bad rookie season playing for a terrible team but was a quality starter for most of his career. Would have fit in really well into the NBA today as a 3 and D forward with an above avergae outside shot who could also protect the rim. Developed as a rebounder later in his career too with Utah.

Johnson was just on the wrong teams. Had he stayed on Phoenix or been on the Nets without Deron he would have won more. Still you can't deny his production.

DOnyell had a lot of skill. He could really, really, really shoot too. I always like his game. He played well with lebron. I wish he could have played with lebron earlier in his career. But, YES, he was soft. He was afraid to take charges fro PGs driving down the lane. Im not kidding. He would get in position, then move a little and fall early because he didnt want the contact. He had great hands, though nd long arms with a hell of a shot. Imagine if he had david west toughness, he could have bene an elite big man
