The way I see it, Solidus was more of an anti-villain. Some people might confuse him as an anti-hero, but an anti-hero is usually selfish, like, he might do the right thing, but only for his own personal gain or interest. Like Kratos in the first 3 God Of War games. He does the right thing, but only out of vengeance, and he sacrifices innocent lives along the way without a care. An anti-villain is more like a bad guy with good intentions. His ultimate goal is a noble one, but his methods of achieving it are questionable, like sacrificing innocent lives for the greater good and whatnot. Solidus is by no means selfish, he wants to free everybody from the patriot's control, but his methods are indeed questionable.
Not all anti-heroes are selfish. A link that explains all aspects of an anti-hero to prove my point. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZpABx1NOIX0.html That being said, I do agree that solidus is more anti villain
Alex Wesker Skull Face, the [lalilulelo] and the Winds of Destruction. They're the only true villains in the Metal Gear series (except Volgin) as far as I know.
Liquid's story is too complicated, so I dunno Armstrong wanted to make people free of government so they could "make their own decisions, fight their own wars" or something like that. Who the fuck is Coldhand Skullface thought that he realised The Boss's will. So he wanted to unite the planet in a very fucked up way, but still.... But Volgin was like "XAXAXAXA, I'M EVIL, I WILL BOMB AMERICA!!!!"
I think he meant Hot Coldman. Skullface is 100% a dick obsessed with his childhood trauma and willing to cause a genocide, the Boss's vision was just an excuse and a way to troll Zero.
I never thought of any character as good or evil. Simply doing what he or she thought, even if manipulate and controlled An example is of the shadow government or their notion or idea of The Patriots. Essentially the game hints at what is meant by Freedom and who controls such ideologies. Even the characters in the game question at some point, who they are, Raidon for example. Snake was the only one, who had a clear understanding of who he is. Maybe Kojima and Co made it this way.
I always hear theories that Solidus was lying about killing Raiden's parents personally, to motivate him to fight harder since he already lost to the Patriots anyway.
@@nicholassulfaro1727 no. The nanomachine or whatever that was mentioned is making a case for AI. In essence, Raidon in this case, needs to figure out who he is and create his own belief system of sorts. Even Snake points this out And not be controlled to simply follow orders. #opinion.
Not even a mention of John Cygan's death? He did a wonderful job voicing Solidus, and he sure as hell won't be forgotten by fans of the series. His acting brought emotion and deep thought to many people, May he rest in peace
Killing Raiden's parents sounds villainous. But, it's unclear if they were enemy combatants. He did spare Raiden, after all, which implies he wouldn't kill children. Then there's the killing of Olga. But in that case she was a traitor siding with the Patriots. Yes, I know. She had no choice, because they took her child. But that wasn't really Solidus's problem. I think George was a true patriot and hardened by war and his own traumatic origin. Not a nice guy, but people shaped by war rarely are. Knowing the Patriots were the actual villains, it's hard to think him as a complete villain.
I believe he wouldn't kill children because he wanted to pass his memes on to them, whereas its much harder to do that with an adult since they have already formed their beliefs and morals. If anything, Solidus is just like Armstrong: To fight for your own freedom, no matter what it takes. You can't necessarily blame the antagonists of MGS for the mess throughout the games since, they are being controlled by the patriots.
Why the hell would enemy combatants have there child with them the more then likely case is Solidus just killed two innocent people just so he could see if he fucked up because of his upbrining or beacuse he was naturally that way
The thing is...Raiden is white. Almost all, if not the majority, of Liberian people are African. So his parents were either immigrants or something similar. So, he probably just killed them for a reason we don't know.
Solidus is the embodiment of "In order to achieve your dreams, you sometimes need to get your hands dirty". Him and Armstrong would had been great friends xD
Not for me because Armstrong have a very extreme version of Liberty where the strongest (with raw power, money...) will shape the world and won't be stopped by laws or social convention for their will be created by them. If you want the law to be on your sides be stronger than them (that how i see it) While Solidus was mostly freedom for all (and armstrong system doesn't guarantee freedom if you don't have the strengh or money to secure it). So both probably won't agree. And fight on the top a Metal Gear.
@@desolatortrooper7196 Metal Gear has this great, fantastic ability to make every character (or damn near) have the exact same goal/motivation, but have just a slight difference in perspective of how to acheive said goal or what said goal actually means, that just about as many characters are the same are also so vastly different that they’ll never truly agree with each other on principle It’s really, really good how much thought went into the idealogical beliefs of the different characters in play within the story
No they wouldn't have. Armstrong is a piece of shit social Darwinist while Solidus wants freedom for ALL. Solidus embodies what America could have and should have been: a country of TRUE freedom. Armstrong just wants the strongest to survive while they destroy the innocent "weak".
@@desolatortrooper7196 How about a match between former president Solidus and Senator Armstrong where they each pilot a Metal Gear, happening in a "what if" timeline where Solidus didn't die?
solidus wanted society to stay the same just without the patriots' control, armstrong wanted to burn down society as a whole and create a world where only the strong willed could live. major difference.
He was a villain, easily, but he made a lot of good points and his heart was in the right place. If he wasn't so crazy with his child soldier stuff and using others as pawns him and Snake would have probably been on the same side (they basically do what Solidus aimed to do years later anyway).
Because Jack is really just Degurechaff after a sex change, and because the song talks about the destruction on the battlefield being something to revel in or something. Or because it looked cool in the intro.
I love how Metal Gear has that kind of absurde bravado that makes everything so memorable and interesting, wich gives it a place in the hearts of thousands of people.
None of the Snakes were ever villains, they were all just antagonists. Solid, working for the Patriots, whether knowingly or not, was simply the antagonist to Venom, Liquid, Big Boss, etc. Even Liquid, the least sympathetic of the lot, was acting in the best interests of the majority, even if it was at the cost of a minority.
@@kittenchopper4646 Kind of? David, a.k.a. Solid Snake, is the main protagonist of half the series, so the first two Metal Gear games, the first Metal Gear Solid game, the opening portion of MGS 2, all of MGS 4, and the 2 hour long prequel to MGS 5. The other half of the series you're playing as someone else.
Was i supose to sing the la-li-lu-le-lo part in my head or? Cause i did . Old mcdonald had a farm La li lu le lo Snake god cuffed up by a thot La li lu le lo Raidens parents sadly killed, and with hatred his heart filled La li lu le *patriots*
He did not actually lol he wouldn’t follow such a close minded racist bigot. He did however say fuck the patriots and want to change America back to the way it was before they took control
In a lighter take on this video's obvious criticism, you could just say La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo yourself instead of just using the same voice clip. It would make the joke at least a little less repetitive, and make more sense within the MGS universe since the phrase "La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo" is spoken naturally.
He is an anti villain. A villain with noble ideals or purposes. Sure, he's a piece of shit sometimes, but he puts liberty above everything else. HE is the actual patriot. Team Solidus all the way.
No, anti-villain is a villain who think who is the hero from is perspective, not a villain with noble purpose. An example is Magneto from X-Men, from the her perspective he is the Jesus Christ of Mutant, but is wrong because he is a radical suprematist.
Honestly that’s what venom snake should have ended up being the third son aka his dad using him which would fit perfectly of how big boss feels about his clones I would have accepted the end of MGS5 TPP so much more with open arms with a blown awesome satisfaction mind if this happened but NOPE we get someone who literally had really no big lore impact of the over all stretched out timeline with really no character because avatar ugh 🤦🏽♂️ yeah no thanks I don’t play games to project myself in it but to be interested and invested into fiction character.
@@thatjrpganimefanplayerjusi8003 Before locations and a lot of other info was revealed during MGSV's build up before release, I was hoping V was actually Solidus in Liberia and maybe some other new events to expand on his backstory.
11:31 It's so annoying how they removed the American flag from this game. You can kind of see how Raiden was supposed to cut down the flag and allow it to cover solidus' body as he died.
Jebediah O'malley Then why did he picked up the gun? showing hes more willing to save his broken little ego than to preserve his nation? why did he killed his own men and citizens? why did he let Love Train go on since it was erasing parts and people of his country? Besides there was nothing to show that there was something wrong with the US to begin with, he wanted to fix a problem that didn't existed at all
Why would he let the alternate Diego take the corpse then and go on about how he didn't want the corpse falling into the hands of a non-american. He also built that bunker beneath Trinity church and told Diego to take it there so he obviously wanted it to help America even if he died. The corpse would also cause things of bad fortune to go away from the USA so it would be making america a better place. He wasn't trying to fix a problem, he was just trying to make America greater. He took that gun because he couldn't be sure if Johnny would believe him.
Solidus was probably the best actual hero Metal Gear had. I killed him only one time for the story, after that I never wanted to kill him again. They should have let players join him or spare him.
You missed 2 opportunities at the end to annoy me more. This was a really good video that i learned a few things from so thank you for that but god damn man just call them The Patriots. It was funny the first couple of times but towards the end of the video i almost left.
Yes hes a villian. The man kidnaps and enslaves children and then makes them fights wars. That's pretty much the worst thing you can do. That's a step right beneath holocaust
I KNEW i heard that shi somewhere before lol; comments need to chill on it, it was turned way down. only prob with this vid is how many times he repeats the group name.
Mostly. The main villains are usually given enough backstory to understand and sympathize with why they're doing what they're doing. Sub-villains unfortunately don't always get the same treatment outside of maybe MGS2, and Skullface doesn't stack up to the rest but I'm willing to excuse that on the grounds of the production of MGSV being a fucking mess. But yeah on the whole you're generally right
Solidus is as much a bad guy as the Boss was, or Big boss, hell even Solid Snake. I think Eli managed to be the closest to an actual bad guy, and we all know that Liquid had his own motivations that cast his actions in a different light.
soldius was a pretty cool character with a very good voice actor. too bad the later games pretty much never mention him or give him any other backstory (although rising does but in a sort of weird way)
oh yeah, im considering playing zone of the enders but i wanna know do i have to play both of the games to get the full story context or is it enough from the second game. i heard the first game was pretty subpar
If you're going to play the port version, I would suggest getting the PS3 HD copy and download the new update for it. The first game is pretty subpar but the game is relatively really short so I recommend you play that first. You don't really have to play the first game but it's very useful to grasp what world ZOE really is and some information that occurred in the first game really build up the moment in the second game. But you don't have to.
I have a soft spot for ZoE but it isn't nearly on the same level as Metal Gear. Kojima is great at what he does and he's my favorite video game man but ZoE's only good if you're into the gameplay - the story is style over substance and I feel like the series died before it really had the chance to blossom like Metal Gear did. (this is coming from a big fan of both games btw)
I agree with most of what you said, hes not a good person, but I do think he's a villain. He worked towards an understandable goal with ruthless methods and no remorse He's a villain imo
I mean... The Boss was "patriotic" more than "heroic". A True Soldier rather than a revolutionary or something of the sort... (Still doesn't change that both of them are great characters in their own right)
