We all know that the magnificent 68-million-year-old T-Rex was one of the most ruthless predators on the Cretaceous block. What you may not know is that this colossal carnivorous beast may have been covered in a luxurious layer of fluffy feathers.

The whole "Don't move it won't see us" line is based on the Jurassic park book where the dinosaurs in said book had frog DNA in them, and frogs are motion based predators. That statement only applies to fictional frog dinosaurs and has no basis on the real world.

I don't understand what people have against feathers on dino! A giant beast with fur can be 10 time more awesome than a generic lezard. Also, it is interresting to see all the possibilities! @Narstak
@Narstak 8 лет назад
+MrMementoOri It is true that not all dinosaurs had their body covered in feathers, but lets compared that to the Elephant and Mammoth case... Very close species, and both have hair, but the Elephant is reduced to having less hairs. T-Rex may have benn covered PARTIALLY in feathers. The thing is: the ancestors of dinosaurs have been discovered to have feathers. So ALL dinosaurs had the POTENTIAL to be FEATHERED. T-Rex may had a not so big coat, but its cousins... that's an other story.

There is a lot of outdated info on the video. They readjusted the weights of the T-rex when they discovered that they had hollow bones, just like birds. This reduced the weight of virtually all dinos and using computer models they found that the animals could move far more quickly than previously thought, including the t-rex. From 7.7 tons to 3-4 and from 17mph to 30-40. Makes sense.

I personally think theropods look more prehiatoric and mich more scary wih features. I think they're much more frightning when I think of them as massive prehistoric birds than overgrown bipedal lizards. They would be faster, smarter, and much more social than the general person thinks of a theropod now. Imagine a T. rex moving around with the swiftness of a bird of prey? God that's menacing. Sure they have some traits of reptiles, birds evolved from reptiles after all, and reptiles from amphibians. Theropods are merely a separate branch and a completely different manifestation of birds than the ones we see today. True monsters.

I'm sure we all know about the Tyrannosaurus specimen known as 'Wyrex' right? Well, that animal alone proves that Tyrannosaurus wasn't 'covered' in feathers. As scaly skin patterns were found, with no feather or hair like structures, in areas of the body where Yutyrannus did have feathers. The ancestors of Rhinos, Elephants ect had fur, but the animals themselves don't. Same logic with Tyrannosaurus and Tarbosaurus. Baby Tyrannosaurs definitely had a coat of downy feathers or protofeathers, but the raw evidence suggests that the adults did not. The feather theory is based on pure speculation based on other animals.

@5raptorboy1
@5raptorboy1 8 лет назад
IndianaJoel93 So what? Skin impressions on feet? That's like saying that chickens must not have feathers because they have the scale things on their legs. T rex didn't need to insulate as much as Yutyrannus, so he didn't have feathers on his legs.
@5raptorboy1
@5raptorboy1 8 лет назад
IndianaJoel93 Sorry, I was a bit misinformed by the internet when I looked it up. Though, feathers are not only for keeping warm. Feathers=/=fur. The same rules do not apply, mostly because feathers can regulate temperature rather than fur which just keeps it in. Fur keeps heat in, feathers can keep it in and keep it out. Other people have explained it better than me. Anyway, just because it didn't have feathers on the legs and tail does not mean that the entire body is featherless. Also, humans and most mammals have hair over their skin. Why can't feathers be over scales? (That last question is almost definitely misinformed, but whatever.)
@IndianaJoel93
@IndianaJoel93 8 лет назад
5raptorboy1 The type of feathers that were found on early Tyrannosaurids were used for warmth though, protofeathers are very different to modern flight feathers. Like I said, Tyrannosaurus most likely didn't have obvious feathers, if anything it'd be like the hair on a Rhino, tiny little filaments that were only visible if you were rubbing your face on its hide.

No dicks this episode? Im not sure if i should be happy or dissapointed xD Im not sure that the Chinese fossil means that the american t-rex has feathers.we have seen time and time again species changing drastically after being separated from the main group of a species. Perhaps the more jungle climate of ancient china didn't allow as much sunlight to pass to the ground to keep the dinasaur warm, so it developed feathers to compinsate, vice versa the more open america allowed more sunlight to hit the ground meaning the t-rex could stay warm without the feathers, so it lost them since it didnt need to expend the energy anymore. Im just saying that as an ecapmle as to why it may have feathers in one area but not the other. I don't know whether china was a jungle back then or not xD Great info yet again, im glad i found this channel. Keep it up! :)

According to www.dinosaurhome.com/did-t.-rex-have-feathers-29792.html, T. rex skin imprints show that adult T. rex didn't have feathers. The hatchlings and juveniles may have had them to regulate their body temperature while they were small and then shed them when they reached adult weight and could regulate their own body temperature.
@ericofyoutube5778
@ericofyoutube5778 6 лет назад
OmegaWolf747 where does it say the adults didnt? Also the process of fossilization is a complicated one , the chinese skin imprint has more detailed record of skin and feather, there isnt any concrete way of determining this since no living t rex is alive now but pretty much all of T.rex's living ancestors have feathers and generally there are evolutionary traits that are carried over thousands if not millions of generations feathers being one of them

Perhaps not feathers in the traditional sense you mean but they might have had feather like fur like all other living raptors today, plus that skin found was of the leg/foot of the trex , if you look at Emu's and ostriches they also dont have feathers on their legs

In fact, the Tyrannosaurus wasn’t covered in feathers. It had scaly elephant-iguana ish skin, even though it may have had feathers or fur in some point of life .And they had foward facing eyes. It had lips too, to protect their teeth. And their nose wasn’t a “nose” Its more like scars on their head.

First of all..... I'm Dutch so my English might be a little bit bad. I hate it when people say "a feathered T.rex looks like a giant turkey or chicken" just to make it sound more stupid. The fact that the T.rex had feathers does not mean that looked like a giant chicken, the T.tex probably had very dark spotted feathers to help it camouflage. Just say: the T.rex probably looked like a giant eagle.

In the books, Michael Crichton makes it a point to state that they are not true dinosaurs, but mismatched genetic creatures. The novels even suggest that the movement thing could come from two different sources, Frog DNA and Dr. Lavigne suggests it just wasn't hungry.

Just a quick correction, from my understanding most paleontologists now believe that most Non-Avian Dinosaurs grew throughout their lives-- not plateauing like most modern animals. It would explain why we keep finding bigger and bigger specimens of similar animals, and titanosaurs for that matter.
@Hito2
@Hito2 9 лет назад
they explained the "don't move" thing in the episodic games, along side the huge size of the Raptors. apparently it was basically coded into the T-rex's genes as a safety precaution. but the Raptors being way over sized was an accident

Short answer: No, they weren't covered in feathers. We know this because many skin casts from various parts of Tyrannosaurus Rex have been found and none of them have shown feathers, so far. If they had them, they were only on very specific parts of the body.
@lasemanamayor9396
@lasemanamayor9396 6 лет назад
They were covered in feathers,the problem is that the only part of the body preserved with skin coverings are the parts that we already knew werent feathered Now this is like saying that an ostrich isnt feathered beacause you found skin coverings belonging to its legs
@varanid9
@varanid9 6 лет назад
Leo Rex Sorry, but you're dead wrong. We have skin casts from various parts of not only Tyrannosaurus, but Albertosaurus and Daspletosaurus as well. We even have skin casts from the SAME PARTS of the body as where Yutyrannus had feathers, and they are scaled, not feathered. This is why paleontologists have now concluded that T-Rex was not feathered. Keep up.
@lasemanamayor9396
@lasemanamayor9396 6 лет назад
varanid9 while what you said is in fact true,that doesnt mean that they not have them
@varanid9
@varanid9 6 лет назад
BTW, the Yutyrannus, the ONLY large dinosaur known to have feathers, lived in a cold environment, where the other known Tyrannosaurs did not.

ok but like... dogs' vision is movement based and they don't run into trees - they just don't register you as a person if you stand perfectly still among trees, hence deer's defence mechanism of standing perfectly still.

I actually have a personal theory that the theropod Dinos were actually giant birds and not reptilian, considering how much there is in common with modern birds such as chickens and emus. Keep in mind, though, that I’m not a professional paleontologist, simply a paleo-enthusiast, so I could be wrong.
