One of the wild things about veggietales is that one of the creators promised his mom that he would never animate Jesus as a vegetable, so most of the bible stories in the show are from the old testament

Well, that should be an easy fix for them: make him a fruit. It's not like Veggie Tales are devoid of fruit, anyways. I mean, cucumbers and tomatoes are both fruit and they're big parts of the show.

@@chaodan3029 Um, I have no idea where you got that interpretation. In biology, fruits are specifically "the seed-bearing structure in flowering plants that is formed from the ovary after flowering" and vegetables aren't a thing. In cooking, fruits are specifically sweet fruits (the sort you might eat on its own) and vegetables are every other part of the plant, including non-sweet fruits like cucumbers, squash, and tomatoes. I do not know of any mainstream context in which an apple would be considered a vegetable.

Yeah I mean if it wasn’t for VeggieTales then the eyebrows would look a bit worse in the animation that doesn’t hold up thattt well already. But seriously, for the time the team did pretty good for what they had.

It wasn't just doing great with what they had. This was cutting edge CGI animation when it came out. If it wasn't the first fully CGI animated series, it was very close. They also knew the limitations: the reason why they chose veggies was that they could give them that plasticky look of early CG (similar to why Pixar chose toys) but without having to animate limbs, which weren't up to snuff yet when you needed to put out multiple videos.

One thing I don't think I appreciated as a kid about the first two Larryboy episides was the whole joke about him was that he wasn't a very effective superhero. It worked as both comedy and a way to emphasize the lessons of the episodes. He does get more capable in the flash animated spin off, but even then he was always closer to Darkwing Duck than Batman in terms of competency.

Most of VeggieTales, surprisingly, didn't suck: 🙂 Despite being the favorite "Poisoning the minds of children!" scapegoat of RU-vid atheists attacking overbearing faith-film commercialism, Veggie went for the more non-denominational general air of moral messages and "trusting in God" rather than treating their audience like Bibleman's video re-education camp. The humor was also watchable funny, to go with the bad 90's CGI, and was a harmless enough video babysitter.

yeah, from my memories Veggie Tales never beat you over the head with it's religious values. It was there but it was mostly just teaching morality and virtue. Christian media has become indoctrination in the past decade or more. Evangelicals are becoming louder and more hateful. But it wasn't that long ago that a lot of Christian media was mostly about being kind to one another.

@@WillMcFarland VeggieTales was unfairly built up as a “rival brand” during the Religious Right’s earlier anti-Disney/Lion King demonization of the early 00’s-Ie. “Why show your kids evil, gay-sex-laden Disney, when you can show them Veggie values? Reason being, Fundie churches pressure parents to keep their kids away from “evil” popular brands like Disney, Harry Potter or Pokémon, that they might pick up from their friends at school, and discover that there’s something a lot more interesting out there, and things aren’t really so bad…Can’t have that.

To answer a question about Veggie representation in Biblical stories, the VeggieTales movie _The Easter Carol_ has a musical section that briefly retells the Passion of Christ with Jesus and all other Biblical characters represented in stained glass windows. Going into it, I was curious to see which vegetable the creative team would cast as Jesus. Maybe, I thought, they would use a unique, one-time veggie cast member like Esther. But instead Jesus was depicted as a human in the stained glass. Some Biblical figures like Moses, Daniel, Joshua, etc. were recast as veggies. But apparently they hold Jesus in a uniquely respected position.

I do really have a special place in my heart, even still, for Veggie Tales, but I think my favorite fact about it was that my mom showed it to me and my siblings before we really knew what lying was, so rather than teaching us lying was bad it merely introduced the idea to us.

This was perfect. Also, I would have to rewatch VeggieTales (which I don’t really wanna do of my own volition but will if Mattie and Scott keep on doing this) but I believe there was an edict that the Veggies themselves couldn’t say they were going to heaven? Please someone correct me if I am wrong or misheard/remember this but it was something about how the creators of the series didn’t want to teach kids that vegetables could potentially go to heaven. This is to say, if Alfred didn’t tell Larry the correct button, Larry would have died and been banished to an endless void for all eternity.

I know the first lie in VeggieTales lore. In the first episode of VeggieTales, "Where's God When I'm S-scared?" Larry plays Daniel from the Bible story of Daniel and the Lion's Den, and King Darius's Wisemen sing a whole song about the lies they are good to tell King Darius to get Daniel thrown out of Babylon.

Ok... You've covered Larry Boy. But have you ever been to Boston in the Fall? Do you love your lips? Do you have hair for your hairbrush? Is your water buffalo fast or slow? These days I'm that "angry atheist." At least that's what the borderline Christian fundamentalist church I grew up in says (let's not get into that though). But Veggies Tales is just that version kind of clean and fun nostalgia for me. Infinitely better than "God's not Dead" or any of that garbage, and it's as quotable as "Emperor's New Groove."

@@Classic-guy1991 Tragically there are about three. I've only been able to stomach the first. But yeah there are two more. As bad as they are to watch for atheists they suck worse for Christians because even though most of us are pretty chill it kinda reminds us how a lot of the world sees us due to the worst outliers.

I absolutely grew up with Veggietales! I had so many of the DVDs and memorised some of the songs 😂 I didn’t watch much of the Larryboy stuff, but I did have the one with the Bad Apple about Temptation, and that one was good

You never heard that there's a flash animated series based on Larryboy. It was short-lived as 3-2-1 Penguins(if you know the tragedy of Darth Big Idea The Wise, then you'll understand this statement). I always think of the villains in the first three episodes as inspiration from Batman/Spider-Man villains(aside from the Animated Series antagonists), The Fib is Clayface, The Rumor Weed is Poison Ivy, and The Bad Apple is Doc Ock. Still, the specials are of high quality, and were teased via Dave and the Giant Pickle. Despite of some parents complaining about The Fib From Outer Space being complete nightmare fuel, Vischer and Nawrocki still set up Larryboy as a more darker and serious VeggieTales, but still having the same humor and charm as the series.
