Tiger Woods 2000 season will likely go down as the most dominant in golf history. That golf swing produced incredible shots all season long and when you look at it, it was actually incredibly simple.
As you can see in this video, by changing the concepts about some "fundamentals" of the golf swing my swing is more closely matching his movements. Far from identical, but we're in the same zip code.
What's interesting is that I'm doing the exact opposite of everything that is commonly thought of in the golf swing today to achieve this!

Totally agree with releasing from the top. I took lessons from a Pro in Parker, CO. This was the first thing he told me to do. I thought he was crazy; you'd cast the club, and loose all your lag. I picked up 15 yd.s with my 8 iron on trackman. On video, I actually had more retention of lag angle then my old swing. Since lessons, I've had my 5 lowest rounds in last 5 years including my lowest round ever by 4 strokes.

It was Mike Austin, the longhitter, who recommended first to throw the club from the top as early and fast as possible.
@Rotaryswing
@Rotaryswing 7 месяцев назад
Yes I have learned a little about his ideas on the swing, biggest different it seems on the surface is he advocated for a big hip turn. I'm no Austin expert by any means so maybe I misinterpreted that but that to me is a tough one for the average golfer to learn to glue together. A lot more moving parts that have to be coordinated. I like simple and as few moving parts as possible and while a big hip turn feels natural to me, I can see my typical 90s shooter taking a long time to incorporate that into their swing compared to what Tiger is doing here which little more than pure lateral movement. Straight lines golfers can understand, lots of rotation and things get confusing quick for some.

Thank you for your answer. I believe, that the Mike Austin swing is a combination of swinging (not consciously turning) the spine and throwing with the hands. Nobody teaches this, but it is very effective. I personally like your method of the right hand throwing move as well.

It’s worth noting that Tiger’s down the line shoulder tilt looks symmetrical from backswing to follow through.

Great video! Look forward to what’s to come. Can’t help but to think this is Tiger from the end of the Butch Harmon era, like circa 2002-2003 🤔. It’s labeled as 2000 on separate RU-vid video which has been out there for years - but he rotates the face slightly more open during his takeaway on other videos - like footage of him from the 2000 US Open and/or British Open. This seems to be a little more closed going back. Just the take of a hacker like myself though 😊 Keep up the great work at Rotary Swing though and look forward to what’s to come in 2024 👍

Ya it’s somewhere in that timeframe before he went to Hank. You can see he is pretty static here which is a hangover of Butch making him stop at the top and then hit from there. Butchs purpose at that time was to get Tiger under control I think and he did an amazing job with that but cost him a little distance. He changed a fair bit each year as he progressed and you can see changes from each season in that time span. I sort of group that entire timeframe together as that era of his swing. Right after this he started getting very laid off as a result of how Butch had him set the club on plane and how Haney started getting him to swing back longer. The two didnt mix well at the beginning and so more changes were needed

@@Rotaryswing fascinating!!! Very cool to learn and hear about this history. Makes a lot of sense, and can certainly see the "Stop at the Top" drill effect here. And then as you mention getting very laid off at the top with Hank Haney. Guess it's a testament to how talented he was to still win, despite his swing going backwards. Makes a lot of sense too, how Chuck has explained it with his back getting hurt with Sean Foley too. Not sure if this is Craig or Chuck, but you guys are awesome. Keep up the great work! And look forward to coming back to Rotary Swing in the near future once an injury heals up.

@@bt2476 it was pretty crazy to see how well he played even so laid off. Really goes to show just how well he moved in the downswing that it didnt really matter much how out of position he was at the top. This is chuck by the way!

@@Rotaryswing gosh was it truly ever! It's incredible to see the side by side differences in the years. Looked extremely different, and like you said laid off at the top, along with so many differences. It's hard to imagine what coaches like Hank Haney would have said to Tiger or sold him on, to convince him to overhaul his swing in such major ways - versus what it was from 2000. Makes one sad to think of just how much more he could have won potentially if he just stayed with what he had, versus continually overhauling. Chuck awesome work on here always! You and your team have really opened my eyes and improved my game tremendously and I'm sure so many others on here with your analysis and teaching. 🤝🍻👍

Chuck, have you watched the interview Tiger and Butch did in 2000 on the golf channel? Tiger talks about this in detail. He says that he tries to pull the arms down while he feels that his hips don't move. Of course his hips to shift and rotate but this feeling of keeping everything shut coming down reminds me of your old belt buckle drill (keeping it shut coming down). Does this move contribute to tiger releasing the club early or throwing the clubhead at the ball? I've personally been working on keeping my shoulders shut coming down while shift to the left and that has drastically improved my releasing the club at the ball at the right time
@Rotaryswing
@Rotaryswing 7 месяцев назад
I have seen that clip. What was interesting to me is how Tiger talked about getting the club more in front of him on the way down. The only way to do that is as you suggested - the body can't run away ahead of the arms and the arms have to work the club back out in front. The idea of keeping the back to the target, the belt buckle drill, keeping the right shoulder back, all of those are dancing around the issue but I don't like the feeling of trying "not" to do something or restricting movement. It's much easier to focus on what you do want to do and by "throwing" from the top, all of these things happen naturally. Just another one of those counter intuitive things in golf - do the opposite of everything you think you should and it's probably right! Tiger has also said on video that he never thinks about his body movement. Ironic since his is the body movement that most every instructor tries to copy!

@@Rotaryswing hey chuck, I've been experimenting with that feeling of throwing the clubhead at the ball without any of my swing thoughts (chest back, right shoulder back etc.) All I can say is wow. I've increased my lag a crazy amount and definitely feels so much faster. And all my check points are met (left butt cheek back of tush line at impact, shoulders square at impact) when I do this natural throwing action. The transition sequence of the lower body in the downswing just happens automatically. The club is little steeper coming down which is actually good for me because my fault is come far from the inside and hit blocks and hooks. And Tiger doesn't look like he is coming too far from the inside either. And I really don't have to feel "coiled up" and tense at the top of the backswing to generate enormous speed at the ball.

Are you working on getting more side bend into impact? Tiger does something interesting with his head coming down: he lowers it as it also drifts a good amount towards his heels. Anyone else notice that?

From what I see with golfers who hit it over 300 like you do, the hands have to start releasing early because your body rotation speed appears to be exceeding the speed of sound! 🙂

This, my friend, is exactly what I'm going to be talking about in my next video! Did Jack throw from the top because he had such a powerful leg drive or did he have such a powerful leg drive because he threw from the top?!?!?! The proverbial chicken or the egg ;-)

Is there any way you can address how he and I see you bow that wrist so much at about hip high in the down swing? I feel and just feel if I start to throw the club from the top with no thought of that wrist starting to bow it is going to be wide open at impact. Just a thought and a feel.
@Rotaryswing
@Rotaryswing 7 месяцев назад
Hey John this happens in a proper throw naturally. This “throw” is not the best word to describe it in regards to what I feel. Im really just widening the angles of my elbow and wrist (lag). A true throw could easily cause you to cup the left wrist and leave the face open. It’s a little hard to describe perfectly in text but this is the next members video I am working on. Think of your arms “falling” to start down and you are widening the angles rather than throwing per se from the top.

@@Rotaryswing I look forward to it. If I look at his swing today it looks even more pronounced. I don't think he does it much at the top of the swing but as he gets down to impact it looks like it is off the chart bowed. I try to do it when practicing and when I see it on video I am not even close. It may be a grip thing. Would like for you to really talk about it in detail. Thanks love your stuff

@Rotaryswing

After spending all this time to understand and experience Tiger's early 2000 swing, a lot of things have become clear to me. The first is that what he was doing then, and technically still the same now as it was when he was a kid, is that the swing is soooo much simpler. The way the parts fit together is so basic it's almost hard to believe that it could be this basic of a movement. Feeling it to the degree that I have so far has made me realize that even I have been working way too hard in my swing for far too long. This is simpler, easier on the body, so basic, that a child figured it out at 5 years old. If I didn't use this experience and knowledge to help my students I'd be negligent.
