It tests you to your limits. After racing Leadville 100 miles, I need to admit my body is not ready for the pounding of 100 miles and 23k feet of elevation gain. But that's what ultrarunners do, they find it in them to push through. Because trail running isn't always easy, but it's always fun!
It is one of my favorite races - a point-to-point course, mostly on trails, across a full mountain range, gaining 23k ft of elevation, and featuring gorgeous views. I knew it’d be harder this year, but I didn’t expect to have to fight tooth and nail to cross the finish line.
By mile 30, pain in my Achilles and knees prevented me from running. But, by miles 40, I was already zombie-walking. I was at the start of an extremely long and challenging night. But, lucky me, Nora came to pace me for the last 50 km - and it helped tremendously. Together, we slowly made our way across some of the most challenging segment of the race.
Once the sun rose, I knew we’d make it. Somehow, we were able to hang on, and by mid-afternoon, we crossed the finish line. I never doubted I could do it, when I crossed that line, I had the sudden realization that I did it - I had achieved to completed both the Leadman and the Grand Slam over the summer.
