Waste Less Energy with Escapes (Focus on Grips and Frame 1st)

I've seen a lot of my White Belts struggle with escaping the modified Kesa Gatame position used in BJJ.
In this video I review a roll that was recorded by one of the viewers.
Our buddy Sean was rolling and got stuck in the Modified Kesa Gatame position and was unable to escape, eventually getting submitted.
So I show a couple of escapes from this Side Control style position and I also include tips to prevent the person from getting into a super strong position in the first place.
One of the biggest problems I see from a lot of newer BJJ practitioners is that they don't settle down and really focus on getting good grips and position for their escapes.
Often I see White Belts and newcomers to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu fidget and flail around expending a lot of energy but never actually setting up their escape.
So make sure that no matter what escape you use. Set your grips and body positioning up 1st before you make an attempt to get away from your opponent.
I also touch on another position from the video.
I hope all of the BJJ escape tips in the video are helpful!
Thanks!

Yes, I've caught myself being "lazy" and just flopping around with the hip bumps instead of having a purpose. One guy in my gym said that those "hip bumps require a lot of energy" so yes make sure you aren't just flopping just to flop, but have a purpose and plan. Such as "grips and frame first" as we learned in this one! Thanks!

Hey Chewy, Sean here, I appreciate you taking the time to watch me flop around, and this will help for sure. You're right that I'm not necessarily getting a proper frame in place before I attempt that bridge and escape Let me talk real quick about about taking this guy's back when he has my head wrapped up - my coach tells me the exact same thing all the time (and frequently yells at my buddy here for exposing himself). I know the back take is there, and I'm confident in executing as you demonstrated against most other opponents, but I just can't shake this guy's head squeeze. It's probably a matter of me not putting enough determination in to freeing my head, but I see classmates and opponents in competition that are his size or larger struggling with this exact same thing...he wants us to unlock our guard and attempt this, because he doubles down on the headlock and pressure, then uses the opportunity to pass. Unfortunately I've gotten wary of this and don't attempt the back take anymore...though the knee shield didn't work out too well for me either if you watched the remainder of that section :p That said, however, hooking with my outside leg, shifting out, and coming up to my knee is not something I've attempted, so I'll def be giving that a try. Thanks again for help.

Sean Gallagher When he is in a position that he normally grabs and headlocks you, that's when you want to tuck your chin, and start making a head lock frame. ie, elbows tight and hands come together (one hand on opposite wrist) to protect yourself neck, head, hands etc. You can usually defend pressure top players by building frames. Ill link a framing JJ video if a find a good one.

Sean Gallagher on taking the back: an additional option is that you can push his bum with your knee in the halfguard when you have the underhook to make him base his hand then you can free your head to take the other knee out and then proceed to take the back.

Chewjitsu Excuse me can you please check out this video called "Kash teacher beats student"its from 2009 and if I did bjj and if it was me I wouldn't let the teacher get the chance to put the kesa gatame on and they were both struggling in the video and the part with them holding hands is a question I want to ask about.

If you're in halfguard and get that underhook and outside foot over their calf, you have so many options to score. Sweeps/reversals, back takes, really anything you want to do with position. It's not a great position to sub from but man if you can get that you can turn the whole match around.

Chewy, another cool option (at 4:37). Instead of throwing your legs up and going for the "power move," there's another (kinda slower) option. You can shift your hips/legs to the left (just pick both feet up and set them down about a foot or even less further to the left), which then slides him a bit further off your right side. Basically, it moves more of his upper torso off you and onto the mat. Then, reach out with your left arm and base to get to an elbow, and then with your right arm, stiff arm him (more to your left and over you) to reverse.
