An oddly satisfying video with the subtle droning sounds of the Lady Kenmore sewing machine as I sew every stitch that she has to offer. This may help you take a nap, it did me.

I just learned just how addicted I am to sewing machines by watching this video start to finish. Very satisfying.

In my opinion, Kenmore 158 series home sewing machines are very much under appreciated. They are smooth, quiet, powerful, and very reliable. I really don't think anyone can do better. I own three of them.

@@AlexanderDyer Almost. The white nylon camstack up top has been known to crack, and cause problems with the stitches skipping. Not sure what Pfaff was thinking when they loaded them into these machines. It seems if the stack was not covered in petroleum grease that it stood a better chance of not failing. The ones I've seen failed are all very yellowed; a sure sign that it had petroleum grease breaking down the plastic at a molecular level. My Kenmore 54, a running mate for Kenmore with this machine has (on some models) a nylon stitch length cam on the knob that cracks and makes stitch length impossible. The Kenmore 16 and 1749, identical machines except for colour and slight cosmetics suffers from the same malaise. The 1749 has its stitch length knob on top instead of the bottom. And...apparently all three models have a brass gear (this was a huge shock) that cracks in two. Not quite sure what Japanese company built these two models (I've heard these are Janome or Juki built machines, but have no proof), but the brass cam gear???? How could a part made of that material fail? So..some, as we are finding out via purchasing what turn out to be lemons, are not as heirloom quality as some of us once thought. Some of the 1970's Kenmores we thought had metal fittings for the handwheel to attach to have turned out to be plastic with an increasingly higher than expected failure rate. That plastic can crack. Fortunately, some have found a fix via a bit of wire tightly wrapped around to close the crack up and secure the fitting. Even the venerable 1914 has a plastic selector gear up top that can crack off. A lot of this is how Sears started cutting corners to bring down costs.

I imagine in the David Lynch Twin Peaks universe there is a sewing equivalent to the log lady who spends the day doing just this. Who afterwards reviews the stitches under magnifying glass while taking diligent notes that detail the tiny variances. Each of which are mysterious clues and messages from the red room. I'm certain one of them, if sewn into a spiral on a plate and spun, could be the key to transcendental self hypnotism.

I have just been offered a Kenmore by a friend who decided she doesn't like sewing. I taught her how how to use it but she just doesn't get it, I can't wait to get my hands on it. I really appreciate your videos :)

These are SUCH good machines. The stitch selector on mine is a little stiff, but eventually I'll have the gumption to adjust that out. So glad I have it.

Get some sewing machine oil, take the top off and give it a thorough lubrication and exercise and it should work out of it.

@@AlexanderDyer That's what I did to move it from 'locked up solid' to 'a little stiff.'

I thought that was a classic car when I saw the RU-vid picture. What a beauty. Love the bed and motor placement. It makes me want to find one. Does it have cams? Is it pink?
@AlexanderDyer
@AlexanderDyer 11 месяцев назад
The sewing machines from this era had great design. This one is from the late 50's. There is a stack of cams that are integral to the machine and the selector is how you choose the different cams. It is not pink, I just have some colored lights in the studio, it is more a copper and cream color. Here it is in a different light and you can see those cams too. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IqVxuxuV--g.html

No. This one was in very good condition. Clean and oil, and a new bobbin winder tire and it was ready to go.
