Nothing, really. I like them to stay fully wet for at least a day. I use solvent-free gel, which can speed up the drying to a few days from a full week or more without. Liquin or Galkyd medium will speed up drying a bit. Cobalt drier is another additive that speeds drying.

That was walnut oil to get the surface a little wet. The grey is just the acrylic primer which was already dry.

Oh, ok thanks. When it got darker I thought you had put on a grey wash, but it got darker because of the wet walnut oil. Makes sense. Thanks.

Interesting, is that a technique just you do or is it something you learned from somewhere?

I always liked the feel of painting on a dry painting that's been "oiled out," so I use it on my dry acrylic primer. You can see I wipe most of it away, so there hasn't been any issue of bonding or cracking. I think I saw Buck Paulson do this on an acrylic underpainting before adding oils, so I figured it would work on a blank canvas as well.

That's cool. I might try that at some point.
