Hi. I cringed at that, too. I'm an American. While we may have excellent hospitals, physicians, and medical advances, clearly there are other countries that offer this too. What we don't have is affordable healthcare. What we don't have is affordable medical insurance. I worked in state government for over a decade and saw firsthand how this adversely affected the vulnerable populations. It was devastating to witness. As you pointed out, our child leave care act is lacking. Frankly, it's deplorable. If a woman is fortunate enough to take FLMA leave after the birth of her child, it is unpaid. If we need to take this leave to take care of a sick family member, it is unpaid. Senior living care facilities are very costly and often unaffordable. Additionally, childcare costs in this country are outrageous and unaffordable. The cost for one month of full-time childcare can outweigh one month's wages. The waiting list is long for available childcare centers, and there aren't enough of them for working parents. Let's talk about education. It is astronomically expensive to attain a bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree in the U.S., even if a student is working. So while the U.S. can offer highly competitive global medical services, education, and so forth, it is not attainable for the vast majority of people. There are other countries that are better resourced to provide services to all.

I've had personal experience with Canada's health care system, it's excellent. My brother had a motorcycle accident in Quebec. They took very good care of him.

Yeah, I'm a Kiwi and thought the same too. (Unfortunately I am familiar with the health system.) US maternal fatality rates are the highest - by far - in the Western world.

Yeah, that's the way in New Zealand. We have about 60 MPs, and in each electorate you can only spend about $20k. And then the central party can spend a million or so for the whole country. PLUS the taxpayers give the parties money to spend on advertising. Now, you might think the last point is weird, but it reduces the parties' reliance on donations, which reduces special interest groups. Anyway. Just FYI. 🙂

@@user-te6eo1gw9l I think it saves wasting a whole lot of money. Here in NZ a "big" donation is usually under $100k. Most election work is done by unpaid volunteers. If you pay people, it counts toward the limit you have, so most people don't get paid. I used to do a lot with Labour and no-one got paid. The candidates would often put up their own money, too, and not rely on donations and (especially) lobby groups.

You are completely correct. John Oliver did an episode on it. It showed the discrepancy between rich and poor. Which tends to hit ethnic minorities worse than other groups.
