I bought four Shlage Accent bed & bath privacy levers, and all four failed well within the first year of owning them. And it wasn't just one bad batch; I bought two of them at my local Lowe's and two on Amazon.

I have the same problem with 3 bedroom doors.

I had same exact problem on two schlage handles but just lived with the problem. I've also had at least 5 of the latch mechanisms fail. The have a price made of pot metal that will inevitably break or wear out. I installed these handles about 10yrs ago, purchased at home Depot. Thank for the video 😊

I have these same locks throughout my house and they have been working 18 years. I guess when I bought mine they had better quality control. I don't use the inside passage locks that much but I tried them after watching your video.
@mroberts566

Yep, I their quality must have eroded over the years. Probably moved the manufacturing out of the country. Just a guess.

@@mroberts566 My house was built in 2005 with gold Schlage French door handles with pushbutton locks and they were crap back then too since they failed quickly. They could be opened simply by a kid jiggling the handle for 5 to 10 seconds. You should also bring up the point that the handles themselves are stupidly designed as while you expect them to be able to go up and down you don't expect such ridiculous flimsy forward and back play on them. I can't even tighten it because they don't use allen wrenches.

EXACTLY MY EXPERIENCE. I had one out of five still working, so I put it on the hall bathroom so our guests could expect privacy while they were in our home. One two year old, down the hall and both a guests privacy and our last working lock were both gone

Guys I had 2 Schlage door handles which would lock from inside but could be opened from outside. Here is a quick fix. Exchange out the hardware between the 2. Switch out the outside handle for door number 1 with that of door 2. Viola ! Both my door locks work now. Didnt cost me anything. Hope it works for you too. Thanks.

I can tell you that wouldn't have worked in my case, but it certainly wouldn't hurt for others to try that.

I have the same problem. I have been to Home Depot 2 times, and each time they allow me to replace them. But each time (3 times now), it fails within a week. I have been living with the problem for 6 months now, but my girls are all afraid someone will surprise them in the bathroom. I paid more to buy Schlage because it was supposed to be better quality. This should be something they can easily fix, but apparently they don’t care because based on the video it’s been happening for at least 3 years.

I have the EXACT same bathroom/bedroom door handles from Schlage and guess what? With "very" limited use (meaning we rarely actually lock the lock) the locking mechanism failed. Except in my case, the locking button on the bedroom/bathroom side is firmly stuck full "out" in the UNlocked position. The button doesn't budge so there's no way to lock the handle. Come on, Schlage, you gotta do better than this! :-(
@mroberts566

Exactly. Total garbage from a supposedly reputable company that sells its products at reputable stores. My question is, were they always this bad or did they decide to start using cheap materials and thus become garbage?

Hi, I have a schlage latitude bed and bath where the lock doesn't work anymore. The button doesn't depress full and engage. I ordered a replacement from HD which exhibited the same issue. Has anyone run into this?
@mroberts566
@mroberts566 2 года назад
I've never seen it on a brand new Schlage latch. It usually takes them about 8-10 months to fail.
@endersmith162
@endersmith162 3 года назад
Considering how creaky your hinges are, do you ever lube your hardware? You have to lube (yes, even the handset) every so often. I had an old schlage push button lock "fail" a while back and spraying some PB blaster fixed it.
@mroberts566
@mroberts566 3 года назад
Hmm... I don't know enough about it to say you're wrong. However, I'll say this. I've been a property manager for many years, managing around a hundred houses and condos. I've had a few levers fail at different units over the years (probably due to tenant misuse or maybe just bad luck), but having several identical levers fail in one house is very unusual and points to poor design and/or assembly. I've never heard of lubricating door handles regularly, and I don't remember seeing anything about that in the instructions when I've installed door handles. Again, not saying you're wrong, as lubricating moving parts probably can't hurt, but every other manufacturer seems to have figured out how to make levers that don't need to be lubricated every year.
@billchessell8213

This is my judgement, using a 10 power, LED lit Optivisor magnifier to observe the interior of the lock on the locked side, opposite the button. At the very end of the space which accepts the unlocking shaft from the inside of the door for emergency use, are two half circles that are meant to hold the central part of the lock still as the handle turns, keeping the handle from releasing the lock when the outside knob is jiggled or turned. These parts appear to be made out of pot metal, and are no more than an 1/8 of an inch thick. Using the lever handle to overcome this structure would take no more than a focused infant. It is impossible to disassemble this side as it is riveted together. I can see the possibility of grinding the rivets off and drilling, tapping, and screwing this area back together, but I can’t envision a way to reengineer the lock so it would survive the next toddler. In other words: Oil ain’t a gonna fix it.

I keep getting locked out of my own house. The first handle had to be returned! The second handle is very loose, installed by a professional carpenter, and loose from day one. About a year later, I am standing outside my house, giggling the lock for several minutes, and finally I can get in. Frustranting!!!! One of these days I fear I won't get into my house at all.....
