I don't have TikTok, but I've yet to buy anything from other forms of social media either. I guess this is where my big dose of skepticism is a good thing.

I have certain rules for myself in terms of shopping. Not purchasing on a social media app is one of them. I’ve definitely had my problems with purchasing to feel good so I’ve had to create boundaries for myself. Easier said than done but with so much being online and on social media you’ve got to.
@katierobinson
@katierobinson Месяц назад
a really good rule bc it means you have to be intentional about when / what you’re shopping and boundaries are always healthy!!!

I noticed that Gen Z is very climate concerned but has the worst shopping habits. No shade, Gen Z has it way harder than any generation; as a millennial, I had opportunity at a lower cost. However, buying less is win/win (you keep your money AND it's better for the environment).
@maddie8415
@maddie8415 29 дней назад
I have noticed the same contradiction and agree with your advice, but I find it untrue that Gen Z overall has it way harder than any generation. Yes, they have their own unique challenges (the climate crisis and increasing economic inequality being at the forefront), but other generations have also been plagued by existential threats and widespread financial hardship. And to be honest, the world used to be far more brutal in many ways. I think that when Gen Z repeatedly hears people say that their generation has it so much harder than any other that it makes them feel like giving up...and giving into things like fast fashion that only make their situation worse.

Idk if it’s very different in the UK, but in the U.S. we have almost no third spaces left, time or money for hobbies, and are generally very isolated from each other because of stress. Our system is practically insuring that the only place we can get a dopamine hit is shopping in our 10 minute break from work
@katierobinson

can completely believe that, if something isn't profitable in todays world then it's got to go 💀 the uk is the same (or becoming that way) and it feels like doing anything outside is impossible bc of cost / availability!!

How do you just spend hundreds of dollars on clothes? I just had to buy a new car battery (I live somewhere where public transit isn't an option) for $225 and I could feel my wallet crying! How do people afford these hauls? Or do they just put it all on credit? o.0

Credit is easier to get than ever, and the idea of "building credit" is more important than ever. When you mix that with the peak over-consumption culture we're in the result is people putting themselves in far more debt than necessary. It's sad.

i haven’t been a victim of the tiktok shop yet. honestly i think they went too hard with it & it annoys me. BUT i sort of get why people fall for it. i used to use tiktok as a place for reviews. not from obvious influencers but from normal people with no incentive to actually sell the thing. i can see that getting cloudy for people thinking it’s a recommendation from an honest person. there’s a new eye massager being pushed to me every third video for migraines, etc. and honestly, one of them made me curious. i went to amazon just to see the reviews for that specific one, and the reviews were horrible! they all said it broke after 5 uses. but speaking of clothes, & maybe you talked about it already, i would love some suggestions. it is HARD to find quality stuff anywhere anymore, even when i WANT to drop the money to invest in long-lasting pieces. & with second-hand it can be hard to find what you’re looking for
@katierobinson
@katierobinson 28 дней назад
oh 100%, i think i said a little in the video but the way tiktok naturally became a place to find reviews FIRST, and then the company capitalised on that organic content to create adverts/e-commerce opportunities feels so shady and dangerous! I've spoken a little about brand recs on this channel but I don't do much bc most of my clothes are secondhand & I tend to spend a bit more on quality when I shop firsthand, I've done one or two videos which I'll link but mostly my advice is shop a brand you love secondhand and if you're using resell sites then know an idea of what you want rather than being easily swayed by what's being pushed / available at the time - it's always better to wait for the perfect thing!

I think people just like buying cheap shit cause how else do you explain the sheer amount of people who buy this stuff without really thinking about the consequences?
@micheller3251
@micheller3251 18 дней назад
A lot of people think quantity is better than quality, and add to this the fact that most people would rather have something instantly than have to wait for a better version... With these social media stores that sell a lot for cheap AND ship faster than most ethical clothing options, combined with the messaging of influencers who get paid more for each dollar spent via their links, you get the ideal conditions for peak hyperconsummerism. It's not that people don't want quality, it's that getting the bad stuff is increasingly enticing to them. Everyone I know who does NOT follow this logic are people who were raised with an emphasis on financial responsibility and moderation, which is saddly not that common.

The shein haul content creators and commenters are definitely at the extreme end of fast fashion shopping in my opinion. In uni many people did buy clothes from shein but not like $300 hauls literally just like two tops or two dresses for going out. Even when i went to reception to collect my parcel, boohoo shein bags were small size so I think people usually order when they have an event/party to go to. And maybe after the event they get sick of the dress and order again? Idk but I haven’t met anyone who spends $400 much on shein or boohoo or pretty little thing irl

It all started with Facebook….. the time suck ….the dopamine hits with likes and shares ect…. Now every app is the same way . Even poshmark and curtsy….. live shows are the same and live buying in store . It’s nuts …. No one goes out and shops anymore for themselves at thrift stores ect…. The world has changed so much . We must vote with our dollars… stop buying fast fashion all together and stay off all social media . RU-vid can be bad too but also a tool so that one is tuff .

Good topic to cover! But at about 1.5 minutes in - that's not what wallet share means. It's the share of people's spending they're getting - so they're taking wallet share by getting people to spend at TikTok shop instead of at SheIn. It does not mean that TikTok shop is selling SheIn and getting a cut. They may be doing that as well, idk, but that's not what wallet share means.

Great video and such an important topic to talk about. The paradox of not being able to shop sustainably is so true! And something I can relate to, I used to think like that but now I much rather save up and buy one great item instead of a bunch of crap. I think that type of behavior is related to us constantly being fed new content, new trends, infinite scrolling - quantity over quality is reflected in our shopping habits as well.

The normal folks who buy fast fashion aren’t as big of an issue as the influencers who spend hundreds of dollars just to wear once for a video and toss/ return.

I am the definition of below poverty so I don't have a choice but to shop SheIn, since I've lost too much weight to justify keeping most of my clothing, but I find myself pulling things out of my cart all the time, and going through to make sure I will actually wear it.

@@missmartin85 I've thrifted before. My packages got stolen on two different occasions. How about you not judge someone who is literally dirt poor? Also want pity? If I want pity I'll cry on TikTok, not in a RU-vid comment section.

@@vvitch-mist20 well since you claim to already sew and you’re dirt poor, are you unable to cut/sew/ or make adjustments to your current clothing? You’re still trying to justify the purchases from SHEIN.
