I love how you broke this all down! Just in case this helps anyone reading through the comments I have straight fine but thick hair and I highly recommend only using rip and twist to start your dreads. I ended up removing my first set because of the crochet method!!! It looks great at first but within two to three months became my biggest regret. The ones that were only rip and twisted annoyed me at first but were doing wonderfully at the 6 month mark. I am going to start another set after my hair grows back a few inches from where I cut it (the crochet method also made it a major headache to remove them). Happy dreading everyone!!!

I have very straight hair and used the crochet hook method. I'm coming up on a year and couldn't be happier with the result. The only thing that was even slightly an issue was that for the first couple months, they looked unnatural and they were very tight. After the first few months though I got through the "ugly" phase and now almost a year later I'm so happy with them and would recommend this method for straight hair any day!

I just started my first set with 2 strand twists on 3c 4a hair. If there would ever be a reason for me to cut all my hair off, I'd start my second set free forming. I think there is a big difference in how they develop in long hair vs short hair
@ms.parker9
@ms.parker9 4 года назад
Hey! I think from his diagram, I might have 3c or 4a as well. My plan is to freeform. I would like to ask, if you could explain what you meant about locing and long hair. I ask because my hair is probably a few inches past my bra strap. It grew so much not really doing anything to it. What is your opinion about freeforming. With this length? Thank you ❤
@louel83
@louel83 4 года назад
Ninti 999 they seem to get much thicker when you start with longer hair most of the time. There is a free former on RU-vid who started her first set with longer hair and got really thick locs that time around. The second set she started from a buzz cut and here locs are much thinner, without doing any type of seperation herself

Dredlocks.. When we use the term we are essentially referencing the way in which Europeans looked down on African natural hair styles Europeans thought natural intertwined hair was disgusting and disturbing thus the term “dread” being associated with locks. Let that sink in, when you use the term ‘dreadlocks’

I know this video is older. I have a weird combo of hair types, but overall I'd say I'm maybe 2A, and most of my hair has zero texture!! Not owned a brush in over 10 years, and barely need to comb it because it just stays so smooth! It took me over 50 hours (over the course of 2 weeks) to get through all of my hair. I did twist&rip with crochet and interlocking, and I killed my shoulders back-combing too. Each dread took nearly an hour; longer if I had to pause to do anything else. Never been one to wash my hair often, so my scalp is used to me going long period without washing (like you talked about in a different video). I lightly washed and dried my hair in the afternoon and allowed it to dry mostly in the sun. The next morning, almost all of my dreads were half unlocked! Took me another 4 days just to get them retwisted. My husband has been picking at me because I went from doing nearly zero maintenance on my hair to spending all my downtime to maintain dreads lol.

Just to add something nobody ever seems to mention: Dread locks are like sponges, if they are soaked, it can take days for them to dry properly, depending on how fat they are.. Ok, maybe not multiple days, but 1
