Watch This Before Going to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor - Lessons Learned of What NOT To Do

During a 35-day road-trip through 23 states, we planned a 4 1/2 day mini adventure in Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. The planning started months prior, as we battled online for slots at Cadillac Mountain’s sunrise, hotly contested spots at Acadia’s Blackwood Campground, and seats for the Bar Harbor Whale Watching tour. We were so exhausted that we left after only three days. This video was made in an effort to keep your stamina up as you experience one of Maine’s most coveted points of interest. Don’t get run over like we did.
First things first: Get on Recreation.gov and figure out when to reserve your dates for Cadillac Mountain. There are TWO slots - one just for the sunrise experience and one for regular piddling around on the mountaintop during regular hours of operation.
If you really, really need to camp in Acadia National Park, you will likely go for Blackwoods Campground. If you look on a map, the camp is perfectly located in the middle of all the bigger points of interest (Thunder Hole, Precipice Trail, Cadillac Mountain, and the town of Bar Harbor). Although the area is absolutely beautiful, there’s still so much traffic that you may feel compelled to take a vehicle to many of those locations anyway. But, if realizing that you’ll end up car anyway doesn’t discourage you, maybe the fact that dragging your camper in a primitive campground will. No power with limited generator hours, no water and no showers in the community bathroom, no sewer, tight spaces due to trees, ridiculous levels with no pads or gravel - sounds fun. So why is it so hard to get a site? We battled online for days to secure a location on Recreation.gov. You aren’t aloud to book a camping space until you’re 60 days out. We did find a simple cheat to provide more opportunities to secure a site. In fact, once we did, we accidentally grabbed two sites at the same time. If you’re interested, let me know in the comments.
Want to cruise Maine’s gulf coast in search of whales? One word: Dramamine. We forgot…we got sick. But, it wasn’t that simple. Getting sick for five hours causes dehydration and exhaustion. We never recovered. In fact, due to bad timing, we made it worse by waking up at 3 a.m. the next morning to see the sunrise on Cadillac Mountain. Those two events, side by side, sucker punched the entire family to the point where we stayed at camp on day three - and left a day early.

Lol, this video cracks me up. It's like here meet the complaining family and listen to all the places they had to go and things they had to do when they were sick and hungover and tired. This makes me feel so much better about my life. 😂

@@PickingUpthePiecesofUs I have two family members that are autistic, stop using autism as an excuse/crutch.

@@filosofotacio8950 Thank you for watching the over 300 vlogs on our channel and seeing our family-with-autism grow for the last four years. No, we don’t focus on tougher days so much - we’d rather inspire other families with autism to have their own adventures instead. Our hope is that if just one family “does something different” to enrich the life of their special-needs child, then it was all worth it.

We also made a vlog about Geddy’s, a great restaurant right in the heart of Bar Harbor. Bethany was our server, and she was terrific.

Heading to Blackwoods next week. The boat story reminded me to bring Dramamine. I don’t think you mentioned when you guys were there. Shortly before you posted the video? Mid-August? We are hoping the crowds will be less during our 4 day visit arriving early next week. Thanks for the video. Thank you for your service.

We were there in late July. Yes, please bring Dramamine! We spent the entire day on the ‘fantail’ of the ship. Try Geddy’s!

I'm traveling from the Midwest to Acadia this summer- I don't think my husband and I will make it for sunrise considering travel time and the sunrise right before the summer solstice and jet lag 😂

You said to make sure you are within the height requirements due to old rock bridges and such. Rec.gov says 11' clearance. My TT is 11'3". Am I screwed?

I can’t remember exactly, but I do remember seeing how low the bridge was once we had detached from the camper. I definitely be ready to deflate your tires, worst case.

Hi, I was interested in finding out the simple cheat you used to provide more opportunities to secure a site at Blackwood’s, please?
@PickingUpthePiecesofUs
@PickingUpthePiecesofUs Год назад
Recreation.gov has a flaw in their reservation system that encourages people to cheat. We noticed that EVERY site would go within seconds when the site would open. It didn’t seem possible. We theorized that people were booking for whole two-week periods with their end date being accurate, but their start date ahead of their actual arrival. This bought them extra time to try and reserve a site. Once their actual start date became available, they would edit their reservation to that date, leaving a gap of dates no one else would even know had become available after the fact. Pretty selfish, but likely the only way to compete for a site there. There are a ton of sites off the island, which have much better amenities, like power, water, and provisions - but you have to drive in through Bar Harbor to get to Acadia every morning.
