I know it been a minute since you posted this, but I want to ask, does the Wise Money Card overcharges into another currency if you don’t have enough money exchanged to the currency you’re using while aboard? I really wanted to keep this card as an Emergency Fund Card that I have near me if something arises. If someone were to steal it, I would love to know that the theft wouldn’t have the ability to spend more than 800 USD while I have 10,000 of another currency like Euros in the Wise Money Bank.
Totally agree. Perhaps for the sake of completeness, we should mention that Wise does NOT issue a credit card, but a Visa debit card. So no credits or associated insurance(s).
You are correct. Been travelling overseas twice a year & using Wise for many years & never had any dramas. Much better deal than the big banks. Cheers.
I've been using a Wise card for a while & agree with everything said in this video. I also use Revolut which is also very good. Wise has more fiat currencies but Revolut has crypto, a metal card option & a higher fee free Atm limit (with the metal card), disposable 1-use virtual cards for safe online purchases, & even a travel delay feature for free lounge access if your flight is delayed for more than 1 hour. I use both cards/services. & I think it's always a good idea to have multiple cards available just in case 1 card does get blocked for some reason, or lost/stolen. I try to never put all my eggs in one basket.
I recently returned from Singapore, Malaysia, Nepal, Thailand, Indonesia and Aussie and used the Wise card in all of the countries, also used it on the MRT in Singapore....great card and easy to just transfer over onto the card what you will need for the day just in case it gets hacked.
TOTALLY agree with you, about the wise card (I am Aussie) used in Turkey, UK, Malaysia, Thailand, ABSOLUTELY trouble free so far. Saved a LOT of money, complete game changer....
Totally agree! I have an Emergency Fund account, an bring it's debit card when traveling. I leave it locked through the app. I then leave it my my hotel safe. I do a similar thing with my driver's license, leaving it in the safe and using my State ID card.
We are Aussies, travel the globe and have to say have not had any issues with our cards from our Aussie and Asian banks. We buy airfares and large purchases without issue as well as access cash in every country. Zero fees is a must as well as ability to lock and stop 🛑 online if lost. Good vid!
As I travel nearly full time. I have set up an AP from my New Zealand bank to my Wise card every week. I keep a balance of around $3-4000 on my Wisecard. If I am running down my wisecard balance I just do a manual top up. At first I transfer from my home NZ Dollar account to the currency of the country I was in and used from that. I stopped doing that and just had each transaction in-the foreign currency be debited from my home currency. It makes little difference and is easier.
We recently started using wise after having multiple problems with our Bank. Been a humbling experience using Wise. Looking forward to travelling with this card 👍
I’m considering really to get one now , I’ve recently recieved a travel card from my bank and I’m worried that I will have problems after seeing this vid I’m with Westpac
Gold silver!! I never travel without it after ATMs eating my cards. Thanks, Dan. Don’t help don’t help! Also, you can go into any jewelry store and sell silver and gold at spot price may be a 10% commission. The gold/ silver just gone up over the last few years and with the vulnerability of our economy, keep going up easy in the next few years.
Yes mate, I have got WISE, and I an Aussie and travel a lot with work and am married to a Thai lady and live in Thailand when I’m not away with work. I had to go into the NAB branch three times before I traveled and they would still block or cause problems for me…..WISE, No problems, I pull it out at the local 7/11 In Thailand and NO PROBLEMS…..
Only place I’ve had it not work was Cambodia. (We had to use another bank card there.) If you travel internationally, I recommend it! Easy to transfer funds onto the card to use at foreign ATMs.
Yes, Wise is great EXCEPT when they cancel your card before the expiration date leaving you with no card in a foreign country. Oh, they WILL NOT send a new card to your travel location. They want you to use the virtual card but many places do not have Apple Pay or some sort of TAP system. They were a 10 in my book but now? ......5.
Oh no!! This answered my question regarding getting a card sent if we lost our card outside the country we opened the account. What do you use now? Im sorry that happened to you.
@@timjoygray Wise canceled my card 45 days before it was due to expire because they are upgrading some security and payment systems. The trouble is I am traveling. You know the reason I got the card, to travel. So even though they sent out email notices I couldn't get a new card since I was not at my US address. I called and they said they would not cancel the card and if I had trouble to call them. Of course, the card stopped working mid-June and I called back to hear that there was nothing they could do and I would have to get a new card. Well I planned to do that when I was back in the US in August. And No, they could not send a new card to a different address in Mexico. I had to get an electronic card. Great except it is very difficult to use an electronic card in Mexico. Grocery stores don't always take electronic cards. This is a total pain in the A$$.
You can adjust your setting online with your bank (ING anyway) to advise you will be travelling overseas so they don't shut your card down. But for my upcoming trip I actually have a WISE card as well, it's good because you can pre load it when currency rates are good and hold on to it.
I normally send money to Thailand using Wise and it usually takes less than a minute to arrive there , although for 50,000 baht or over it has to go vis SCB or Bangkok Bank , which slows things down quite a bit.
Hi there, I not long ago, downloaded the Wise app to my Android. I haven't used it as of yet but, after watching your video, I'm feeling hopeful that there won't be any issues once I start. Thank again for useful information.
Have there been issues with banks blocking large payments to WISE (fraud alert)? This relates more to, say, using Wise to buy overseas property where it might be necessary to make a number transfers from bank acc. to wise due to a bank's daily payment restrictions.
A question: If I have USD and Euro balances on my Wise card and I am in Europe, when I use the card will the amount automatically be deducted from the Euro balance (versus converting from the USD balance)?
Excellent report. However, the first five words in your video title I read as negative clickbait. Maybe Aussies don't read it this way. But I, as a regular Wise transfer user from Canada, am glad I proceeded. Maybe reword it to say: Six months problem-free - Wise travel money car review. Happy trails!
Hey Lloyd, thanks for the informative video. Question, you mentioned you can load and use the card in Thailand but on the App I get a message saying "Our cards aren't available in Thailand" How did you get yours? Cheers
Have you ever had Wise block the card whilst traveling? Do you need to notify Wise of your trip before leaving? Also, was the card accepted everywhere on your trip and if not, where was it not accepted and what did you do? Thanks for the content I'm now subscribed to your channel😊
I didn't have any problems with my Wise card on my recent 8 week exploration trip to the Philippines. I used the card in the US once before the trip to make sure the card was not defective.
Hmm. I travel a lot overseas for decades and use a CBA or Westpac credit card and never had an issue. I do always select in their apps which countries I’m going to and when. But I do agree Wise is good in general.
We used the Wise card in the US recently and it was accepted in almost every case. The only exceptions were when we tried to purchase petrol from 2 separate stations, the card wasn't accepted. Otherwise, it was great.
Wise is good, but getting painful to take cash out of an ATM with low/no fees. We can do 2 free transactions of 100 USD a month, minus the ATM fee of like 3 USD. So yeah all good electronic but cash is a pita
Question about the Wise Card system. If I have $1000 CAD in my account and I’m in Vietnam, do I need to convert the CAD into VND in my account before taking it out or using the card in that particular country? Or can I just leave it as CAD and use the card?
You can withdraw the CAD and it will convert it to VND for you at the ATM, the ATM should give you the exchange rate before you proceed so you can make sure it's a good rate!
My understanding is that if you leave the currency as CAD, you will get the Visa exchange rate whereas if you convert to VND before use at ATM you get the WISE conversion rate Oftentimes the Visa rate is better
Awesome video! We just opened a Wise account. We currently live in FL and will be slow traveling soon & making Thailand as our base. Im not sure if you guys ever lost your Wise card…is it difficult for Wise to ship out a new card to Thailand or wherever you lost the card if its outside the country (us in the States) you opened the account? Thank you soo much in advance and hope Mandy is feeling better & hugs to cutie Bear!
OMG- I have problems with my bank freezing my card in America while not traveling. When I purchase something online they freeze my card. Lol. I definitely need to look into getting the Wise travel money card. I have heard about Wise money card and how good it is by other RU-vidrs who travel like you two..
hello i used the card for few years now. can you tell me how you use the card in thailand, which shop's and which atm's. also can you tell me, send wise the card to a thai adress. btw loves you canal
Perhaps you should mention that they are NOT issuing cards , virtual or otherwise to US. It took seven business days for funds to be deposited in my Wise account from my bank account. Lesson learned. Hope you enjoyed the funds you earned from my mistake
Hey Lloyd, love your content . . .Just curious if you have found taking cash out at international ATMs with Wise to be expensive? I may be reading it wrong, but it says on their site that after you withdraw your monthly limit (£200 if you are from the UK) they charge a low fixed fee , but a much higher variable fee of 1.75% charge for all money you take out after that? I could be misinterpreting how the variable fee is applied, but it seems that I'd frequently be incurring that variable fee and those see extraordinarily high - - almost like I am borrowing my own money. Which I wonder if that is what it really is, since they are not an actual bank? But maybe that hasn't been your experience?
Hi Michele, yes there is a fee for withdrawing money after you reach the threshold, but I've found the fee to be minimal compared to other bank cards, as well as the fact that I know my card will not be shut off at random times has been a blessing.
I would only use a local ATM if I really needed to , ie up to the limit in an emergency , some have fees with any card and basically like Al Capone in a box, some countries they are down right dangerous to use and avoid using at all costs eg SA , don't go near one by yourself. Far better and safer to stock up on the local currency before you leave.
Do WISE ever use OTP via your mobile SMS for extra validation? Well, if you go OS and get a local sim, you will have the hassle of having to switch SIMS just for the OTP unless you have a dual sim phone
Yes they do, but you can still receive text messages while overseas for instance on a Thai sim, you just need to set it up before you leave. That's what we do
I tried to reply to you yesterday but it seems my replies aren't working but I'll try again. Wise supports 2-step verification through the Wise app itself, through an authenticator app or through SMS. I only ever use verification through the Wise app itself as it's the most secure and convenient option. It avoids the hassle of trying to receive a OTP to a phone number you're not using while you travel. It also means you can avoid having to remember to set it up with whatever local number you've been given when you travel to a new country. It really is a great card and a great app. It's super easy to use, verification is as simple as tapping my fingerprint on my phone sensor when Wise asks for verification. I use it all around the world like this.

I used wise card in Thailand got charged by wise and Thai bank when taking money from ATM was not cost effective, might be ok for you but do your research instead of taking advice from people promoting companies. Safe travels
Latitude have just announced a $8 monthly fee if you're someone who doesn't use the card much. They also had a major data breach so not sure their security is top notch.
This seems to be an international problem. Banks will place a block on your CC and then not even let you know! I have a Wise account, but the debit cards are not available in South Africa (yet).
@@Tony-eb5kh It seems like being unable to reply could've been an issue at RU-vid's end with their servers. All my replies were just posted and now it seems like I'm spamming people when I just wanted my reply to get posted. There are ways around paying the 220thb fee. Some are more convenient than others depending on where you're from. If you're from the US supposedly Charles Schwab has a card where they will reimburse all fees. There may be others like that around. I can't get access to a card like that so I get around the fees by making manual withdrawals at the teller. This takes more time than simply withdrawing at an ATM and not all banks or branches allow manual teller transactions like this but they can be found. This might work for you if you want to avoid paying the 220thb fee.
@@hobo1704Philippines and I think Thailand are other countries with similar ATM fees, a few US banks will reimburse the first $10 or so per month, but not elsewhere.
I have a wise card and an UP card which is a travel card through Bendigo bank I got the UP card as there are NO fees I hope this isn’t the card you used in Las Vegas on your wedding day if it was I won’t use it I’ll just use my wise card also I took your advice and I have a holifly eSIM installed in my phone ready for my travel will I have any issues with my wise card when I switch from my home sim to my eSIM? Thanks for all your great advice! 🌸
I have been in 19 countries in the last 3 years and have never had any credit card or debit card blocked and I don't inform my financial institutions that I am travelling, what are you doing wrong?!? Only being able to take out 200 pounds per month free isn't very much, I here so much about this card and that it's free, but it isn't anywhere near free. Lastly, you haven't mentioned how much are you getting for every account that someone signs up for from your link?
@ExtraGuac007 I don't have a Wise Card yet, but do have the Wise App and use it to do money transfers. I believe that you can order the Card through the App. The cost of ordering a Wise Debit Card depends on which country you are in, for example, being in Australia, it would cost me $10AU. The only way for you to find out the cost in your country is by downloading the App or going to the Wise website
I live in Thailand now 23 years but have mailing address in Florida. My Wise card then is USA. It was mailed to Florida, but they said it could have been mailed to me here also. Thai addresses are so lengthy, I decided US would be better.
How is using a card that neither refunds your ATM fees nor gives you any points for purchases any good? It does not provide any of the other benefits credit cards extend, such as hotel status, purchase protection, rental car insurance, special discounts, cash back, no foreign transaction fees, lounge access, etc. This makes ho sense other than you getting referral credits, and this is the only benefit you get. At least you should let your audience know that you are not completely unbiased when advertising this card.
@stooneblue you can use it to get cash at ATMs when travelling and it has a great rate when you load a foreign currency to your account. Some places charge a fee to use a credit card, so this is a good option to avoid them:)
I think you are missing the point. Credit cards are great for some big ticket items when you want insurance etc or you desperately need to defer payment and have credit.... But this is good for lots of small purchases and getting cash out but most of all for only being charged under 0.5% in fx fees. You can have all the ff pts and credit you like on a CC but are likely paying 2.5 to 3% for the privilege (nearly like a years interest). Do the maths and save your money and buy the bloody airfare from savings rather than give your hard earned money to the oligopoly banks! Plus added protection of only pre loading a certain amount at a time to avoid thieves having a field day. He could have explained it a little more emphatically!
WISE IS NO GOOD IF YOU LIVE IN US. They have suspended issuing Debit Cards in US. What good is it if you can not get your money? You can only transfer to a Bank account
Excellent video Lloyd! I had the same issues as you and started to use the Wise app and credit card about 16 months ago. It's indeed super easy to use and probably the cheapest too. Have a great day and greetings to Mandy
For Australians - Bankwest Debit card is simpler has good xrates no fees it's simple and transfers are instant. Thai banks all charge 220Baht ATM fee I deleted WISE
