I've had my Snap-on 68" Epiq toolbox now for around 6 months. These are some of the things that I like and dislike about this box.
Overall I really like this toolbox, but there are a few downsides that I've discovered now that I've had it for awhile.
Hit me up in the comments with any other questions that you have!
Dylan

As some of you suggested in the comments, I gave my drawers a good pull and they come out all the way now. It's kinda weird that you'd have to do that on a box like this but it does work.

The HD Perspective glad you figured out to pull the drawer... same thing with my masters series when it was new I just yanked on em and they’ve been good ever since ...

It's usually because the grease on the slides gets clumped up in the back preventing it from coming out all the way. Most boxes do it

The HD Perspective buff the paint where the scratches are and then buy some automotive clear bra and install where the scratches used to be. The clear bra will protect the paint and is scratch resistant plus it’s easily removable.

Nice review! That’s a good looking box! Regarding the scratches, the box is powder coated and what you are mostly seeing aren’t actually scratches into the powder coat but are where your fingernails leave marks behind on top of the powder coat. If you hand wash those areas using diluted car soap or dish soap and I good microfiber cloth, most of them will wash off. I have a black masters series that showed fingernail marks really well, but the box looked nearly brand new after I cleaned mine. Polishes and stuff that are made for cars don’t work that well since there is no clear coat on that box.

Hello The HD Prospective, I just watched your video of your Snap-on Epiq toolbox. Nice toolbox new or used don't really matter. As for your problem with your toolbox drawers not pulling all the way out, well I think that's a lil bit of a problem with all Epic toolboxes. My Snap-on 84" Epiq does the same thing & has sense the 1st day I got it. I did get mine new. What I found is that you can open the drawer full open, has about 1 1/2"-2" still inside the toolbox & yes that makes it difficult to use the back 3" of your drawers. To fix this problem daily. Open each drawer as far as it goes. Then give the drawer a little harder pull. Be firm but not crazy. The drawer should come on out another 1"-2". You should be able to see the back top lip of the drawer pretty even with the flat front of the box. There is still about 1/2" of drawer that doesn't pull out. Now close the drawer completely & then open it all the way again and this time it will open all except the last 1/2" & will keep opening all the way for the rest of the day maybe 2-3 days. Every morning just open each drawer all the way then give it a little extra & your drawers will make you happy the rest of the day. Beleave me if that was going to hurt my box I would do it. Don't know why it does that. But most of the time I don't need what's at the back of my drawers. That's why it's at the back of the drawer. Check out my 1st video inventory I did of my toolbox here on RU-vid. I'm on my 6th toolbox, with 4 of them new. This will be my last 1 though. Thanks for sharing your toolbox video with us & I hope that helps you with your drawer. Gregg (Critter) Muse

I have owned several Snap On boxes. I now have a Mac box and will never go back. Drawers open all the way much bigger and deeper drawer. My socket drawer is 64 inches wide. Several thousand cheaper from my dealer also. Heavier duty than any of my past boxes. Snap On is not a bad box but there are other options. Good video.

The binding in the roller slides is common to all larger and heavier boxes. The slight slack in between the track brackets and the bearing balls themselves will gather up and bind slightly and gets progressively worse over time. I find that the more you DON'T fully extend the drawers at each open / close cycle, the faster this builds up to limit the end of full travel. On the drawers I'm in and out of all day long, I find they will bind a little once every few days. No big deal, just pull past the bind and fully extend it. Yes, in a perfect world, this issue would not exist, but understanding what causes it, I don't know how they could engineer it out without costing a lot more. With as heavy as the tools are, and opening and closing all day every work day, I'm not gonna make a big deal out it since it. As for the finish, color seems to make some difference. My red and green boxes (both past and present) have only scratched / scuffed with real abuse (banging flying broken parts into them, or whacking with a tool by accident). I think that blue is not the same powder coat finish, cause I have seen other blue ones looking more scuffed up like that. I've also only broken one of those plastic catches in 5 or 6 years of owning the Epiq series boxes - tool-man warranties them out, no problem. Get drawer guards for the top surface if you want to cover up that taped up spot - it'll look much nicer in polished or satin chrome than tape! Also: new boxes have different casters that are a little nicer / easier to set the brake.

The drawers do open all the way, you just have to pull a little harder. If you dont contantly open them all the way the slides get a stiff spot at the end

Buying a slightly used one IS the way to go if you do buy one. You did the right thing! As far as the scratches go, you can compound most of them out. I have a few SO boxes as well (used) and they have some minor scratches and dents too but they serve their intended purposes of holding tools. Believe me I am NOT a HF fan and don't own any of their tools, but I was in there with s few friends last month and I must say their Pro Line of boxes are now pretty good for 1/10 the SO pice. If I had to buy another one I'd more than likely spend under 1K rather than even a SO used. I LOVE S-O stuff but think they are now just SO OUT OF LINE with their pricing!
@TheHDPerspective
@TheHDPerspective 6 лет назад
I agree, while I've never been to harbor freight, (I'm up in Canada) they have a similar style store here. When buying any kind of tools it's important to weigh the options. Sometimes it's worth it to buy off the truck but now there's more options with online etc. I haven't bought anything from my snap on dealer for a year, because the pricing is so rediculous. I originally did price out a new snap on box with my dealer, but he wouldn't budge on the price. At the same time I found this box from a guy that was moving from working in the shop to out in a service truck and no longer needed the box. One of these days I might buff out the scratches, but as you say it serves it's purpose of holding tools and I think it does a really good job.
@bobbyw9046
@bobbyw9046 6 лет назад
I own Snap-on Tools and Boxes - so I do appreciate their quality. That said, UNLESS a box is wheeled all over the shop on a daily basis, a US General Box from HF will serve most of us just as well at 1/10 the cost. I know the HF Boxes will not stand up to constant movement and wheeling like the SO will, however 98% of the Mechanics and Tradesmen I know never move the box once it is set up! A Tool Box to solely STORE tools need NOT cost $15,000 - $25,000 bucks! The Epic is a fine box, but I'd rather be driving a new car or putting that money towards something really important rather than paying Mr. Snap-on every week! AND...... don't forget the interest either!
@TheHDPerspective
@TheHDPerspective 6 лет назад
Good point, that's also why I bought it used. Instead of paying full price for the new one. I would say most hd mechanics will have to move their box around the shop. Atleast that's been the case in all the shops I've worked in.
@truthhurts1754
@truthhurts1754 5 лет назад
A US General box that costs $1,000 has extremely heavy duty casters and a quarter inch steel plate that they are attached to. They will survive just fine moving around your tools in the shop.

Hey Dylan....got a awesome tip for ya buddy. Polish, and clean your drawer faces, get them free of scratches and buy a roll of Mylar paint protection film. Apply to drawer fronts and never worry about the paint again. When the film becomes dull or scuffed beyond desired look....peel and apply a fresh glossy peice. Did my KRL...along with drawer pulls...best 45 bucks I spent on my box maintenance.!!

I have a master series and the drawers open all the way. I would be astonished if they don’t on a epiq. Usually the drawers just have to be lubed slightly and that will no longer be an issue. It seems like the finger nail marks are more noticeable on the epiq too, it happens on my master series, but it’s catches your eye more on your box because of the shape of the outside of the drawer.
@Dansyoung

The outside of the drawer on the master series is flat where as your angles and the light seems to hit it in a way that reflects the imperfections.

If or when I paint my box it will be with Endura. I painted cars, trucks, boat, motorhomes and RVs with Endura. They is no stronger paint out there period. There's even a special Endura color named for me. Good video.

So what you're saying is. Just because its snap on you rushed into the purchase instead of shopping around. An extreme box probably would've meet all your complaints better. Like their side latches appear to be metal instead of plastic. Good luck
@TheHDPerspective
@TheHDPerspective 5 лет назад
I wouldn't say that. I'm actually really happy with the box. What I was trying to say is if you're looking at an epiq their are some things that I noticed while using it. I've heard of extreme toolboxes before but I've never seen one up close. They look nice, but something like a toolbox I have a hard time buying sight unseen. I like the drawer layout better on the snap on and the drawers are rated for double the weight of the extreme box. Also they don't ship to where I live anyways. So I got a deal on a used epiq and it serves my purposes.
