Please have the surprise movie be the animated or live-action Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast”, if it is, then afterwards you should react to the first sequel, “Beauty and the Beast:The Enchanted Christmas”. It is, from my point of view, the only “Beauty and the Beast” sequel that’s worth watching more than once. Tim Curry does a good job as the villain, Forte, and it goes much deeper into the story behind the curse that was placed on the Prince, servants, and the castle.

The storyline and aesthetic of this movie is definitely the closest to the books. In the books oz is more like a fully realized country instead of some magic-fairy land. The books are also much darker and include a lot of themes of violence and death. This movie specifically was based off of the 2nd and 3rd Oz books but mostly the 3rd one. Love ur videos and im super excited that you ended up checking this out! Keep up the good work :)

In the books, Mombi was just the grumpy old part-time witch from "Land of Oz", and Princess Langwidere was a silly spoiled princess with the fashion-head collection who wanted to swap Dorothy's for one of her lesser ones. Ozma is my favorite character from Baum's novels. When you learn her history you realize how sad her story can be. She was stolen from her father and robbed of her identity when she was only an infant. Her father was dethroned and died a prisoner(despite being a wise and just ruler)so she never had a chance to form any loving relationship with him. Her mother basically abandoned her when she was born and seemingly forgot about her. She was raised an abused servant stripped of her name, her heritage and even her gender. The people of Oz were too busy marveling at how wondrous the so-called Wizard who usurped the throne was, the only person who actually searched for her or showed any concern was Glinda the Good Witch. Even after Ozma was restored to her rightful place she didn't have any family or friends to return to(although Glinda would become a protector and mother figure). Is it any wonder that when Dorothy returned to Oz Ozma would turn to her for companionship and affection? The bond they formed obviously did so much to fill the emptiness in Ozma's life.(This would make good material for a movie itself.)

Ruth Plumly Thompson wrote "The Lost King of Oz" in which the former King (Ozma's father) turns out to be alive but enchanted. Once he returns to the Emerald City, he's quite willing to abdicate in favor of his daughter's continued rule.

And yet people want to say the GELPHIE / ELFIYERO / GELFIYERO love triangle from _Wicked_ was the first LGBTQ+ pairing in Oz when Dorothy X Ozma's already done so, hence the "Friends of Dorothy" (later expanded to "Friends of Elphaba") clothing line and the fact that Dorothy lives inside the Emerald City palace with Her Highness & is the only one with a master key to Ozma's private quarters.

Also, the design of the Scarecrow, Lion and Tin Man are all much closer to their illustrations in the book. The 1939 film designed them around the actors, but there wasn't really anything human looking about them in the book. The Lion was an actual lion that walked around on all 4 legs all the time. The Scarecrow's face was literally painted onto a sack full of straw, so he had to hide his permanent smile when he was unhappy. The Tin Man looked much like the metal characters that stood outside of plumbing and ironworks stores. The designs of the new characters in this film are also very close to the book.
@richardlevy1459
@richardlevy1459 2 года назад
The Tin Man cutting up his body is in the book. Nicol Williamson who played the doctor and the Nome King famously played Merlin in 'Excalibur' and was one of englands most prominent actors. The nurse who also played Mombi you may recognise as Bavmorda in 'Willow'. From the book her character Princess Mombi is combined from Princess Langwedere who changes her face and the witch Mombi.

I’m so glad you finally watched this! The score by David Shire is honestly my favorite film score of all time. Also, the reason that Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion look different is because their designs in Return to Oz are actually based on the original book illustrations from 1900-1918, before the 1939 Wizard of Oz film was even made! So these designs are the “original” ones. If you like the story of Return to Oz, I’d recommend reading the Oz book sequels. They all have really ingenious plots like this film.

Very sad this was Walter Murch's first and final film (although he'd won an Oscar for Best Sound Editing for APOCLYPSE NOW, and after directing RETURN TO OZ, he'd win another Sound Editing Oscar for THE ENGLISH PATIENT). Just a few Oz facts: 1. Dorothy's story about the Tin Woodman becoming the state we know him as today is actually straight out of the book. When he was human, he fell in love with a Munchkin maiden, but the maiden's mistress didn't want to romance to happen, so she hired the Wicked Witch of the East (Yes, the witch that got flattened by a falling house) to make sure of it. The witch enchanted his axe as he cutting some trees for building a cottage, his swung his axe, but it cut his leg off. So he went to a tinsmith to have a new leg built, but the witch kept doing the same thing to axe until he was completely made of tin. The reason he went to see the Wizard for a heart was because if he did have a heart, he could finally marry his lover. 2. The infamous ruby slippers were actually a movie original idea by MGM. When the book _The Wonderful Wizard of Oz_ was published in 1900 by L. Frank Baum, he wrote that the shoes were originally made out of silver. They still had the same power that it's known for; tap the heels together three times and think about where you want to go. When the screenplay was being written, they were originally gonna have the shoes be silver like the book, but screenwriter Noel Langley decided on having the slippers be ruby red in color because they figured the red would pop better with Technicolor. When the movie was made, Disney had to pay a licensing fee in order for them to use the ruby slippers in the film. 3. The character of Mombi is a mix of two characters: Mombi from the _Marvelous Land of Oz_ and Princess Langwidere of the Land of Ev from _Ozma of Oz._ Mombi was the central antagonist of the former novel, the mistress to Ozma (who was magically disguied as a boy named Tip), who was eventually defeated at the end of the novel. Princess Langwidere was from the neighboring Land of Ev, one of the various lands that surround the Deadly Desert, which in-turn surrounds Oz. She was most famous having a collection of 30 young and beautiful heads that she could easily swap out.

DOROTHY GALE!!! The soundtrack terrifyingly blasts as all the heads spin and turn to look at Dorothy… DOROTHY GALEEEE! The soundtrack continues to powerfully blast as the headless body of Mombi comes toward Dorothy, as she runs down the corridor, the truly nightmarish visual of headless terrified women screaming at her… This film is the true definition of a child’s living nightmare, everything that is normally safe and magical is the opposite, the magic doesn’t feel like an escape, the whole sense you feel is one of feeling trapped and stuck in a world where anything awful can and will happen. I think it’s a perfect sequel, it truly captures the terror of what it is to have a nightmare as a child. Nightmares as an adult you are used to, but nothing ever compares to the true terror of childhood nightmares… they are just so primal and raw, and you naturally are so young and vulnerable so everything does feel greater, more powerful and scarier than you. “The Wizard of Oz” is the perfect representation of a child’s fantasy, while “Return to Oz” is the perfect representation of a child’s nightmare… Great reaction!

I think that originally when we first meet Princess Ozma in the book series she's revealed to be: SPOILER trapped by the wicked witch of the north in the body of a servant boy who's name I've forgotten. Kind of progressive for a time, as good as a 'I'm a girl trapped in a boy's body' story for the early 1900s.

This is my ish! 👏🏼💚 the film is more based on the original Oz books by L. Frank Baum than the famous MGM film. Random facts: the ruby slippers were originally silver in the first book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”. And the actress, Fairuza Balk is more age appropriate for the character of Dorothy, as she was 9-11 when she started shooting “Return to Oz,” as opposed to a fully developed 16-17 year old Judy Garland portraying a little girl. Oh and the land of Oz in the books is real and not just a dream. Thanks for reacting to this underrated gem! 😊 David Shore, the composer, truly captures the tone for the atmosphere to not only Dorothy’s life in Kansas, but also the whimsical aspect to Oz. I love all the parallels between Dorothy's world and Oz. The squealing of the orderlies' wheels and the deranged patients' wailing become the Wheelers (who by the way somehow didn't frighten me as a kid, I think the Nome King bothered me the most, the Wheelers just have such cool costumes and means of transport). Then of course they turn good and back in Dorothy's world, the search party is all played by the actors who played the Wheelers. Nice little easter egg. Also more subtly creepy is the head nurse behind bars like Mombi, it makes you wonder what the hell she and Dr. Worley were doing to the patients.

Wheelers being dissolved into sand! A horrifying stop motion Nome King! They based these more on the books, I believe. Also, Dorothy is played by Fairuza Balk(who got really hot by "the Craft"). Theres another "Oz"movie which I really enjoy and I think you would down the line Nick. Like this one, it didn't have the rights to the MGM film and its story, but Disney did a few tricks to work around it. "Oz:The Great and Powerful"is a backstory for the Wizard himself taking control of Oz after coming from Kansas, with similar tropes to the original MGM film(real world characters becoming people within Oz, etc;)

"The way [Tik-Tok] walks..." There is a man inside, a gymnast named Michael Sundin who had to bend his 5'5" frame inside the 4' creation. With his head bent almost to his legs, he walked... backwards. Alas, he passed away at age 28, a casualty of AIDS. Jack Pumpkinhead, Billina, Tik-Tok, the Gump, Mombi (who here is a combined character with another character named Langwidere), and the Nome King (correct spelling) are all characters from the first two 'Wizard of Oz' sequel books, and pretty faithfully presented; elements like the Deadly Desert and the Wheelers are also from the books. Seeing the Gump flying in front of the full moon with Jack's head visible in silhouette warms the heart of this lifelong Oz fan. The Oz books are less sunny than people think. The dismembered Tin Woodman's history, for example, is pretty creepy. You do know that Billina is a hen, lays eggs... "him"???

This movie combines elements of The Land of Oz, book #2, which told the story of Kip, Mombi, Jack Pumpkinhead, & the Gump. It ends with the revelation that Princess Ozma of Oz had been turned into Kip. Ten to eleven year old Dorothy returns in book #3, Ozma of Oz. Dorothy was on a ship lost in a storm & found herself & Billina in a magical land *outside* of Oz, ruled by the evil Gnome King! She encounters the lunch pail tree, the Wheelers, TikTok, & the witch who collects heads & has the trinket room. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Bahm, was published in the 1890s. Ten year old Dorothy really was transported to the magical land of Oz, where she encountered little people in blue clothes called Munchkins, where the Witch of the North told Dorothy she had to ask the Wizard in the Emerald City to send her home. The Scarecrow, Tin Man (who tells Dorothy his name was Nick Chopper & the "dark" story of how he became tin), & the Cowardly Lion are depicted precisely like the the famous illustrations in all of Bahm's books. (There were 12 or 14 in total.) We, the fans of the novels, were absolutely thrilled when this movie came out, *especially* by the fact that they FINALLY cast a child actress the right age to be Dorothy!!! I absolutely love the animated versions of Jack, the Scarecrow (who sees better out of his big eye than his small one), the Tin Man, & the Lion!! This movie is a love letter to us. When the original was made, it was reworked to be a vehicle for teen star Judy Garland, who was close to ten years too old for the role! The production team mistakenly believed that, by binding her chest, she could pass for 14... Year, right. She was obviously a teenager acting like a little girl! And, with animation limited to cel animation, they had to redesign her companions so that actors could play them. Imagine how disappointed the fans of the books were on seeing them! The 19th century had a dangerous fascination with electricity, thinking it was a magical cure all. Hence the shock therapy that was supposed to "cure" Dorothy of her delusions. My major disappointment with this movie is that -- when the Gnome King takes physical form -- he looks HUMAN!!! Yes, I understand they were echoing the dream conceit from the bad first movie, so the Gnome King looks like the evil doctor, but why couldn't they have created a caricature of the actor while keeping the Gnome King aesthetic from the book? I WANTED TO SEE THE PLUMP GNOME KING!!! Yes, Glinda is the Good Witch of the South.

I like this movie fully for the realistic twist it gives. The first once was truly whimsical and a classic but this one is so dark. Dorothy comes back and talks about OZ to her family who are clearly worried about her mental health. The electric shocks and mombi scene was even more terrifying then a I remember. And while electric therapy still exists today, you cant give more then a bit of shock barely a twig like a jumpstart to the nerves to stabilise and that too in the most rare and extreme cases. The Electric therapy Dorothy was going to be submitted too would’ve left her comatose because it’s electric therapy in the experimental stage. I like how we still don’t get if it was a dream or reality. Thanks for the reaction! ❤️

One of my favorite parts about this movie is that just about every character in those packed shots at the end, with the parade, are specific characters from the Oz books. Glynda, the Patchwork Girl, General Jinjur, the Frog Man, and so on. So much effort for a scene that only lasts a couple minutes.

I finally got up the courage to rewatch this movie last month, for the first time since I saw it when I was a kid, which was about 25 years ago, I'm not sure how old I was at the time. My grandparents rented it for us 4 grandkids to watch, having no idea how dark it was. It terrified us all. My grandma had to stop the tape. Then she took me aside cause I was the oldest and said if I wanted to finish it I could. I didn't really want to but I wanted to see what happened, so I watched the rest. The things that I always remembered from it were the Wheelers, the headless stone statues, and Mombi with the interchangable heads, the wheelers turning into sand and even when Dorothy first discovers Tick Tock I found that creepy. To me it was like she's trapped in this room with some creepy figure that's going to come to life. Jack was creepy to me too. It's just the kind of vibes and feel to it and the characters. And of course the Gnome King at the end when he eats them. Then after all this time I watch it and when the Wheelers first appeared a chill ran up my spine, but right away we see that it's just a hat on their head and that's not really what their faces are. They're just like people underneath and they're actually goofy. And the part where the Wheeler disolves into sand happened so fast, I remember as being such a huge disturbing deal. Surprisingly I didn't remember the Shock Therapy part at the start. When I watched it this time, I was so nervous cause I had no idea how far they were going to go with it, it was really disturbing.

This is _very_ different from the 1939 musical, but that kind of makes sense. While the 1939 musical is the most well known adaptation of the books, it wasn't technically the first and definitely isn't the only one. In a few ways, this film is closer to the books, which did have their creepy and violent moments.

They did a story error because the robot says he can’t feel sorry, no matter what happens but then later in the movie when they’re about to be turned into ornaments, he cries. That’s OK though it’s cute so I’ll allow it. Another movie error is they never show the chicken being put in Jack’s head. I assumed that she fell in there, but she fell beside him, so I’m confused on how she got in his head. Also, it’s weird how Tiktok can’t turn into stone, but he can get turned into an ornament..

I find it very humorous when people watch Return to Oz, expecting it to be like Wizard of Oz with Judy Garland then get somewhat disappointed when its not at all like it. The thing is though, its not supposed to be like that movie at all, its meant to be more faithful to the actual books which are much more grim and dark than the famous glamorous adaptation of the book. That version of the film took so much creative freedom to a point that I actually like Return to Oz better due to its faithfulness and mood. Is it a little cheesy and campy? Yes, but I think it adds to the charm of it. Personally, I adore grim childhood stories over the fluff children are resorted to these days. In the wise words of Don Bluth, animator of Secret of Nimh and Black Cauldron, children can handle any kind of grim story to give them as long as there's a happy ending. its a shame that this kind of mindset is lost in the film industry today.

When I would describe it to people they just thought I was crazy. I started wondering if I had made the whole thing up. I find that funny now because the movie is about a girl who explains a crazy story that nobody believes. Of course this was before the internet. Also I'm sure someone else has mentioned this by now but Dorothy was played by Fairuza Balk who is the main which in The Craft.

This is the most authentic portrayal of Oz on film. (Not counting Baums silent films from the early 1900’s) Also.. the doctor and nurse at the start were going to perform shock therapy on Dorothy. They were sinister .. hence you could hear all the damaged patients screaming, locked in the cellar from their brains being fried. It’s kinda fucked up.

Alright first one! I absolutely love this film and first saw it around 12 or 13 years old. Since the 1950’s Walt Disney had the rights for the Wizard of Oz and had planned to do a film with the Mousketeers, but the plans fell through and after Walt’s death the rights were going to expire in the 1980’s so this film was made as basically a sequel to the 39’ film and it was unfairly bashed by Critics for being so dark in comparison to the original when the books were quite dark and two of the books were used as inspiration for this one: The Marvelous Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz. The film has since garnered quite the cult following and while it isn’t better than the original which I will say. It is a very good sequel and the reason Dorothy is played by a younger actress is because in the books that is roughly the age she would be instead of Judy Garland’s sixteen year old self, The Disney studio had to pay MGM a fee to use the Ruby Slippers in their film since they were the ones who came up with then being Ruby as in the books they were silver. To clarify the beginning setup with the hospital and the doctor they were going to do a new system called Shock Therapy to basically make Dorothy “Back to Normal” so yes it was best she escaped. The reason I’ve seen explain why the eggs are poison to Gnomes is they are not of natural birth and the egg is a representation of that. I don’t know if that is the true reason or not, but that is what I read. Also there is some deleted scenes that should have been kept in the film: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ojvwUIYokdI.html as many of them explained things better including having the real world equivalent of Tik Tok be the policeman driving the wagon the nurse is in at the end of the film The film only received a pg rating and the first Disney film to have a pg-13 rating wouldn’t be until Pirates of the Caribbean. One thing I wanted to bring up is when Dorothy ends up in Oz it actually happens to her and she really goes there, but comes back as though it was all a dream and similar to the 1939 film where Miss Gulch and the Witch were the two counterparts of each other in this one the doctor and the head nurse were the real world equivalents of the Gnome King and Princess Mombi and played by the same people. You brought up how you didn’t care for the designs of Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion, but to be fair the way I see it at least is Disney gave their own look for the characters and land of Oz in general because wouldn’t it seem rather unoriginal for this world if everyone who made an Oz film if they just copied the exact same design as the classic?

Great facts overall, but it was Ozma of Oz, not Tik Tok of Oz, that was the partial inspiration for this film. You are correct about The Marvelous Land of Oz, however. As far as the design of the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion are concerned, they are more directly based on the illustrations by John R. Neill from the original books. Disney probably did this more to avoid copyright infringement on MGM's costume designs for the 1939 film. Disney specifically licensed the right to use the ruby slippers for this movie, since they were more recognizable to movie-going audiences than the silver shoes L. Frank Baum originally wrote about (though it should be noted that the silver shoes had been used in 1978's The Wiz, the all-black version of The Wizard of Oz).
