The chainsaw was real. In the audio commentary of the film Gunnar Hansen (Leatherface) said that at one point during the chase scene he did a sharp turn and his feet slid out from under him, resulting in him falling and the chainsaw going up in the air. Due to limited visibility with the mask on Gunnar couldn't see where the chainsaw was, so he rolled on to his side and covered his head. Thankfully the chainsaw landed right beside him.

The wild thing is, this movie's also a great example of how you don't need buckets of blood/gore to make a sickening and disturbing horror film. When you really break it down shot-for-shot, there isn't THAT much explicit blood/gore onscreen when compared to many other horror films. But the horrific implications of the story, the performances, and the music/sound editing still all combine to create something truly unnerving.
@LiirThropp2687
@LiirThropp2687 6 месяцев назад
All of this. There's almost an urban legend of how gory and bloody this film is. And the truth is it's not that bloody. There's more blood on Sally at the end than in the entire movie.
@elijahvincent985
@elijahvincent985 6 месяцев назад
To put it into perspective, Tobe Hooper originally wanted to give this film a PG rating to give teenagers a story about why you *shouldn't* pick up hitchhikers. The original cut received the X rating, despite almost no gore and little blood. He trimmed 15 minutes of footage out to secure an R rating that he did not want but needed. The entirety of the cut footage can be watched on RU-vid, but the audio tapes that recorded the dialog got lost over time.

@jadeandjesse5908

Yes, they covered all the windows with black garbage bags so they could film during the day and have it appear like night. It made the temperature in the house sky rocket, and it was already well over 100 degrees outside. They used real roadkill to get the bones and pelts for the house set, along with real meat. The meat and carcases spoiled in the heat, so that house was hot, stank of death, and they did film for well over 30 hours.

There are a few reasons as to why they shot for so long. One was that the actor who played Grandpa didn't want to go through such an extensive process in putting on the makeup more than once so they shot all of his scenes in one day. The other was that Jim Siedow, the cook, only had a week's contract so they used him to the last second before he left

Actually it's based on numerous things leather face is based in Ed gein but the family is based Elmer Wayne Henley's. Henley's arrest which the director witnessed as a young boy and Dean corll which Henley helped and David Owen brooks so the family is a mash up of these men and it's known as the Houston Mass murders and of course post Vietnam war culture.

@@jesusramirezromo2037 Maybe...maybe not. While he has two absolutely confirmed victims, there were another six or seven that he could have done. One of which was his own brother. He supposedly died in a brushfire gone wrong...but he wasn't burned and he had a bad head wound. Pretty sure there was no sign of smoke inhalation. The wound was ascribed to him falling onto a rock. Ed's brother was the opposite of him, hating the way his mother treated him, having friends at school whether she approved or not...and he made the mistake of talking to Ed about his feelings on the matter.

It's based on Wisconsin killer and graverobber/cannibal Ed Gein from the 1950's. The three main villains represent the three sides of Ed Gein's personality. There's a lot of shallow rooted pine in Florida, and a motor-saw is the difference between a hard hour of work or 10 and a hernia. And its a real chainsaw, you can take the chain off and still let the motor wind out like that. Without the blade, there's nothing going on but the sound of the motor.

The inspiration behind this film came from the life and crimes of a grave-robbing mass murderer Ed Gein. Made a lot of furniture and certain clothing (wigs and chest plates) outta dead people. He died while institutionalised. This 1974 horror flick was not the only fictional work to be inspired by Gein - there was a novel from Robert Bloch called Psycho (the Alfred Hitchcock film and the Bates Motel TV series are based on the novel) and Silence of the Lambs - the sequel to Red Dragon by Thomas Harris (along with the cinematic adaptation by Johnathan Demme). There’s other films within the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. The best of them are Texas Chainsaw Massacre III and the 2003 remake and its 2006 prequel along with it, the Leatherface family origin film. Gunnar Hansen’s Leatherface is so popular that his incarnation of the character did end up in Dead by Daylight. And yes it was a real chainsaw used.

34:20 Gunnar Hansen's (Leatherface) scream was REAL! In the commentary he explained how they set up him being "hit" in the leg (a serious MUST LISTEN)... He actually felt like he was sawed into leaving him to SCREAM!

Partially true, he thought he sawed into his leg because the piece of metal thy had under the pants got very hot from the chains, so along with the visual he thought he sawed into his leg

Just started watching your videos and i love it lol Also just FYI this character is based off of a killer named Ed Gein. He killed and grave-robbed and when police searched his home they found body parts and human skin made into furniture, dishes and clothing. He had a belt made of NIPPLES. Anyway, love your content :)

This movie is loosely inspired by real events. Mostly Ed Gein, who is not a confirmed 'serial' killer. This movie kind of kickstarted gruesome slasher films that claim to be real to make it scarier, and tbh I hate that. I get when they made this, the idea was that it wasnt scary because it did happen, but because it could. But now crap like Wolf Creek and The Strangers use "true story" as a crutch because literally every person i have ever met agrees that if it's true, it's scarier. So movies use it to manipulate people into being more scared than they would be because a film is well made or has a good disturbing tone. This is just my opinion, im not gonna argue the quality of The Strangers of Wolf Creek thats beside the point

You weren't supposed to read at the beginning, you were supposed to listen to the dulcet tones of John Larroquette. Astrology did indeed exist before 2010. And yes, all people in Texas are like that.

He's freaking out. Where's all these kids coming from. Leatherface just wants to be home like Kevin in home alone and all these kids keep braking in like they're the wet bandits lol or sticky bandits lol.

If im not mistaken... the skeleton in the wheelchair/ chair was a real human skeleton. The fact that the movie is linked to real life events makes it more disturbing.

It's based on a true story about a guy named Ed Gein. But Ed didnt kill as many people as the Sawyer family did. Dug up people's graves and did "stuff" to them.

Long before PG-13 existed (only G, PG, R & X [changed to NC-17]) Tobe Hooper used very little blood or gore in attempt at getting a PG rating. His attempt failed and had a hard time even getting an R

I was expecting a sponsor for the blender. Nothing. Now I’m worried about the poor smoothie not staying in, considering the movie and the thumbnail. Welp, there was already a gag pause. Hoping for the best! Edit: you made it! I only watched this movie once, and it was disturbing. I wasn’t a major Sally fan, but by the time she was facing Leatherface, she won me over. She truly earned her final girl status. That dinner scene was so intense and unsettling. No wonder she had crazy eyes by the end!
