Claudia isn't manipulating Louis. She needs an adult vampire to take care of her. She knew Louis wanted to be with Armand. So she found a woman who agreed to be her companion. She is letting Louis go. Something Lestat didn't want to do. Lestat manipulated Louis even turning Claudia to essentially baby trap him. Poor Claudia didn't deserve that life and even though she loves Louis, she will still let him go so he can be happy. She is vicious and a killer but considering she was turned as a child, she will have childlike tendencies to throw temper tantrums and such.

The theatricality of it is pure Anne Rice. Her writing is very florid, bordering on purple sometimes. This book was especially intense, as she wrote it as a horrified scream of a book after losing her own daughter. (It was a standalone book that became a series. Everything outside of this story - Akasha, Marius, etc. - was retconned into the story.) It revels in its darkness, its Gothic self-flagellation. (Me, I think the best line in the whole film is Lestat's eyeroll about Louis's eternal whining.)

Armand is not at all heartless and cold as some people make him out to be. He isn't the villain, just like lestat isn't. He is manipulative and stoic and responsible for Claudia's death. But Louis is aware of all of this. He still loves Armand and stays with him for a century. Armand actually loves louis in his way. He does everything to keep him just like lestat does. Yes he is a little freaky sometimes but he is not as bad as people make him out to be. None of the vampires should be expected to be moral anyway

The actors said that filming this movie was difficult, for starters they barely saw sunlight during filming and the costume and makeup departments put them through the ringer. Actors would have to be upside down so that their blood would rush and they could get their veins painted, then the contacts, double fangs and nails were not very comfortable, and the wigs and costumes weren't either. At the time Tom Cruise said that this was the hardest role he had ever done, and contrary to popular belief he understood how gay this movie was and rolled with it lol. He liked this character a lot, to the point he did an interview as Lestat for Interview Magazine. He proved how good he was for the role and Anne Rice had to issue a public apology for her words against him playing Lestat 😅

Too true. The movie is excellent, perhaps my favourite and definitely one of my favourite movies of all time. The books are in a whole league of their own. She really should go down in time as one of the classics, she easily matches the likes of Stephen King (he's more of a cult classic writer, we wouldn't really think of him in the same category as Dickens). The series looks like a pile of woke crap like everything now, just lazily and dishonestly leeching off the success of an existing hit movie/series to try to brainwash us. No talent or effort required, just race swap all the white characters. Louis and Claudia are black! Then Claudia was recast for not being black enough! Anne Rice was was going to do a series with her son but sadly died before it could be. This toxic rot designed to push a narrative like everything else is the exact opposite of her vision and a monumental insult to her name and legacy..

This might be the best reaction I've ever seen. 😂 "I could become the old Lestat" We don't need the old Lestat 👀 I love seeing new people discover this movie! I fell in love with it as a kid when my sister watched it, and it's still one of my favourites today. Off the charts Gothic! And the atmosphere, music, and acting is just phenomenal. It might come off as a bit over the top, but we have to remember that less emotionality is the trend nowadays, and it's a Gothic story. I haven't worked up the courage to watch the show yet.

Claudia is far more tragic in the book because she is only 5 when they turn her so it's not long before she's completely forgotten being human but stuck just a little bigger than a toddler. A small porcelain doll forever. This is a very accurate adaptation of the book with very few changes and omissions here and there like the ending. In the book, Lestat doesn't ambush Daniel. Daniel goes looking for Lestat at the plantation but finds Armand there instead. The new show is more of a reimagining of it all and takes many liberties. I'm enjoying the new show as it's own thing though and curious where they will take it. Book 2 and 3 are my favorites of the series however and after the dumpster fire that was the Queen of the Damned movie, I'm nervous as to how the show may adapt them because the books are so rich with the history and lore of the vampires that just wasn't in that movie at all. Also, Akasha hasn't been in the sun for thousands of years so her skin is a bleached marble white. It makes her even more unnerving and frighting because she looks like a living marble statue when she moves.
@shalayahomebodytv
@shalayahomebodytv 10 месяцев назад
I just started back reading the books, and there are so many details left out. I get it because it's a long book. But hopefully, the show can add more backstory and put in the history of the ancients better than the movies.

This review had me rolling! Lestat laughing when Louis fed on Claudia took me TF out. All of the dolls were mostly from Lestat for her "birthday". She was 70 when they fought Lestat. Madeleine was a doll maker and Claudia met her in one of the shops. She lost her daughter and made dolls in the daughter's image. Yes, Armand in the books was the king of mind games and a whole menace. As far as comparisons, I prefer the show. Though, TBF they squeezed the equivalent of 2 seasons into the one film. Show Claudia (crossing fingers for casting😢) was just as ruthless but actually cares about Louis. I'm not convinced that movie Claudia was capable of anything but making sure that she had a protector to depend on vs feeling genuine love for Louis.

As a book reader, I laughed during your reactions. You always go hard on my boy Lestat😂 It only seems like things are moving fast in the movie, but Louis, Claudia & Lestat live together for at least 70 yrs prior to the murder. Claudia doesn’t remember being human at all. Just remember the ‘94 movie is only based on book 1 IWTV. Also, some of the things that happened in the movie didn’t occur in the book. It’s hard to compare the movie to the show because the show is going to be based more on the events from the books (with liberties, of course). There are 15 books in the VC series…so, yes Louis and Lestat are end game. I will say the timeline in the movie is book accurate. I’m looking forward to how things progress in the new timeline on the show. I prefer the show even with the changes. However, the ‘94 movie will always hold a special place in my heart…unlike that crap that was QOTD.

@@shalayahomebodytv Yes, we have a looong way to go before 100% end game. However, they get back together off & on between Lestat’s shenanigans and those times are heartbreakingly good too. The Armand & Lestat relationship is deliciously petty. The love/hate between them is real and I hope we get all their spats on the show. I have a feeling the show is going to do justice to Armand. He was barely in the movie, so movie watchers have no idea why book readers are so hyped up about him. I want you to watch QOTD so bad, but I feel like you have to read or listen to TVL & QOTD books to really appreciate how horrible that movie is. I will be here when that comes either way😂

I only read Interview about 20 years ago. It was decent. I think I started "The Vampire Lestat" but never finished it. Maybe one of these days I'll read the entire series. That being said, I thought QOTD was a decent movie. I can't speak to its authenticity to the books. But, I liked it as a movie. I also liked the portrayal of Lestat. It shows a different side of him and I thought the actor, his name escapes me...Townsend or some such, did a good job.

It was clear in the show that cluadia was created to keep louis there. remember when he went and got her off the train, and brought her back home. Armand is not mean in the movie or the book, but at the end when they Louis leaves him, this is yet to be seen in the show. What you see in the show of Louis and Armand in the apt, that is the time before he knows what Armand had done. He doesn't know or remember that Armand had something to do with Claudias death. The ending in the movie with lestat biting daniel, never happened in the book. Remember the scene in the show where Louis at the tree and he took off his shoes and put them in the sand, at the tree, that is important with how claudia died. Here ashes are in the sand. I like the show more because the characters are more drawn out. Remember instead of dumping lestat in the show, they put him in the trash, where he was eating rats.

Yay, I'm so happy to see you reviewed this movie! It's been one of my favorites since I was a kid and my sister and I still quote it all the time to each other lol! One thing I really hate is that they way the movie portrays Louis at the beginning. Louis is a slave owner in the book, but I feel like the book handles it a little bit better, or at least more realistically. In the book, Louis isn't shown to be incredibly cruel to the slaves, but he clearly saw them as his property and didn't really think of them beyond that . After he becomes a vampire, he comments that he underestimated the slaves intelligence when he was human, and while all of that is terrible, it at least feels more realistic for the time period. The woman he had feelings for in the book was a white woman, not one of the slaves. They added that fawning slave woman in for the movie and it's always bothered me. Anne was definitely guilty of some problematic phrasing at times in the books when it came to race, but the whole "nice slave owner/happy slave" garbage wasn't put into the story by her. I really appreciate the series changing Louis from being a white creole slave owner to a black creole man. We don't need another "nice slave owner" story.

I'm still not sold on them turning a slave owner into a black guy. His privilege is a significant factor in who Louis is as a character, both in terms of his development and as a setting for the story. He's a slave owner who goes from exploiting people because he believes they're lesser, to realizing they're equal, to exploiting them to sustain his life.

lestat was in a torpor in that old house in new orleans, long lived vampires in TVC often go into stretches of suspended activity to heal devastating injuries or just when the mental fatigue from living hits. of course lestat was still a little baby during the events of IWTV. but he spent a good chunk of that 100+ years or so literally dug into the dirt, barely conscious.
