I know you're already on Return of the King at this point, but this is how I like to explain Aragorn, Arwen, and Eowyn. Aragorn and Arwen have been together for decades and Arwen was willing to give up her immortality for him. (Although they'd both live for centuries, Arwen will live longer). So they love each other deeply. Aragorn wants what is best for her and tells her she should go to the Undying Lands. So he leaves believing she's going but still loves her so he's not going to get over her quickly. Now, Aragorn meets Eowyn. I think he sees someone who's lonely and has no hope so tries to be a friend to her and is very kind. Eowyn definitely has a crush on him. He comes into her life when she has no hope. Her brother was banished, her uncle is being cursed and she's being creeped on by wormtongue. On top of giving her hope, I think she's in awe of him. He's human but can speak elvish, which is basically unheard of. Then she finds out he's a descendent of numenor which she thought was a legend. So I think it's a lot of hero worship on her part. And he's being a friend who is still in love with Arwen even if she's leaving.
@LadyOndyne
@LadyOndyne 2 года назад
She wanted what he represented: freedom, fight and glory. But she did not truly loved him for himself. SPOILER Eowyn was bitter and hopeless, almost su1cidal in the 3rd book after his rejection. And after the battles, she realised war and violence is not something to love and yearn for. As Faramir said (not rembember the exact worlds, but) " I love the sword not for what it represents, but for what it defends". Amazing how Eowyn and Faramir are the ones who most represent Tolkien's view of the war.

*Arwen died of grief only ONE year after Aragorn's death. After they had lived happily together for a long time* (by men standards it was a well and long live life) *they created a life together and have their children.* Since Arwen chose a mortal life for Aragorn and bind herself to him, after her death she will go to the same place where Aragorn is in the "after life" and they would be reunited, and is the same place their children will go when eventually when they die in the future, and they'll be together....... *Copy/Paste comment from the user Kelly Davidson:* When I first read the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen in the appendices, I was really moved by Arwen's ending and used to feel it was beyond tragic. But after several readings, and a few decades to consider it, I don't feel that it is a tragic ending for her. Because of her choice, her fëa (soul) will live forever in the Timeless Halls with Eru (The God and creator in Tolkien's lore), her husband, and her children. Yes, she will be forever sundered from her mother and father and I assume her brothers, too. It is without doubt a tragic loss for the Firstborn (and for Arda, in general). But for Arwen, who lived as she chose, loved as she chose, and died as she chose, I no longer see it that way. *Sorry for my bad engilsh, it's not my native language.*

Faramir's flashback of Boromir and their father was not included in the Theatrical Version. It's one of the reasons I push the Extended Edition.
@PatrixBest
@PatrixBest 2 года назад
Yeah, it's pretty important to understand why Boromir was corrupted by the ring more easily than the others; it wasn't for personal greed or whatever, he was being crushed by responsibility to his people and his father, and the ring took advantage of that.
@PeterDivine

Eh, it's a really fair trade-off in general imho. The Extended Edition gives more details that get lost from the Theatrical release, but the theatre release has considerably better pacing. Neither of them are bad choices.... and of course they aren't, it's friggin' LOTR.

The Dunedain are descendants of Numenor. Numenorians were blessed with long life and lived on the island of Numenor. Until the island was sank into the sea thousands of years ago (long story) but the numenorians who survived sailed to Middle-Earth and created the kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor. The line of kings of these kingdoms were descended from Numenor. This is the same line of kings Aragorn is descended from.

The Undying Lands are across the sea, they're sort of a heaven on Earth for elves as they are typically immortal but traditionally it's no mortals allowed as they go on to a different judgement. Sauron never enslaved the elven rings so they were used progressively after his defeat to uphold the kingdoms. But now he's back the Ring decides their fate - if the Ring is destroyed the Elven rings lose their protective power, if Sauron wins they become enslaved. So either way the elves need to leave... Love these reactions, your channel's a favourite of mine :)

The Undying Lands, (which is actually a continent called Valinor) are not just across the sea. They were removed from the world in second age, so the Elven ships have to follow the "Straight Road" to get to them, making it currently impossible for mortals to get to them otherwise. That's a whole nother story though.

Helm's Deep was one of the most incredible theater experiences ever. The marching and pounding of the spears shook the theater. We all were just holding our breaths. The elves did not come in the books. It was a change I approve of for the movies. I appreciate the emotion it conjures: the elves could have stayed out, left and lived immortal lives. Helms Deep should look awesome--it took them 3 or 4 months to film, the majority in the rain. Afterwards, cast and crew all got shirts that read: "I Survived Helm's Deep". I love how we got to get to know the other members of the Fellowship better. Gimli and Legolas's rivalry is different from the books but I appreciate it. John Rhys Davies, who plays Glimi, gave some much-needed humor to break up the tension. I always loved his character is quite short yet he is the tallest main cast member. He is also the voice of Treebeard.

The cool thing about Legolas is you have to remember he is almost 3000 years old. He has spent his entire life training and honing his skills as a tracker, hunter, and warrior. Imagine how good you would be at something if you could practice for 3000 years. Imagine how strong and honed your muscles would be if you didn’t age. That’s where Legolas gets his “powers” from, not really from magic. Plus, elves basically have hollow bones, they’re much lighter than men and dwarves. This is demonstrated in the first movie when Legolas is walking on top of the snow while even the small hobbits sink into the snow.

About Aragorn’s age. Elrond is actually half elf, half man. His mother and father were the two that Aragorn was singing about in the first movie. Elrond and his twin brother defeated Sauron’s old boss (before Elrond helped defeat Sauron the for the first time, Elrond is a true badass). As a gift for their valour, the gods granted Elrond and his brother a choice - to be elf and be immortal, or be man and be mortal (side note, men are jealous of elf immortality, while elves are jealous of man’s mortality, as it gives them passion). Elrond chose immortality, his brother chose mortality, although it was mortality after a very long life. Aragorn is a descendent of Elrond’s brother, a couple thousand years down the line. As such, Aragorn is blessed with long life. When he was a child, Aragorn’s mother sent him to live with Elrond, so Elrond could teach him things that she couldn’t. And so yes, Aragorn and Arwen are basically distant cousins. They met when Aragorn was in his 20s, when he was visiting Lady Galadriel. Aragorn spent many years silently observing the world of men when he was in his 30s, 40s, and 50s, quietly partaking in their affairs, before returning to the woods near Rivendale to become a Ranger. Based on his experience, he decided that the world of men did not deserve to be united under one king, plus he also feared his own shortcomings as a man. This is when he met Gandalf, and began secretly working in earnest to help Gandalf on his quest to track down The One Ring, based on events and things that Gandalf discovers during the events of The Hobbit (that said, Aragorn doesn’t actually make any appearances in The Hobbit, but he’s carrying out tasks for Gandalf in the background).

When Melkor was defeated, Elrond and Elros were still a child. They had no part in his defeat. They are given the choice to choose to be an elf or a human because of their line, not because of their valour. One line is from Eärendil who is Elrond and Elros' father(who was a half-elf and he chose to be an elf), and Eärendil's parents were Idril(elf) and Tuor(human). The other line is from Elwing who is Elrond and Elros' mother(also a half-elf and she also chose to be an elf), and Elwing's parents were Nimloth(elf) and Dior(a half-elf who chose to be an elf), and Dior's parents were the famous Beren(human) and Luthien(elf).

He is a Mirkwood elf who has seen some creepy shit, but witnessing wild trees tearing an army of uruk-hai to shreds makes you remember once more not to fuck with nature. Also, I really enjoy regular approach to destroying the dark forces with water, like Arwen's waterbending and the most satisfying ever scene of Isengard getting a good deep-cleaning. Also, yes, Gandalf did really die and was brought back, which makes this a case of divine intervention. And if you look closely, you may notice he wears the same elvish cloack as everyone else, cause after he was brought back, he spent some time in Lothlorien in what could be called intensive physiotherapy for angelic creatures.

The fate of the Ents is quite sad, for having the Entwives (female Ents) lost they are not able to breed new Entings. They are also immortal (and if not, extremely long-lived anyways) so they are doomed for a very, very slow and quiet extinction. Thats why Treebeard mentioned "the last march of the Ents" because it most likely was exactly so. If they werent slain in the battle, the time itself will be their undoing. It wasnt mentioned in the movies, but many Ents will become more and more tree-like, not moving or talking anymore and eventually just give up and reducing into mere tree. In Tolkien's mythos the vaning of magic from the world is a on-going theme, and as the Ents are beings of magic and wonder of The Elder Days, when the magic was very prevalent in the world, so is also their fate to fade into legends as the Age of Men is at hand.

Trees of Fangorn Forest are just trees, albeit ones the Elves and Ents have taught to move and speak. Ents are Tree-herders, while they look a bit like trees, they are sentient creatures, not plants. According to Tolkien, Ents are among the oldest of the (non-divine) creatures native to Middle Earth. Tom Bombadil, who does not appear in the films, but would've been in the first film had Peter Jackson chosen to include Tom, is the oldest of all. Later came the Ents. Then Elves, dwarves, men, hobbits, etc. Gandalf is one of lesser divine spirits [Maiar] , which is why he could be resurrected by The Valar (the most powerful of the divine), whose power Arwen invokes a couple different times ("May the grace of the Valar protect you" "What grace is given me, let it pass to him [Frodo}]". It's a very detailed and complex world Tolkien created. There's more, lot's more to it, best left for some other time.

Edit: I forgot to mention that you were right about the fact that gandalf seems to somehow control the sunlight. In the last movie whilst fighting the fire demon Barlong, he said that "I am the servant of the secret fire, wielder of the flame of Anor." This is a note to the book where Gandalf actually has one of the three rings of the elves, one with the red stone on it representing the power of fire, but this is generally extended to the Sun as well, probably because he is in fact kind of like an angel. So yes, you were right when you said that he does wield the light of the Sun to shine on the right moment so that the orcs will not point their spears toward the horses. 😍

@@morothane That's because the Secret Fire IS the Imperishable Flame, the power to create and give life, it's simply just another name for the Imperishable Flame, to which only Eru wields. It has nothing to do with Narya. Olórin (Gandalf) is saying to Durin's Bane (a Fallen Maia) that he is a servant of Eru Ilúvatar, and that the Balrog, as a servant of Melkor (Lucifer, and Sauron's master), shall not triumph. Also, when he says "Wielder of the Flame of Anor", he's alluding to Arien, a Maia that was selected by the Valar to be the Guardian of the Sun after the Two Trees's (Telperion and Laurelin) destruction, which is fitting, since Anor in elvish means "Sun". And even though it's unrelated to the topic, Tilion, another Maia, was selected to be the Guardian of the Moon. From the Two Trees themselves, the Sun and the Moon are brought into being by the Valar. Plus, I doubt Durin's Bane even knows of the Rings of Power due to being in isolation for so long. And then, when he calls the Balrog "Flame of Udûn", he's referring to Utumno, Melkor's first and greatest fortress during the Years of the Trees. Utumno literally meaning in Sindarin and Quenya as "Hell" and "Underworld", respectively. Quite fitting, since Utumno was akin to Hell on Arda. This is also meant as a reply to Usagi as well.

I actually love your reaction to this part as well! You did not miss very much this time in terms of lore, so I will not say much but I will say this; In The lord of the Rings universe elves are immortal beings. It is said in the beginning of the first movie when Galadriel narrates the story. So, to put it simply the elf lady who loves aragorn will not die as men will. The elves are leaving middle earth, crossing the sea to the West. If I remember correctly this is a metaphor for heaven or at least a place that resembles heaven where all the past sorrows will eventually fade and life will bloom, everlasting. That is where the elves going and Arwen refuses to follow her father. If she stays with Aragorn, not only will her father never see her again, but Aragorn will die as he is a human, and she will have nothing left. This in fact is a small extract from the actual book narrating their story. As for Wormtongue, he did not flee to Saruman by chance, just to stick by his side. He was sent to Rohan by Saruman in the first place, to help him corrupt the king's mind. Wormtongue as you will see in the third movie actually is from Rohan and once he was a faithful man. That is why when he sees the countless orcs of Saruman's army, he realizes what he has done he has helped destroy his people. As for the part where Aragorn remembers/dreams of Arwen, I think most of it was a memory, but when he floated in the river this was a bit of a vision. Arwen had her thought entirely fixed on him and that is probably why she could help him. This part is not in the books so it does not make that much sense. Legolas safe keeping the jewel and then returning it to Aragorn is also one of my favorite scenes. In the book they knew nothing about one another before the fellowship but it is shown here that they are in fact close friends. It is one of the changes that do make sense because you have to know more about the characters that you are actually going to spend time with rather than characters you will not actually see much of.

Elrond has kind of a history with mortality. He had a brother names Elros. Their mother was an elf and their father was a human named Earendil. Short bit of history: There are these jewels that contain the light of Eru Iluvatar (basically the creator of all things). There's a whole history of this light I won't get into, but this light ended up in these jewels called Silmarils. They were stolen by Saron's old boss, Morgoth. Over time some were recovered and some were lost. Earendil managed to get one back for the good Valar and they took him in his ship with the silmaril that he got and launched him into space to where he and the silmaril became a bright star. The light that Galadriel gave Frodo, which will come into play in the next movie, is the light of Earendil, at least a way of shining it in dark places like a magical flashlight. So the Valar in doing all this has basically granted Earendil immortality after a fashion. This was about 6000 years before the events of the Lord of the Rings. However, Earendil's sons were still half-elf, half-human. They were given a choice to become either elf or human. Elrond chose to become an elf and Elros chose to become a human. Elros became a father of the Dunadain, who were men of long life, and he was the first kind of Numenor whose line would become the kings of Gondor. So Islidur and Aragorn are descendants of Elros. This is why Aragorn lives so long and why Elrond doesn't want to see his daughter become human. He long ago lived through the death of his own brother. Interestingly, while Tolkien paints immortality as a blessing for elves, death is portrayed as a blessing for men. (Dwarves and Hobbits die too.) The book doesn't make this emphasis on Elrond warning Arwen about the sorrow of death. That's only for the movie. But she does become human in the books.

The elves are going to valinor, the land west of the sundering sea and home of the valet, the „gods“ of that universe. It is like heaven, but no one dies going there. In valinor there is no illness and death and the elves, although they came to be in middle earth, were brought to valinor by the valar, so it is their home. The book „the silmarillion“ gives a long, detailed and very bloody history about the elves. I saw a meme once that said the silmarillion could also be called „elves behaving badly“ and it really fits. I liked your reactions very much btw and I’m looking forward to the return of the king! :))

Theoden is the king of Rohan and it was the population of Rohan's capital of Edoras that he led to Helm's Deep seeking refuge. Gandalf left to find and bring back Eomer and his regiment of soldiers - they were the ones that Grima Wormtongue manipulated Theoden into banishing, if you recall. Gondor, on the other hand, is Faramir's home and to which he intended to bring Frodo and the Ring. A kingdom separate from Rohan.

Aragorn is a descendant of Elros, Elrond’s brother. Half Elves were given the choice in a past age to be counted among Men or Elves (mortality or Immortality), Elros chose to be Man. These Men were still gifted with long lives. Also Elves can die from sadness, it’s the downside of being immortal, they can lose the will to live and why mortality is considered a “Gift of Men” It’s also the reason the elves were given rings of power, Sauron promised them that the rings would allow them to maintain their magical kingdoms.

So the woman of Rohan that is into Aragorn is Eowyn. Her brother (banished guy) is Eomir. There is a naming convention used and if you watch multiple times or read the books it will stick out at you. Arwyn is Aragorn’s elf girlfriend. Boromir and Farmir are brothers and sons of Denethor, the steward of Gondor. Aragorn is the heir to the throne of Gondor. But if you look at the male names, they end in -mir and the female names end in -wyn. And if they had mentioned Arwyn’s brothers, I believe they follow the same convention or something similar. I found that subtitles was incredibly useful for movies like this.. when there are a billion different accents, made up languages and names from those fictional languages. I often watch movies with subtitles just because my hearing is a little wonky.. I have had fluid in my ears since I was born and things sound a little different to me. I have to use context to decipher what exactly is said and in real life that’s not a big deal, but in movies it’s detrimental if i can’t follow the story at the proper speed. So just my thoughts. The books are great. Though in this book, the end is actually much later into movie three. I like this cut off for the movie, it feels more appropriate and kinda follows the first ending where they all go their separate ways. Also in the book, the storyline (if i remember correctly) doesn’t bounce back and forth as well as the movie does. It goes through the entire story of Aragorn and his 3 from hunting merry and pippin to the end of helm’s deep almost uninterrupted. Same with the ent storyline. Maybe it just felt that way because there are pages long poems that Treebeard sings to the hobbits and they pass out but he keeps going on and on and on. If you found it at all frustrating in the movie, you have no idea how frustration the book version is. They did a great job of giving you that same feeling of frustration without taking decades to get through it.

Elves are immortal. If they tire of life in Middle-Earth elves can sail west (and only elves can sail west) to the Undying lands of Valinor. The Valar (gods and goddesses of Middle-Earth) also dwell there. If an elf falls in love with a mortal, they are bound to Middle-Earth and become mortal. Before Aragorn and Arwen, there had been only three human-elf couples in history, and they were many thousands of years ago.

There is a huge world building backstory to LOTR. Tolkien's LOTR and the Hobbit, Asimov's Foundation Series and Hebert's Dune are the basis of many modern Sci Fi and Fantasy genre stories. The LOTR movie is a bit off from the books but the changes make sense because you don't have the time to really know the true motivations of the characters and every little moment of story. Tolkien in fact went back and rewrote parts of the Hobbit to line it up with LOTR. What you are really missing is the story of Aragorn and the plight of the Shire. People also are not privy on the importance and the powers of each character. The only reasons the books for LOTR made it out is a story on itself of people pushing and tricking Tolkien to send it to publishers. His son did a good job of gathering his notes to publish all the back story and on reading that book you understand much of why things are happening as they are in the LOTR.

Some other races can do this however it's only the strong of mind, through evolution speaking became the main form of communication. This is a rather confusingly-worded post. By “via the Silmarillion” do you mean that you are referring to information revealed in The Silmarillion? At first, I thought you were talking about Denethor’s palantír, and wondered if you had mistakenly callied it a Silmaril. Your reference to Boromir and Faramir made me second-guess my initial interpretation of your post though. I confess, it has been years since I read The Lord of the Rings and their appendices, or The Silmarillion. Does Tolkien ever discuss a natural telepathic ability in Denethor and his sons, aside from Denethor’s use of the palantír? Some quick book-skimming and wiki-reading reminded me that the brothers had prophetic dreams before Boromir was sent to Rivendell. And also, that Galadriel seemingly does look into Boromir’s mind, along with those of the rest of the Fellowship. However, I can’t recall Boromir or Faramir having any telepathic ability themselves.

Gandalf is a Maia a servant of the Valar the Demi - Gods who helped Eru - Iluvatar (the One God) create and shape the Earth. Maia are lesser spirits who can take on Human form to perform their tasks and Gandalf was sent to fan the flames of freedom in the hearts of Men, Elves, Dwarves and all of the free people of Middle Earth. He was sent with Saruman the White, Radagast the Brown and two Blue Wizards which do not come into this story. The Valar live in Valinor the undying lands across the Sea and have bound themselves to Middle - Earth till the end of time so that the Earth can continue to exist and to fight one of the Valar who turned to Evil: Morgoth. Sauron was a servant (Maia) of Morgoth as was Saruman but had not been corrupted yet.

About Aragorn's age, it's because there was a war a long time ago and the men who helped were given longer lives. Those people lived in Númenor, an island in the middle of the ocean. So...The idea that the ring should go to Gondor to help its people comes from the fact that Gondor borders Mordor. So all the orc armies and other nasties that come out of Mordor have to go through Gondor first. So their armies are the front line against Sauron, and Boromir and Faramir have to lead those armies. They see their soldiers that they know and trust and fight beside dying every day to Sauron's forces. They can literally see the eye from the White City. That's what Boromir meant when he said in Fellowship, "By the blood of our people are your lands kept safe." Returning home with the ring, he thought, would mean that Gondor now had a weapon that could actually give them the advantage and save the lives of many of their soldiers.

Their journey is the most important but the most harrowing since they have the ring in their presence the entire time. I very much prefer the extended editions. Many of the scenes you included in this reaction were extended scenes. Aragorn being 87, the Boromir/Faramir flashback, etc. those were not included in the theatrical cut and they seem so important to the story for me. You're absolutely right and if you actually look closer after he mounts the horse the actor playing Gimly is not the one sitting in front of him! 🤣 However I take it that beyond the fact that it was cool to watch they did it as a nod to The narrative which exists in the book that states that actually elves did not need a saddle or reigns to mount horses, and they were very flexible with them. Still however this makes no sense. 🤣

How can you say what an imaginary creature can or cannot do? Tolkien made it clear that the capabilities of Elves are far beyond those of man. In the books he made it clear that Elves don't sleep, they can walk on top of snow (which is shown in the movie if you watch the movie closely in the mountains), that they can see clearly for miles and can look into the world of both light and shadow (where the One Ring takes Frodo when he puts it on) at the same time. Their aim and agility are beyond legendary. So, hopping on a horse is perfectly within the "reality" of the world that Tolkien created.
@TheUsagiNew.

@@magicbrownie1357 I don't think the comment was meant in a bad way. Of course it is showing that the elves are favored, and that the things they do and the things they do not need to do are far beyond what we have come to consider necessary. It is just a comment on a flip on a horse. I take it that if this was in the book it would have happened because yes legolas was a very skilled ridder, who like all the elves did not really need a saddle or reigns to ride a horse. It just captures you when you read it and when you see it but when you see it for the hundredth time you start to realize that it is not actually accurate to physics even when we put it into token's world. That does not make it a bad shot if anything it's actually one of my favorite shots in the movie. We just comment that it is kind of defying the laws of gravity in a way that it is eye-catching but still very beautiful to look at. 😊

Ents and trees are not the same. Even the awakened trees are not the same as ents. They are distinct. Treebeard is an ent. Old man willow, that tried to eat pippin and merry, is an awakened tree. When treebeard roared, the trees in the distance were moving. He said the trees had business with the orcs, but he had business with isengard. Also, fell beasts are not dragons. Dragons are much much much bigger, and nearly invincible. If you watch the hobbit movies, you'll see a dragon. That first song in the end credits is "gollum's song". In the theatrical edition of the previous movie, you saw galadriel give frodo a light. In the extended edition, she and her husband gave the others gifts also. Rope to sam. A bow to legolas. Cloaks to the hobbits. Daggers to merry and pippin. Yes, aragorn wears a ring that identifies him as the heir of isildur. In the extended edition of the previous movie, galadriel shows frodo that she wears one of the three elven rings.
