I love that you keep bringing up the musical themes. Howard Shore made such masterful use of leitmotifs, (recognizable note patterns) and worked them into the music so that we always know where we are and what the mood of the scene is. I think it's one of the things that made such vast, large-scope movies something we can actually follow. Each of the wizards had a purpose, when you look into the lore. Saruman was positioned to overcome the evil of Sauron, whereas Gandalf was supposed to guide the people and help teach them. When Gandalf took on the role of Gandalf the White and became "Saruman as he should have been," it was him stepping into the role as the one who would lead the fight against evil. Also, just a fun fact, when the flag rips away in the wind in Rohan, that was actually an accident. The winds were so high where they were filming that tons of things went flying, and they happened to catch the flag being torn off. Thank goodness, because that's such a chilling scene. Can't wait for part 2!

Andy Serkis was originally hired to be the voice of Gollum. Then he started acting (in his "gimp suit") along with Elijah and Sean to give them a reference. In the end, they actually redesigned Gollum's character to look more like Andy. It was a massive amount of work, because they had already animated a big chunk of the movie. You can see bits and pieces of the original Gollum in the first movie. Everyone agrees Andy Serkis should have won an Oscar for his work as Gollum, but at the time there wasn't an appropriate category for him to compete in.

@@mazzucac primarily it was mocap for the body movements plus some hand animated motion using Andy Serkis’ performamce as reference. For the facial expressions, that was all hand animated using Andy’s facial expressions and performance as the basis of animation. It was basically a hybrid of traditional key framed animation and mocap. It pushed the technical limits of what could be done at the time.

Gandalf and Saruman are not just old dudes who know magic. They are Maiar, angelic spirits in the forms of old men. They were sent to Middle Earth by the Valar (archangels) to guide and counsel the races of Middle Earth. Sauron is also a corrupted Maia, as was the Balrog. Sauron is of a much higher level of power than either Gandalf or Saruman. Saruman was the one who was allowed to use the most of his angelic power, but he was corrupted by his desire to become as powerful as Sauron, originally because he wanted to have a great power for good to conquer the great power of evil, but the more he studied Sauron, the more he wanted to lead as he did, rather than simply offer wise counsel. Gandalf dying was significant because, his angelic form, named Olorin, originally didn’t want to go to Middle Earth because he was afraid. He had proven to the Valar, in dying to save Middle Earth, that he had conquered his fear, and as Saruman had forsaken his calling, he was resurrected back into his living body and given permission to reveal more of his power, making him the equal of what Saruman had forsaken.

ive read the books through my life alot.. After their fight at the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, Gandalf and the Balrog both fell into the deep chasm nearly 15 miles below the bridge. Gandalf was burned by the Balrog's fire on the way down, then almost froze in the water at the bottom. He pursued his foe for days through dark tunnels, and then all the way up the Endless Stair to the top of Durin's Tower in the living rock of Zirakzigil, where the two engaged in a two-day long battle at the pinnacle of the Silvertine above the clouds. They fought in a narrow space upon Celebdil, above the mists of the world. The sun shone fiercely, but all below was wrapped in cloud, so that anyone watching from below would think they saw flashes from lightning and heard thunder. A great smoke of vapor and steam rose about them, and ice fell like rain. There they fought until at last Gandalf threw down his enemy, and the Balrog broke the mountain-side as it fell. Then darkness took Gandalf, and he passed away. The battle had left Durin's Tower in ruins and caused the destruction of the Endless Stair. The entire battle, from the confrontation on the Bridge of Khazad-dûm to the mutual demise of the Balrog and Gandalf, had taken ten days in the book...after the fight Gandalf's body lay on the peak for nineteen days, until he was resurrected by Eru and sent back to Middle-earth alive to complete his task. For three days he lay in a trance, until he was found by the Windlord Gwaihir lord of the great eagles and carried to Caras Galadhon in Lothlórien, where he was healed and clothed in white, and thus became Gandalf the White, more powerful than ever before. for obvious reasons this would have taken up way too much time in the movie...so we got the condensed version in the movie. the trilogy is absolutely fantastic don't get wrong i really love them all and peter Jackson and the cast did a superb job with howard shore's music...obviously there's way more in the books but that's just the way books to movie form goes.

29:10 The Hunter Valar (archangel/god) is called Oromë. He basically mustered a bunch of wild horses and gave them “dominion” over others. They are called the Mearas. Super fast, long living horses. Shadowfax is a descendant of these horses. Gandalf is given permission to ride this horse. The founder of Rohan, vaguely speaking, is said to also have tamed one of these horses, hence Rohan culture evolves to horse mastery.

Gandalf never "leveled up", but rather became closer to his true essence. He is neither Man nor Elf, but a divine spirit called "maia", who has taken a physical form in the tale. He (and the other wizards, including Saruman) was sent by the Valar (kind of gods of Arda) to oppose the threat of Sauron presented to Middle Earth. Wizards were banned using their full might, and they kind of became mortals (only physically, their spirits are immortal) to better understand and feel compassion for the wearies the mortals needs to endure; fear, sickness, hunger, despair etc. Their physical bodies can be killed, but their true essence cannot die. After Gandalf's "resurrection" this ban was partly lifted upon him, and he became to resemble what he truly is; an angelic, divine spirit of immense power. He is actually of the same ranks as Sauron, the fallen maia.

"Leveled up" seems like a perfectly apt description to me. He was The Gray, then he became The White. Promoted into Saruman's former position. And he didn't remember the name "Gandalf" right away, because that's not his real name. It is just one of a few different names that the people of Middle Earth call him. "Gandalf" means "wand elf" or "elf with a wand or staff" - even though he's not actually an elf. In Gondor and to the elves, he was called "Mithrandir", which means "gray pilgrim" or "gray wanderer". The dwarves called him Tharkun. And his original, Maiar name was Olorin.

Andy Serkis’ story on this trilogy is remarkable. Initially, he thought he would be doing just the voice. Then they had him on set to help with the scenes, essentially what they would do was practice the scene with Andy and then shoot it without him so they could add Gollum digitally. They came to realize both Sean and Elijah (Sam and Frodo) acted better with Andy in the shot so they started doing that which obviously meant having to digitally remove Andy and then add Gollum. They also started using motion capture, a groundbreaking technology at the time. However, Andy had to shoot all his Gollum scenes separately on the motion capture set, on top of his location shooting with Sean and Elijah. Towards the end of the photography they managed to advance the motion capture technology to the point they could capture Andy’s performance while on set with his cast mates, without having him to re-do it separately for mo-cap. So good. The inner dialogue between Gollum and Smeagol you saw in this movie Andy did in one take. What a legend. Great videos! Can’t wait to see the rest of the trilogy.

The wraiths are riding what Tolkien called fell-beasts. Dragons are much different. The water did make Merry and Pippin grow taller. They ended up being taller than almost all hobbits in the Shire. When Sarumon became corrupted he became "of many colors". Basically he corrupted the purity of being the white wizard and the purpose of the white wizard in Middle Earth so Gandalf was sent back to replace him in fulfilling that purpose.

Some background on the Wizards: Before time began, the god Eru iluvatar created immortal spirits called the Ainur, under his guidance they created the world and everything in it. Among the Ainur were the Maiar. The most powerful of the Maiar (Sauron) became corrupted, so 5 other Maiar were sent to Middle Earth to help people resist his influence and took the form of mortal Men, these are the Wizards. The Wizards took on different roles. eg. Saruman the White to be a wise leader, Gandalf the Grey to be a wandering counsellor to the people of Middle Earth. When immortal beings die their spirits go to Valinor (Where Eru iluvatar and the Ainur live) to be judged, some being given a new form. Since Saruman abandoned his purpose for being in Middle Earth, Gandalf was sent back to be his replacement.

Numenor was a great island Kingdom of Men at the Second Age in the mythos. Its first king was a twin-brother of Elrond, the Lord of Rivendel we saw in the first movie. Numenorians were Men, who were granted a prolonged life-span by the Valar, for their services in fighting alongside the Elves against Morgoth, the first Dark Lord (and a boss of Sauron) during the First Age. Sauron eventually corrupted the hearts of Numenoreans from the inside which led to their downfall and sank their island under the sea. Why is this important? Well, the small portion of the Numenorians stayed faithfull to Valar, and as their island sank, they manage to flee to Middle Earth and established an exile-kingdom there (Gondor). Aragorn is descendand of that royal line, and therefore an heir to Gondor. That makes is a very, very, very distant relative of Elrond. Like several millennia in between. Pretty cool, eh?

Smeagol is an ancestor of modern Hobbits. His people lived along the same river that the Fellowship traveled down from Lorien to the falls, except a bit farther north. They migrated west across or around the mountains in about three different groups to the Shire where they live at the time of the movies. Tolkien developed an entire creation account for Middle Earth and wrote several thousand years of history in about three ages. He developed languages, calendars, cultures, and ecologies. The Lord of the Rings takes place at the end of the third age. The Dead Marshes were the battleground of the last alliance when Isildur cast down Sauron and took the ring for himself. It was, by far, not the only battleground. In fact, the entire western lands of Middle Earth, called Beleriand, were destroyed when the Valar themselves came and fought Melkor, also called Morgoth, who was an evil Valar who corrupted Sauron (his chief lieutenant), the orcs, the balrogs, and several other kinds of creatures. So there have been many battles in Middle Earth, some of which have led to significant destruction. The people of Rohan were originally from the North where they encountered Smeagol's people. They are the ones who first called them Hobbits, or Holbytia, which means "hole-buildter". Treebeard didn't know the Hobbits, because they are actually a pretty young race. He has a poem that lists all the races and Hobbit wasn't in the poem. So he had to re-write the poem after meeting Merry and Pippin. Anyway, the people of Rohan came south to help Gondor fight evil invaders from the east, so the steward of Gondor made a pact with them and gave them the lands they now inhabit, which was more room for their horses than they had in the North. In exchange, they had friendship and an alliance for the defense of their combined peoples. There were some wild men further to the west of Rohan and Isengard, some distance south of the shire. These wild men were called the Westrons. They hated Gondor and Rohan and were convinced that they took their land, so it was pretty easy for Saruman to convince them to attack Rohan's west fold, which we see in this movie. There were other evil people to the south and east of Mordor who Sauron had corrupted over the years. These are Easterlings, people from Haran in the south who brought the "Oliphaunts" (the proper name for them is mumakil), and seafaring people who build ships of war call Corsairs. So Gondor and Rohan seem to be well outnumbered by their enemies, ring or not.

As far as we know, Sarumam has never been through being killed and resurrected. Gandalf was a unique case of divine intervention since without his guidance everyone would lose their chances against Sauron. In terms of power, of course, Mayar are not equal (known examples: Wizards, Sauron, Balrogs), but for the Wizards their color-coding serves as job desctiption and\or previous alliances with the deities. Brown Mage is a follower of Yavanna and works with powers of nature, Grey is inspired by Nienna and acts in compassion, White I would attribute less to Aule the Craftsman and more to the symbolism of piercing light that burns the Shadow as the White Wizard is also a Head of the Council and it's his job to coordinate everyone to reach the final victory.

"Why don't they just look for the ring and take it?" Because the Uruk-Hai don't know what they're looking for. Saruman didn't tell them because he didn't want THEM to take it and then not bring it to him. So he told them "One of the halflings carries something of great value to me. Bring them to me alive and unspoiled."

Elvish Rope is somewhat Magical: It holds like welded in place... Until it is no longer needed, then it releases itself... In the books Sam comments that it came free when he tugged on it to say goodbye, as if it knew he called for it. Another magical property is that it will not burn your hands and is almost impssible to break.

Your questions are more than answered here in the comments, but kudos to you for noticing that moment in the mountain crags, when Gollum tries to ambush them to get the ring. The motion capture work is sterling, but you paid attention to that borderline-psychotic longing on Gollum's face when he damn near gets his finger into the ring at long last, it has been a very, VERY long time and its sickening grasp on him is illustrated there, glad you picked up on that.

fun fact - when Viggo Mortensen deflected Lurtz's knife in the first film the prop director had actually messed up and used a genuine uruk-hai head instead of a blunt knife. Viggo hit it so unnecessarily hard that it broke. As revenge, in the second film the prop director replaced the uruk-hai helmet at 18:38 with a genuine knife which cut off 4 of Viggo's toes and caused severe internal bleeding and crippled him permanently. The yell you can hear is Peter Jackson celebrating.

The song Éowyn is singing during the funeral is called "Lament for Théodred," and the language is Rohirric, one of the languages invented by Tolkien for Middle Earth. It translates to this: Now dear Théodred lies in darkness, most loyal of fighters. The sound of the harp shall not wake the warrior; nor shall the man hold a golden wine-cup, nor good hawk swing through the hall, nor the swift horse stamp in the courtyard. An evil death has set forth the noble warrior A song shall sing the sorrowing minstrels of Meduseld That noble cousin, who always held me dear Now is held in darkness, enclosed.

I was so happy to see that you continue with this movie! I did not have the time to comment on your last videos about the first movie but now it is Saturday here and I do have the time so thank you so much for taking the time to react it is brilliant watching you do it! Let me explain a few things which I think it is totally understandable you missed: 1. The kingdoms of Men: there are many races if we could say in middle earth, and the race of men is the one who is going to dwell in middle earth during and after the war of the ring. We have two major kingdoms: Rohan whose main capital is Edoras, and Theoden's palace, which we saw now, is called, Medusselt. And the other Kingdom of men is Gondor, whose main city is Minas Tirith. Minas Morgul (which is where the leader of the black riders dwells) used to be a part of Gondor as well hence the 'Minas' part in the name. However during the last war Mordor spread and claimed the city. You will see it in the other part of this movie and in the third movie. Isildur was the king of Gondor and got the ring from Sauron. His bloodline if you remember from the first movie is bound to the ring. Aragorn is his heir, and that is why in the first movie, when he is talking to Arwen (the elf lady he loves) he tells her that the same weakness runs through his veins. He is a ranger now, for that is the fate of the few who are left dwelling from that bloodline. Dunadain means Man of the West, and he is indeed a king. 2. Gandalf returned: okay so when I was watching the movies from the first time I could not understand what the hell was going on. You do have to know more about the books to understand and to this day I still do not understand exactly. I know that gandalf is like an angel and he pretty much reincarnated after he fought the Barlog. They fell together from that bridge, all the way down down to the deep earth. The dwarfs who built Moria, thought that pit to be bottomless. They had not explored it all and in the depths strange nameless creatures dwelt. Yet the pit has a bottom. It is the lake which we saw. From there the Barlog crawled into strange caves meeting creatures not even sauron had any idea existed. Gandalf had grabbed the Barlog, allowing it to lead him back up to the surface. The demon climbed the many many stairs and so they found themselves on the top of the mountain again. When they did Gandalf fought the demon, and eventually through him on the side of the mountain. Then he kind of died and returned as he is considered as I said sort of an angel. He has been reincarnated as the white wizard. Usually there is only one white wizard. Saruman is no longer the white wizard. He did not die he just left Theoden's mind. 3. Elven Gifts: it is well known that Tolkien build this entire world because he wanted to have a story around the language he had created for the elves. That is why he usually favors them. The rope Sam carries is woven with a certain type of string, and it burns and freezes Gollum. The cloaks are also special. Deep green/ Gray able to provide camouflage to those who wear them. The pins holding the cloaks together are also very strong and cannot really fall off the cloth unless someone takes them out. That is why Frodo was able to camouflage when covering himself and Sam with the cloak. If You observe when gandalf returns he also is wearing this green clock which means he has visited Lorien. In the books he tells the company as much bringing messages about the future to all of them. I hope that you will have a great weekend and I cannot wait to see the rest of your reaction!! 💘

Gollum, of course, doesn't know that Frodo and Sam mean to destroy the Ring. They haven't told him...and the idea that anyone WOULD seek to destroy it wouldn't compute to him - he's far too deeply in thrall to the Ring's power.

The Lord of the Rings is almost a religious story, with a God named Illuvatar and other beings called the Valar. There is a whole book Tolkien wrote on this lore named the Silmarillion. Gandalf and Saruman are beings that are sent to Middle Earth on behalf of the Valar to look after the fortunes of Middle Earth. So when Gandalf did "die" the Gods sent him back, as his fate and quest on Middle Earth had not been fulfilled yet. And by "I am Saruman" he means that now he is "the White" of the wizards which used to be Saruman's role. This means that he is now the head of the order of wizards.

Gandalf and the Balrog fought each other from the caverns deep under Moria up the Endless Stair to the very peak of the mountain. Gandalf (and the other wizards) are basically spirits/angels inhabiting the bodies of old men. The wizards are supposed to assist the Free Peoples in their battles against Sauron and the White Wizard is supposed to lead that effort. Gandalf's body died, but his spirit was sent back in a new body because his job wasn't done yet. He came back as Gandalf the White because Saruman had forfeited his title with his betrayal.

The elvish cloaks were given to all 8 members of the Fellowship who went to Lothlorien. They were said to "shield them from unfriendly eyes." The most obvious place where we see that is when Frodo's cloak makes him and Sam look like a rock, but also when Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli first encounter Éomer and his riders. At first, they were just riding along past them, until Aragorn called out "Riders of Rohan, what news from the Mark?" And they suddenly wheeled around and surrounded them and were, shall we say, less than friendly. That's because the riders can see the whole plains for miles around, so no one should be able to sneak up on them. No one should be able to get that close without them seeing them coming because there's not much cover. But the cloaks hid them until Aragorn called out, which was when they were REALLY close, and that was suspicious as HELL. That's why they're so hostile in that scene.

When Eowyn sings the funeral chant at the funeral for Theodred, the kings son, this is what she is singing; Nú on théostrum licgeth Théodred se léofa hæ´letha holdost. ne sceal hearpan sweg wigend weccean; ne winfæ´t gylden guma sceal healdan, ne god hafoc geond sæ´l swingan, ne se swifta mearh burhstede beatan. Éowyn is only heard singing the last four lines of the song, ending with the word Bealo, Old English, which meant "evil" or "harm". The first of those lines ("Bealocwealm hafað...") originates from the epic Beowulf, line 2265. Now dear Théodred lies in darkness, most loyal of fighters. The sound of the harp shall not wake the warrior; nor shall the man hold a golden wine-cup, nor good hawk swing through the hall, nor the swift horse stamp in the courtyard. The swamp's battle is actually from the war in the prologue of the first movie, yes. If I rembember it right, Legolas' grandfather died in that battle too. Also, Gollum (the name comes from the sounds he makes with its mouth) cannot stomach lembas and the elven rope burns it because they were made by creatures of Good and Gollum's soul is too corrupted to stand it. The amount of facts and details they give in the LOTR movies from the background booklore is astonishing. I love them so much, my favourite movies ever.

Why does everyone always assume it's just a dream at the beginning just because Frodo said so? It was way too specific and awesome to be just a dream. Frodo might have had a vision when he was sleeping of what happened or it's just sort of implied that he dreamt about Gandalf not necessarily the scene we just witnessed. Besides, Frodo is an unreliable narrator because he's a participant in the events.
