I was so glad that PJ filmed that scene from the books and even though it wasn't in the theatrical version, he put it in the Extended Edition. That was such a great moment, when Eomer, who left his sister behind, safe and sound, he thought, and then finds her half-dead on the battlefield.

16:38: So Sam's temptation isn't delved into too deeply in the movie, so please allow me to share what the ring offered him in that moment: "As he stood there, even though the Ring was not on him but hanging by its chain about his neck, he felt himself enlarged, as if he were robed in a huge distorted shadow of himself, and vast and ominous threat halted upon the walls of Mordor..." "Wild fantasies arose in his mind; and he saw Samwise the Strong, Hero of the Age, striding with a flaming sword across the darkened land, and armies flocking to his call as he marched to the overthrow of Barad-dur... He had only to put on the Ring and claim it for his own, and all this could be. " And he laughed at how ridiculous that was and reaffirmed how happy he was to just be working his own little garden.

Anyone who touches a Ringwraith falls under "The Black Breath" an illness that shuts your mind down first--into nightmares-- and then your body dies some time after. But in the books the line "The hands of a king are the hands of a healer" portends the coming of Aragorn, and through his use of ethalas (the weed Sam helped find for Frodo in the forest in the first film) and his kingly hands, Aragorn calls Eowyn and Merry back from the The Black Sleep and they are healed.

@Gerald H Eowyn’s sword wasn’t normal either, though. Her sword is a somewhat-diminished version of the royal sword of Rohan, which helped restore strength to Theoden when Gandalf dispelled Saruman’s control. In the books, Grima had hidden it away to make controlling Theoden’s mind easier. So Eowyn’s victory was a convergence of circumstances, driven in a way by prophecy- the Witch-King of Angmar who no man (or Man?) could kill, stabbed by a Hobbit with a weapon designed specifically to harm beings like him, then finished by a woman wielding a magic sword of her own. Pretty awesome stuff!

Elrond and Galadriel were bearers of the two Elven Rings of Power. These were the artifacts created with powers of restoration, protection and preservation. Through these Rings, they were able to stop the corruption of time in their realms, in a memory of Undying Lands kind of. Unfortunately, those Rings were still bound to the fate of One Ring, meaning they lost their powers as the One Ring was destroyed. That was a final blow for the most of the Eldar, and seeing the Age of Men sweeping in and their time in Middle Earth coming to an end, they sailed to the Undying Lands where they truly could live in eternal bliss.

"She just finishes him with that line" There's actually a really cool dialog in the books, but it would have killed the pacing of the movie. I think the one-liner works really well for the movie. But as a kid, I used to recite her speech from the book with a little toy sword ❤

It's also worth noting that in the books, the dagger Merry stabs the Witch-king with is an extremely special one, crafted in the Third Age not just to be used in the wars against Angmar (where the Witch-king is from), but literally enchanted by its weaponsmith specifically to harm the Witch-king; it was given to him by Tom Bombadil after he rescued Merry and the other hobbits from a barrow-wight residing in the barrows where the weapon was found, and it's a "coincidence" (set up by Eru Ilúvatar, i.e. "God", no doubt) that this is the dagger he ends up using in that particular fight.

Frodo had to leave Middle Earth because he would never have been completely healed of his wounds while he remained there. He and Bilbo were permitted to enter Valinor, the Undying Lands, because they had been Ringbearers. One thing that's changed from the book is Denethor isn't as ill prepared and "we're all doomed" as in the film. He's actually sent most of the women and children away and called in forces from surrounding areas by lighting the beacons. The beacons aren't used to summon aid from Rohan but from within Gondor. Riders are sent out to ask Rohan for aid only to find that they were already preparing to come anyway, thanks to Gandalf. None of them make it back though, so he thinks Rohan isn't coming.

Re: Eowyn and Merry being critically wounded by merely stabbing the Lord of the Nazgul: The Nazgul were such a corrupted form of “life,” infused also with Sauron’s unholy spirit via the Nine Rings for Mortal Men, that their very presence was horrifying and could be lethal to living things. They were “unlife.” They were to life similar to how antimatter is to matter. Not that living things would blow up in their presence! But living things would try like hell to put distance between themselves and a Nazgul. Remember in “Fellowship” when the 4 hobbits were hiding in a tree hollow and the horse-mounted Nazgul dismounts and leans over the edge of the hollow in an effort to find them? Remember how a spider then crawls out of the tree onto one of the hobbits’ shoulders to flee, and a centipede crawls swiftly away, and earthworms try to quickly burrow themselves into the ground to get away? Remember the guard dog of one of the farmer hobbits that first barks ferociously at a Nazgul but then quickly becomes afraid and backs off with a whimper into the hobbit house? The very PRESENCE of a Nazgul was abhorrent to living things, and an abomination to nature itself. Their shrieks could be heard physically, but, when close by, they were heard also INSIDE the mind and could not be muffled as they shredded conscious thought. This is why both Merry and Eowyn nearly died even as they victoriously attacked the Lord of the Nazgul. The Nazgul are truly some of the most terrifying things ever conceived in fiction.

Frodo leaves because the experience he went through was so extreme that changed him forever, and he could never go back to his old life again. This is something that happens in real life to people who go through extreme or traumatic experiences, like soldiers who come back from the war, survivors from the Holocaust, people who are saved or found after a long time of being lost. They can't go back to their lives anymore. There's the famous case of Robin Lee Graham, the kid who went sailing on his own and after returning home from 5 years of being alone in the sea he went to live in the forest, because he couldn't go back to his old life. That's what happened to Frodo, he returned, but a part of himself never left Mordor. So he can't keep living a mormal life after what he went through.

I feel these days that it's best to watch the movies first and then read the books, so that should be good for you. This way you will get additional material from the books rather than feel that the movies are missing parts. They did a great job pulling out key moments and themes from the books to keep the same overall theme even though some material had to be trimmed. Unlike the Hobbit films they didn't add too much to this story, but they did consolidate a few characters and simplify some bits, and move things around. I read the books some 40 years ago, so I knew who lived and died, but they still managed to keep it pretty exiting with a few changes here and there.

23:29 Funny thought; it's not talked about very often, but the reason Gollum fell into the lava at Mount Doom was through literal divine intervention. Only 4 times in the history of Arda, the world on which Middle Earth exists, has Eru, the supreme being and equivalent to the Christian God, intervened. The first time was the Awakening of the Elves at Cuivienen during the Years of the Trees. The second was with the Awakening of Men at Hildorien at the first rising of the Sun. The third, and until the final moment, the most drastic, was the Breaking of the World in the 2nd Age. He caused the Earth to take a round shape, drowned Numenor, and put the Undying Lands "outside the spheres of the Earth". After this change, were anyone to sail west without particular dispensation, they'd just end up sailing around to the eastern side of the continent. The fourth and last was the first mentioned. He caused Gollum to trip and fall at JUST the right moment.

The scene with the ring in the lava but not melting is very powerfull. When the words appear it's calling for Frodo, for he was the last chance for the Ring to survive. But the moment Frodo took Sam's hand, the Ring knew that it was not being saved, so it was destroyed. Again, way to show how that thing was alive just with those images. Amazing.

Elves are immoral and live forever. In one of Tolkien's may letters on the Lord Of The Rings he wrote "Elves do not die of natural causes. They do die because of poison, fire, injuries, etc., (unnatural death). Even so, they do not truly die. They go to the Halls of the Dead in Valinor and are reborn." I'm paraphrasing here but the fact still remains. Tolkien wrote many many other books on Middle-Earth and how thing work and the history of you're interested "The Silmarillion" is a very fascinating read.

Another thing that was changed from the books: the Army of the Dead in the books were completely incorporeal, they could not touch anyone at all, their contribution was rather one of spreading fear and terror among the enemy ranks; in the movies they are somewhat overpowered, as many have recognized, since they can slaughter everyone while being untouchable.

That is not a butterfly that comes to Gandalf, it is a moth, and it whispers to Gandalf. The Undying Lands (Valinor) is Heaven for the Elfs. Many years later Samwise Gamgee is invited to visit Frodo there, even though he was not a Ring Bearer, but he carried Fordo to help him to destroy the ring. Legolas stayed in Middle Earth for quite some time before going to the Undying Lands. And later on he invited Gimli to stay there. No other Dwarf has ever been there. The Undying lands is really skipped over a lot in the movie. The quick simple need to know thing, is that it was the last place the Gods of Middle Earth last stood, and it's where they blessed the Elves with Immortality. Due to their long visit there, the Islands of the Undying Lands are a very blissful place, any who suffer from physical or mental wounds don't feel the pain as much any more. It would be the only place Frodo would ever feel peace and no longer feel the pain of the Nazgul blade, and Frodo's was not the last boat. Eventually all but Merry Pippen and Aragorn would go there to pass peacefully in their last days. Aragorn died in Gondor, passing his crown and his sword to his first born, a son. And Merry and Pippen had been out visiting the places they had previously been when they decided to stay during Aragorn's last days. And they too would pass there within a year, all 3 in the tomb of Kings, the Hobbits beside their friend in the end.

Well, if you want to read the books and don't care about the stuff not in the movie being spoiled, the end is very different as far as details. If you want to know, see below Frodo IS going to drop the ring into the fires of Mount Doom, but Gollum jumps him and bites off his finger, like the movie there, but in his glee he slips and falls into the fires himself .. with the ring. Frodo didn't throw him down there. (Thus, he really does never kill anyone) Also Frodo didn't solve the riddle at the entrance to Moria, like in the movie. And of course it wasn't Arwen who took Frodo across the river then made the river take the Nazgul. In the book, Elrond, who was up on a cliff above, made the river run and Gandalf added horse heads to the water for flair. (or the other way around? It's been 20 years lol)

The books are almost different stories from the movie. The movies are a good interpretation. In the books you get more of a sense that it is a long journey and you run into more characters like a Tom Bombadil and you get a story about Bill the pony. The time in the mines is much longer. The major story changes are Saruman and his fate. The end to the battle of Helms Deep is different because Saruman gets away and he has a story in the Shire as war comes to the Shire. The biggest change to me is Aragorn. He travels with a company of about 200 or 300 men and elves if I remember correctly. Plus he is always accompanied by the sons of Elrond. His motivation is far different. He wants to be king so he can win the favor of Elrond to marry his daughter. The movie tends to give the female characters more time because lets face it Tolkien is from a different era and storytelling was just not as diverse. As a matter of fact this is something C.S. Lewis has commented on in his forever disagreements with his good friend Tolkien. In the end the books have so much more story and makes the entire thing more complex. The world building is much better in the books. The movies are an up to date popular consumption material that is a great introduction into the world of Tolkien. The books are great allegories on a Europe that is in the middle of surviving two major wars and the beginnings of modern industry and that conflict with the old simple ways of living. Tolkien tried to write a follow up to LoTR but it because too dark and he just gave up. There are some good notes on it and you can find out what happened to the character of LoTRs after the war of the ring. The Silmarillion is a good source to understand the world of Tolken but that is not an easy read but more a collection of notes put together by his son in story form that was honestly not meant to be published but ends up being a fun read.

They all pass through the Paths of the Dead together with Legolas and Gimli. Actually, I prefer the book version of that journey to the film version. Makes the dead seem a lot more terrifying.

The Rangers were pretty scattered and tended to travel alone or in groups of 2 or 3. They only really came together when Aragorn was about to enter Gondor and even then could only muster about 30 men initially. They definitely didn't travel in a group of two to three hundred. Though there may have been that many in total.

The Silmarillion was largely finished. It's what Tolkien submitted to his publisher, as a follow-up to The Hobbit. It was edited by his son and a few additions were made but the vast majority of it was as written by Tolkien. When I first read the Silmarillion, I was too young to fully appreciate it. I read it again, in my twenties, and loved it! It's a very different style to The Hobbit and The LOTR, closer in style to the Norse Sagas or the Anglo-Saxon epics. It's definitely not character driven and takes a little getting used to but it's definitely worth it! :)

Bilbo actually wrote "The Hobbit", which is about how Galndalf sent him on an adventure long ago, which is where he first found the ring. Frodo's story was "The Lord Of the Rings", which is all three movies that you watched. The Hobbit is another movie.

The scene is more complicated in Tolkien's original version: The title page had many titles on it, crossed out one after another, so My Diary. My Unexpected Journey. There and Back Again. And What Happened After. Adventures of Five Hobbits. The Tale of the Great Ring, compiled by Bilbo Baggins from his own observations and the accounts of his friends. What we did in the War of the Ring. Here Bilbo's hand ended and Frodo had written: THE DOWNFALL OF THE LORD OF THE RINGS AND THE RETURN OF THE KING (as seen by the Little People, being the memoirs of Bilbo and Frodo of the Shire, supplemented by the accounts of their friends and the learning of the Wise.) Together with extracts from Books of Lore translated by Bilbo in Rivendell.

I remember seeing Elijah Wood tell a story one time about what happened at the premier of this film. After the film ended he was in the lobby and he sees Jack Nicholson and Nicholson smiles and says "Hey, kid!" So Elijah walks over and they say hello and what not, and Nicholson goes, "so what the hell was that about?" and Elijah says, "Well, I think the getting on a ship and sailing away is supposed to be a metaphor for dying and going to Heaven" and Nicholson says, "What? No, I was talking about the whole movie. I walked out after the first hour. I didn't know what was going on."

It’s prob been said a million times here, but in the book, when Frodo,got back, he was a little off after his quest/adventure, a little,sick in the head and was suffering, and nit just form the stab wound.....also, all ring bearers have the honor of going to the undying lands...so there’s many reasons Frodo left, for relief from his mental state, and his status as a ring bearer....but, Sam, albeit briefly, was also a ring bearer, and after a long life with his family, living in peace, in the books, he also eventually went to the undying lands and was reunited with Frodo

I love these movies (almost as much as I love Tolkien’s books……almost). The extended editions add a lot of smaller bits and pieces that don’t really effect the overall story, but are still very cool, like finding out Aragorn’s age, seeing the relationship between Boromir, Faramir and Denathor, but nothing that was essential to the story of Frodo and the Ring. That’s why Peter Jackson could cut those scenes out and it didn’t effect the films he released in the cinemas. Something I have which I love just as much as the extended editions is the Complete Recordings cds, Howard Shore’s entire score on 3 cds with a bonus blu ray about the recording process. They did one for each movie.

The main thing for me re: book vs. film is that Faramir was not so conflicted and he never took Frodo and Sam to Osgiliath. When the Nazgul confronted Frodo, I almost walked out. Also, Aragorn is much more determined in the book. The sword is reforged in Rivendell. The finding of the Ring is something he has been waiting for all his life and he goes south determined to take the throne. His conflict comes in whether he should go to Mordor to help Frodo but circumstances make his decision for him.

@andycofin6983
@andycofin6983 2 года назад
I think that most people, being caught up in the fights with Smegol/ Gollum, forget that Gandalf said that he felt that Gollum had a purpose in all this. If they had killed Gollum, he wouldn’t had been there to take the ring from Frodo. Only the ring bearer could destroy the ring, which is why Elrond didn’t kill Isildur and destroy the ring himself. It’s why Sam didn’t fight Frodo for it. And why in the book, Gollum slipped and fell to his death into the river of lava, and didn’t fight Frodo, like they did in the movie.
@kateiannacone2698
@kateiannacone2698 2 года назад
@@andycofin6983 I saw some interviews, and the reason they had Frodo fight Gollum for it is because they wanted to give Frodo a little more agency in the climax. The ring sits on top of the lava and isn't destroyed until Frodo takes Sam's hand because they wanted it to be in that moment when Frodo made a choice - to hold on to what is good in the world. Because those are "the stories that really mattered." He chose hope, friendship, and life, despite how easy it would be to just let go and end all that pain. And that's what made the difference between Frodo and Gollum. Well...part of it, anyway. There are a lot of things that made a difference between the two, but you know what I mean.

Sauron got his finger cut off. Frodo got his finger bitten off. Frodo saved Sam from the river. Sam saved Frodo from the cliff. There's a literary word for that but can't remember. -- From the book, when Sam wakes up: “Gandalf! I thought you were dead! But then I thought I was dead myself. Is everything sad going to come untrue? What's happened to the world?" "A great Shadow has departed," said Gandalf, and then he laughed and the sound was like music, or like water in a parched land; and as he listened the thought came to Sam that he had not heard laughter, the pure sound of merriment, for days upon days without count.”

Striking a Nazgul results in grievous injury to the striker due to their fell nature...usually resulting in death. There are some who possess healing powers sufficient to save those so injured. Remember Elrond nursing Frodo back to health at Rivendell? That was different, of course, in that Frodo was stabbed rather than doing the stabbing but usual outcomes are similar.

I suggest reading the Silmarillion, where it explains how each creature came to be, Saruman, Gandalf, Sauron and the Balrog were all originally lesser gods named Maiars, that were servants of the Valar the Highers Gods, in turn created by the One Almighty god, Eru. There you will understand the time line when the Great Enemy Morgoth created the Orcs corrupting the black elfs, and Dragon to stand against Manwe's Eagles (King of the Valar), Trolls were the Ents adversaries, and then moratal men were created by Eru much later.

Technically Aragorn and Arwen’s children are around 1/3 Elf, since Arwen is only half Elf on her fathers side. I’m pretty sure that they are still considered mortal Men, since Arwen took advantage of her birthright from her father and chose to be mortal. (Elrond was one of the half Elves in a past age who were given the choice to be Elf or Men, which also applies to their descendants. Elrond chose to be Elf so his children were Elves, Arwen chose to be Mortal so her children will be Men. They may have the same birthright but I’m unsure, nevertheless they live for a long time being descended from an Elf and a Dunedain; Men gifted with long lives since they’re descendants of half Elves)

@Gerald H Also they are part Maiar, Mother of Lúthien was Melian (Maiar). "Eldarion was born in the first year of the Fourth Age. He did not inherit the choice of becoming an Elf, but had a long youth like one, having an appeareance of 20 years old until 60. " He lived 220 years. He had elven blood but only efect it had on his lifespan. Tolkien mentioned the existence of descendants, about whom little is known save that their lifespans eventually dwindled to a normal human length.

A cool part of the lore that isn't explored in the movies very much is the backstory & fate of Nùmenor, i.e. the principle kingdom that originated Aragorn's people, and "The Gift" of Men (i.e. permanent death & the uncertainty of what happens next for Men). The fear of death is essentially what drives men to be ambitious and innovative in life & different from elves -- to take & use power (like The One Ring) and to try to escape their unknown fate. Knowing this, it makes the "Death!" chant of the Rohirrim and other times when men die quite poignant & contrasts when elves die (like when Haldir dies in the 2nd movie -- you hear the elven music almost calling to him as he will, presumably, be reborn in the Undying Lands). It makes Arwen's choice very significant. Some related scenes include Eowyn's Dream where she experiences & describes the last moments of Nùmenor; Theoden's son's funeral; Boromir's death; Gandalf describing his death & rebirth; Theoden's death. Thanks for your reaction. It was quite thoughtful.

Great reactions! I highly recommend reading the books, because there's a lot more detail in there. Whole new characters that were left out of the movies. If they included them all, the movies would be twice as long at least. Start with the book of The Hobbit - it's shorter, and an easier read, giving the backstory of Bilbo and the finding of the ring. Then read LotR. Some of the confusing parts from the movies are made clearer, and explained more fully.

lotta people don't realize, if frodo, Hadn't of put the ring on, the nazgul would have killed aragorn and the army, but when frodo did, Sauron's army was without a leader, because all his attention was drawn away to frodo. ultimately no one could carry the ring, not even frodo, but as gandalf said in moria, there are other powers at work in the world besides the will of evil, I wish that was more portrayed in the film, but oh well.

I mean, we see it just get yanked off more than once in the movies... But in the book, Sam has a little more time to wrestle with the decision. He swore not to leave Frodo (Gollum doesn't turn Frodo against him in the books), but now Frodo is dead, and someone still has to destroy the ring. He can't just drag Frodo's body all the way to Mount Doom. So he takes the ring, intending to come back for Frodo, but then after traveling a bit, realizes he made a mistake and goes back to find the orcs there. And that's when he overhears the "not dead" bit, and he blames himself for Frodo's capture because he was never supposed to leave his side.

JRR Tolkien made it clear the long bottom leaf was not marijuana. Everyone assumes that, there has been a new phrase lately called 'presentism'. So much error in viewing things hundreds of years ago through the lenses of 2022 rather that just taking things for what they were in that time. This happens as well about American History. We have to understand and view it through the mindset of the day in which we are looking. Eowyn was Theodens niece, not his daughter.

Read the book/s and see what changed. There were changes but the fundamental story remained true to the author's intent. The books build a world that has history and untold heroic stories from which to draw and whose content is alluded to in the Lord of the Rings. There is goodness and truth as well as values present in the world that is built but it is the reader's job to discern them and learn them. There's evil and it too has a history and stories that are untold but are alluded to in the Lord of the Rings. Even the evil beings have a story and not everything is black and white simplicity - as is seen in the story of Smeagol/Gollum. It's the world building that makes the book so enduring in English literature, it is similar in that quality to Shakespeare's plays which tell a story that is set in a world that has history and myths.
