A sub goal was reached, so on 8/1/19 we began watching the documentary. This will be broken into a few parts, with the 3rd and 4th(?) parts going up on Monday or so. Hope you enjoy =) -- Watch live at / ppmd #PPMD #smashbros #anime
The transition from the melee opening cinematic theme to the Smash Brothers doc theme is one of my favorite parts of the whole thing. Such a perfect intro
Samox has been working on a second Smash documentary since the release of the first one and it may be coming out on the near future! Check his Twitter account. @_samox_
when i saw this thumbnail, i jumped on my mouse and now im too hype for this, gonna get me a beer and have an hour with my bro PPMD. Today was a good day.
i think people would recognize fox, i mean star fox was one of the first 3d games ever created, i feel like that deserves some recognition edit: japan never really slowed down, they just didnt have a "community split" after brawl came out, and just kept moving on like most scenes, that's why they were strong in brawl (otorio being almost as good as m2k) smash4 and even ultimate now while there isnt much of a scene in melee there now, they just left it behind.
The funniest part about this 8:04 is that Wavedashing is insurmountably serious degrees more important in Melee than it has been in Tekken in a long time. In high level tournaments, Wavedashing is important, but it's gonna get you beat up if you just do it. You're going to have to seriously condition your opponent to turtle up and get them to respect the gained ground with a Wavedash. And in Tekken, you can't Wavedash backwards. Melee may have stolen the name, and the aspect of your dash looking like a Wave is more apt in Tekken, but in Melee, it is *Several* degrees more important by a wide margin because it can be used in all aspects of the game. Where as Wavedashing in Tekken is pretty much exclusive to style, hard reads, conditioning, realignment (Because of sidestep 3D game blahblahblah) and forward movement. *SOME* combos are exclusive to Wavedashing (Main example being the nerf to Jin's teep or counterhit push kick) but in Melee it's a lot broader and more powerful of an option. I much prefer playing Tekken, and like it way more, but Melee is very cool and I still like it and it's history.
Wait, how did it take so long for players to learn about DI? I found out about DI by myself playing against my friends, probably by trying to buffer the direction of my jump. Amongst my friends there was a running joke that my 200 percent was everyone else's 100 percent. Of course, none of us knew about any other tech whatsoever.
It's seriously insulting pp was not mentioned more in this documentary. Why wasn't he talked about extensively like all the other gods? What a load of crap
I was kind of sad about it too initially honestly. But at the time the old school legends were more hyped up and important than I was in a way, so it made sense to focus on them. Luckily I get my own shot in the next one!
Its kinda ridiculous how everyone is fearing certain words to be heard, #triggerwarning much? What about watching things in their given context? The whole world suddenly got a lot more sensitive to everything, like dont say anyone that could trigger someone else.... I understand rape isnt the greatest analogy for beating someone really badly in a game but its also super super far away from the actual act of raping someone. Its an obvious analogy. Im personally triggered when people use the term 4 stocked, cause i encountered a serious trauma in my childhood that is connected to that term, everyone please cater to my personal feelings and get this term banned, its super insensitive to all the people that got 4 stocked, this verbal violence has to stop :D like thats the direction we are moving in
Metaphors arent just words replacing each others. A metaphor establishes relations and similarities between concepts, even if the realities those concepts refer to dont share anything. Our brain functions a lot in terms of metaphors, and our societies do too. The most common example is "money is time". Its a very deep metaphor that allows our economic system to work. Its the relation behind why we get paid by the hour, and not by the work we do. Its also why we have "free time", time not spent making money/working. Both this things are very deep in our minds and its difficult trying to think about the world in a different way. "Up is good", "down is bad", are also examples of this. In the case of "Beating someone up is raping him", this works because of dominance and submission. Raping in a videogame means you assert your dominance over the player you beat, he has to play to your pace and flow, you determine the match. Theres a deeper metaphor behind "raping is beating up in a game". "Rape is dominance", "rape is power". Rape is both a physical and psycological act, and this metaphor plays a very big role in this. If you only want to fuck, you pay a prostitute, dont rape anybody. If you read or hear any testimonies from rapists who are/were in prison, this is really what they are after. Its not only fucking, its dominance what they want; they want to break the submissive persons mentality and emotional stability. This is really, really nasty, and fucked up. And smaller metaphors like "rape-beating in a videogame", contain in itself the deeper oned like "rape is power", and reproduce its contents. And you think peolple getting sensitive with this is a bad thing? Man. What the fuck. Please, reconsider how awful this is. You dont have to be this big of a piece of shit.
While I agree that people are too sensitive these days and need to learn to take a joke, your comparison of rape and getting four stocked as equal offensive terms is outright laughable. As if rape (in a joking sense or not) is at all comparable to getting four stocked. (Losing badly in Smash Bros, aka losing in a video game badly.) If you're going to argue, at least have the common sense to present arguments that aren't complete garabge.
