We don't preach safety to be boring, but because it's the day you stop thinking about it that you wish you hadn't! We need reminders ourselves to be as safe as we can on our machines, and today's video is one heck of a reminder of that.

Good Works Tractors is happy to be sponsored by Rim Guard Solutions! This is perhaps the most well-known ballast brand on the market today. Rim Guard goes right inside your tires, so it's out of the way, it doesn't freeze, and doesn't corrode. It's made from natural materials, so it's safe around livestock and pets if it spills out. Rim Guard liquid ballast adds more weight to the back side of your tractor improving stability, loader performance, and power to the ground. Find your closest dealer at bit.ly/3d0whX0

Fractured my hip and broke 4 ribs this summer on a zero turn rollover. My first time on one, I was asked to show the homeowner how to operate it. Grass was wet, on a sloping lawn. I lost control, went backwards down an embankment, and had it roll over on me. No ROPS or seat belt. 4 screws and a plate in my hip holding it all together. Be safe out there, it can turn bad in a heart beat.

Courtney , thank you. We need to be continually reminded of just how easily things can go horribly wrong. As a relatively new tractor owner, much of my learning has been through RU-vid. You mention the importance of ballast in every one of your videos. As a result, I now have fluid in my rear tires to lower my center of gravity. Big improvement in the feel of the tractor. Wheel spacers are next. Glad this incident had a happy ending. Take care, Ben

I purchased my very first Toro Commercial grade zero-turn mower this past May and I will say it's quite the learning experience going from a garden tractor to a zero-turn. I have over 40% grade hills on my 20 acres especially right behind the house and it's impossible to mow it now using a zero-turn since I have to mow it from side to side as there is no room to turn around at the base of the hill with my house being right there. I kept forgetting it has no front steering nor brakes which made for some interesting scenarios until I got used to it. The yikes factor was on a scale of 11 out of 10 for the first few times mowing. I always keep the ROPS up and my seat belt fastened. Safety first since I'm almost 70 and live alone in a very rural area of northern Vermont. Thanks for the vid. Cheers!

40 degrees is pretty steep. Are the hills really that steep? A normal tractor would be difficult to operate safely on such a slope.
@TheFlatlander440
@TheFlatlander440 6 месяцев назад
@@kdegraa My homestead of 20 acres is located on the side of a very large hill (small mountain) and yes, the ground directly behind my home is at a 40% grade which is indeed steep. I was able to mow it side to side with my Cub Cadet garden tractor, very carefully mind you. Going up and down the grade is not possible due to the close proximity to the house where it levels off at the bottom. At my age, mowing it with a push mower is out of the question. My Cub Cadet XT-2 is only used for blowing snow since it no longer can climb the hills. I think it's a transmission issue and it's 7 years old. I am still in the market for a compact tractor when I can put aside enough money to pay cash for it.

Fellow Vermonter here. We have some significant hills as well and I refused to buy a zero turn. Since the front wheels are just casters, they provide no directional stability. You are betting your life on those small rear tire contact patches. Please change those steep hills to ivy or similar ground cover or decorative rock or something other than grass. Make mowing an enjoyable task, not something that can kill you.
@TheFlatlander440
@TheFlatlander440 6 месяцев назад
@@qcan8468 I would really like to have a retaining wall built there however, being on a fixed income and retired it's out of the question. Heck, I still want to purchase a compact tractor first. I used to mow it with the Cub Cadet and it worked pretty darn good as long as the grass was completely dry. I tried it with the zero-turn ONCE and almost rammed into my enclose deck, lol. I just let it grow out this past Summer and that's how is remains today, unmowed.

@@TheFlatlander440 from the description of your land, is your alias wishful thinking? My farm has maximum slope of around 18 degrees. This is steep enough for me. There is a little flat land too. I have a macadamia tree orchard on it. The slopes are good in some way but I’d prefer it if was flat. However what can you do but get suitable equipment. A machine is cheaper than land.

That wasn’t the usual outcome for situations like that. A few years ago a guy in our area nearly drowned in 6 or 8 inches of water in the bottom of a ditch when he rolled a small tractor with the rops folded down. The pregnant wife saw everything and was on the phone and screaming for trying to push the tractor off her husband. She did get people over there and they got the tractor off just as the fire department arrived. He wasn’t breathing when they loaded him into the ambulance. He lived but was in the hospital for weeks. Doctors weren’t sure if he would recover 100%. Young couple just starting out in life.

GREAT video!! Thank you for taking the time to talk to your audience about the importance of safety. Your wheel ballast should be stock equipment on all tractors, and I personally feel manufacturers are doing a disservice by not properly balancing these tractors.

This strikes a chord. I traded mowing with a zero radius turn mower for a better boarding rate for my horses. Some of the mowing was along irrigation ditches. I had some close calls, too close for comfort. I'm grateful that I no longer mow those ditch banks.

I worked for a country club, with my dad, for years. Dad rolled a mower into the one shallow spot in the ponds. From then on, we unbuckled our seat belts on those particular banks, because you'd be tied to a sinking mower with at least 18ft of water to fall through. Be Safe yall!

In September 2020 I had a fawn run out from a thicket, in front of me while heading down a steep hill with a trailer in tow. I instinctively jerked the wheel to the right and over we went, with the trailer shoving us 15 yards down the hill on its side. My shoulder still hurts from that. My uncle had the momentum from a bushhog shove his old Ford through a fence and to a 45 degree angle. It didn't have ROPS, but a rear wheel hit a fence post, keeping it from tipping further. When things go wrong it tends to happen quickly. Be careful folks and have your ROPS up as much as possible.

This is definitely a video that needs to be shared far and wide. Someone from my hometown was killed in the last year, similar situation. Mowing around a pond with a zero turn, it rolled over and the way it rolled killed him almost instantly. Growing up mowing, garden tractor and not a zero turn though, my granddad (old school heavy equipment operator) hammered safety around slopes and water into us. One of many equipment lessons that I’m thankful for and that sticks with me to this day.

Always use your ROPS if you have one and have the clearance to use it. If you are a new owner with a tractor, carry the load low to the ground, never up in the air. The higher the load is, the more tippy the tractor is. 🚜 Avoid driving sideways across hills. If you're on a zero turn, and there's any thought in your mind that it looks to steep, but it has to be mowed, drive straight down the hill nose first and then back straight up. Move over in the safe area and repeat. It will take a little longer but you won't be dead. Be safe out there.

I wish more zero turn manufacturers would do what cub cadet did and make more of the mowers available with a steering wheel instead of the two levers.Tthe levers work and they say, i would love them if i got used to them,they say....But why reinvent the wheel if that is what we are used to?.... I will buy a sub compact tractor with a mowing deck, when I am able to get a new mower simply because of the steering wheel and the versatility.....plus the good ones pretty much cost the same and have way more versatility anyway.......I think the rollover proterction system on anything is only as good as the operator....if you do not wear your seatbelt the rops wont help the operator much.....the excuse is always i want to be able to jump off if i get in trouble.....

Hello Courtney !!!! I am writing to you - I do not know if you could help me or not ???? I bought a used 2005 John Deere GT 245 - lawn tractor - about two years ago - from a John Deere dealer !!!!! And I have been working with another John Deere - closer to where I live at now - I tried to see about getting an new mower deck for my lawn tractor !!!! But - according to this John Deere dealer - John Deere does no longer make replacement mower decks - for my 2005 John Deere GT 245 lawn tractor !!!! So, If you have an suggestion to help me - it would be greatly appreciated by me !!!! The mower deck has a couple of small holes in it - and I was thinking about having theses holes welded shut on the outside of the mower deck - that is why I was trying to replace this mower deck - but I guess I will have to get some help to remove this mower deck and find a good welding shop - to weld the holes on the mower deck for me !!! Thank you Courtney !!!! I am at stage 5 kidney failure now - according to me kidney doctor for now !!!! Please lift me up in your prayers - Courtney !!!!

Not sure how much a roll bar would help in a rollover in pond mud. Seems like it would be too narrow and just sink into the mud. Best to avoid the situation This is not saying to not use the ROPS. Just one of those "hadn't thought about that" situations.
@PurpleNovember
@PurpleNovember 6 месяцев назад
It probably would sink in the mud but hopefully give the operator enough time to escape In situations like that in the past I would have the seat slid back and no seatbelt. I’m not in my early teens anymore so I’m no longer in those situations.
