Discussion about water in fuel contamination. Symptoms, sources and solutions including an old truckers' trick. Plus a demo of Kolor Kut water finding paste. #mechanic #fuel #troubleshooting
Transcript provided for the hearing impaired:
Alright, so today on Repairs101 I thought I'd talk to you a little bit about getting water in your fuel. It's a problem that almost everybody is going to come in contact with one time or another in their lives... or at least so they'll be told. I'll go through some of the symptoms, I'll talk about some of the misconceptions, talk about some of the possible sources -- how did the water get into your fuel in the first place? I'll talk about an old trucker's trick people use as well as what really should be done from a mechanic's perspective today on Repairs101 I thought I'd like to talk about getting water in your fuel. Some people will say that there's bad fuel or water in the gas when they really don't know what's wrong with your vehicle. Often times it has nothing to do with water in the fuel it's just a misdiagnosis. It's become like the way in the Second World War they used to say gremlins were at work or there was a ghost in the machine. OK so symptoms of water in your fuel are going to be things like shaking, a loss of power, missing. Things like rough idle. I found that Outboards, when they have water in their fuel, sometimes the engine will be running and it will seem to have like a sneeze . So realistically, any machinery or say fuel cans, jerry cans that are left in the outdoor environment --introducing condensation to the inside of the can and as it collects it's going to contaminate your fuel. So your boats, your inboards, your outboards, jet-skis, any equipment that's left out in the marine environment is liable to have water introduced to the fuel. So, even service stations can get water in their tanks through ground water getting in. You know, it might have come from the refinery, it might have come from some storage tanks, it might have come from a pipeline, it might have come from a railcar or it might have been in the truck that delivered it to the service station. So one primary defence that you can use against getting bad fuel is to never fill up at a gas station that is being filled up old trucker's trick is to pour in a bottle of Isopropyl Alcohol. So you can try isopropyl alcohol, methyl alcohol, or ethyl alcohol. People use these things all the time and it goes back almost to the beginning of internal combustion. OK now make sure you get 99% because if you get 70%, you're just adding in more water. The idea is that water doesn't mix with fuel. It sinks to the bottom. Alcohol and water do mix -- it will mix with the water, it will burn and thereby remove the water by taking it with the alcohol. When Diesel mixes with water it does separate to a certain degree but it also causes a microbial growth that will live in the fuel itself. It becomes cloudy and I refer to it as puke or barf. It really looks awful. And you can generally contain it and keep it from getting as far as the engine using a water separator. A water separator will at least keep it contained from the water separator back to the tank and it won't get any further. Unless of course you don't service her, in which case it's just a matter of time before the microbial growth finds its way all the way in plugs it up and shuts you down.In some cases calling in a fuel polisher is the best thing. You know, if you've got some heavy equipment out in the field or a boat, say, tied to a dock somewhere or even trucks or something like that, getting a fuel polisher in is often the best solution. A fuel polisher will come in, pump all the fuel out of your container or tank or machine and they will pump it through their own filters, extract all the water, all the sediment, clean it down to about one micron and then pump it back into your machine nice and clean. Now the right thing to do is to empty the tank. And then you've got to clean it out, purge the fuel pump, purge the lines, you're going to need to clean your carburetor out or purge your injectors. With a name like Kolor Kut I honestly thought that it was a painting supplies product. Now a tank like this one might be fairly easy to get in to but yours, on your vehicle or your vessel might be a lot more challenging. Here's a thirty six inch zap-strap that you can use -- these are my favourite. You know you might be able to just use a yardstick like this one.White zap-strap that I've smeared some of this brown Kolor Kut paste -- I hope the colour is good for you. As we go through the gasoline you can see before your eyes how it changes colour very-very quickly.

Great video on educating the public about the different aspects of fuel contamination. Water finding paste is a product we swear by. Good example on how it works. Well done Repairs101

The chances of your car burning alcohol without damage are infinitely better than trying to burn water.

There's a meme going around on Facebook telling people to add a cup of water to every gallon of gas in the Spring because it will help cool the engine and clean the cylinders and cylinder walls. I wonder if people actually fall for that. Pretty messed up if they actually do.

+ActronJimmy - I've seen several including one that says be sure to run straight water instead of coolant in winter - unfortunately some gullible people are bound to pay thousands for taking bad advice off the internet.

U dont want to fill up when a tanker is at the station because the gas gets stirred up and the setiment gets into your engine

I was a trucker for over 45 years, I did use alcohol in my fuel tanks. I could look down in the tanks and see the nasty water but after the alcohol like magic it was not there. just 16 oz of this magic stuff cleaned all the water out of the tanks! Or did it Lets see 300 gals of diesel a little bit of water 16 oz of magic, I did not freeze up or have power issues (I ran socal to Calgary). Never did I have gunk or puke as you say in my tanks or fuel filters, Looks like algae.

Back in the 1990's when Florida still did Emmisions testing .my old cars would fail ..used to pour a few bottles of alchohol in my gas tank and take the air filter off and unplug a few vaccum hoses off to get more pure Air coming out the exhaust ..Always worked for me to pass..Thank god they stopped doing those test ..Poor folks cant afford to fix it correctly

Unknown to the general public, refineries started adding alcohol to gasolene in early 80's to maintain the octane rating; 87 in the case of Reg Un-leaded. Moisture will mix with the alcohol over time and will settle to the bottom of the tank. A fuel/water separator will take care of this problem unless the water contamination overwhelms separator capacity...then you will be dead in the water. Mfgrs recommend that you keep fuel tanks topped up. This mitigates the condensation problem.

@ D Wetick Can we insdal or buy water-fuel separator for gas-powered 4 stroke regular audomobiles? Think it would be eazy to insdal?(considering dint come az OEM). The carz got fuel filter but thatz just for solid sediment

Many years ago I gotta fill up, started my truck and got about 10 and that was it. Got it down the street to the mechanic and he said it was water in the tank and I was on empty so I got a full tank.

Now that most gasoline at the gas station has about 10% ethanol in it (and our vehicles can handle that), small amounts of water are likely swept out regularly, so problems of small amounts like freezing of fuel lines is likely a thing of the past.

I've left my cap off of the gas(gas oil mix for 2 stroke) can during a rain...so...I haven't used it. And I don't want to through it away...is there a way to filter that gas out before I use it?
@repairs101
@repairs101 8 лет назад
Ideally you run it through a machine that has a water separator (ie: RACOR), as seen in the video. Failing that you could set up a fuel approved pump and run the mix through a water separator. Or just let the water settle to the bottom and pour the gas off into another can and try to leave the water behind in the old can. You could even try sealing the can, flipping it upsidedown so the vent is the lowest point, waiting until it settles and pouring the water out through the vent until you see clear fuel coming out. Could get messy though. Good luck.

What if my vehicle is a flexfuel?? is it okay to try Ethyl Alcohol in it?? because mine says that it can run on E85 gas. and actually I'm starting to get suspicious about the gas station that I go to fill up my car with unleaded 87 gasolin because my car started to shake at lower speed whenever I try to hit the pedal or release it. So I thought it could be a bad gas or something that like that.
@repairs101
@repairs101 8 лет назад
+Majid Al-Zahrani - your flexfuel car can handle a small dose of alcohol but your problem sounds more like the throttle position sensor malfunctioning.

If you had to refuel on a jetski in the middle of the ocean and a wave hit and got water in your tank while refueling.... Is there anything you could do immediately to help minimize a complete break down miles and miles from shore?
@repairs101
@repairs101 8 лет назад
+Corey Harmon - I sure hope you're not floating there waiting for an answer - I would hope the designers of your vessel allowed for a good size water separator and head for shore. If it's a RACOR or similar see-through/sight glass style I would monitor it after 5 minutes of running and drain off what I could and press on for safe harbor.

+Repairs101 2013 yamaha fx cruiser HO Making a trip from Florida to Treasure Cay, Bahamas in June. Some members of my party are carrying extra emergency fuel in aux tanks that are plumbed into the main tank. This is both "expensive" and technical. I just want to bring some fuel cans. Regardless of how fancy of a fuel can, or nozzle for a fuel can, that I buy... There is an inherent risk of a wave splashing over the ski while trying to refuel. (if actually needed, which in almost all likelihood, will not be needed)

so will it mess up someone's engine?
@repairs101
@repairs101 8 лет назад
+MIKE EL - I assume you're asking about water not alcohol as I addressed that in the video - water will ultimately get past water separators and filters and as soon as it reaches fuel injectors (or the carb) the engine shuts down. Some damage to injectors may occur although carbureted engines can usually be cleaned out and run again with very little expense (beyond labor). Good luck!

@repairs101 10 лет назад
MrEricStarr As I said in the video : Alcohol is corrosive to certain metals and may cause degradation of some plastics, nylons, rubbers and corks such as are found in components like gaskets, hoses and seals. Pop a piston? I suppose the potential exists but burning a hole in one seems more likely.

lol its not a big deal if theres some water in the fuel. it just passes right thru. water injection is even desired in racing or in breaking up carbon deposits. And ethanol and water mixes, so all ethanol states... not even an issue.

True, but I'm a marine mechanic and (for example) gas outboard engines are mostly still carbureted and water in diesel can shut you down.

TampaOutlaw use Marine outboard two cycle TCW3 rated oil at 1 oz oil per 5 gallons of gasoline. You can Google LS1 been testing oil and read about the testing. It works great cleans and lubes your fuel system. The Marine oil needs to be TCW3 rated. Seafoam is expensive. You can get Walmart super tech Marine two cycle oil tcw3 rated oil at $13.00 a gallon. Remember 1 oz oil per 5 gallons gasoline is the formula.
