Watercolor Experiments | Create Effects with Simple Water Techniques

A brand new season of watercolour videos is starting this evening! This season’s theme is ‘experiment!’ and in this first video the experiments I do are all about using water in different ways. I try out spraying, dropping, lifting and getting textures with different concentrations of water and paint. You’ll see some of the experiments work better than others! I also share this abstract piece where I play with paint and water in a much more intuitive way. What form does your experimentation take? Can you think of other methods of working with paint and water? What would you add to my list of techniques?
Projects are posted for personal use only. If you'd like to licence my work commercially, please contact me for a quote. I always appreciate a credit if you post work online that you've made from following a tutorial or using my downloadable line work.

Thank you very much for this- I found it very interesting and helpful. I think both ways had some advantages but maybe if you didnt have a lot of time available the second option would be the way to go.

Love this Lou. The patterns created in the water experiment are wonderful. Like frost creeping along. It’s so satisfying to just let the pigment and water do what it wants instead of having an idea in your head. ❤️

Thanks, glad you liked it - yes it's fun letting the watercolour do what it does best! You have to give up an element of control though!

This was super fun! My favorite was painting with water and then adding bits of color in. Thank you for sharing friend.

Hi Lou, watercolour abstract is my thing and I love both controlled and loose, although I think I'm better at controlled. Sometimes I think I should sit on my dominant hand and use my non-dominant just to make it looser but my usual hand ends up taking over 😁 Love your videos 😘

Thanks, I love both too, and often feel more drawn to the controlled style, I'm hoping to develop work that makes space for both!

Love this video and can't wait to watch the others. As for my playing around with paints, when I buy new paints, I have a fairly detailed swatching I go thru. For each brand/color I use 4 types of paper, I mix the new color with my basic palette of colors and then I play around with adding salt, water drops and gauze to paint. Takes a bit of time but I love having such a detailed reference.

Hi Rachel. I really liked this whole format where you gave precise directions on each of the experiments and then showed how they could all come together in a looser style! Really looking forward to this whole series ❤

@@LouDavis I really liked the effect of the first technique. I like the gradient it makes. Also I'm more of a person who likes a set technique to try instead of just throwing paint down. When I do just go at it with paint, it doesn't turn out like I expect but I do try experimentation sometimes.

This is such a helpful and interesting video. I love all the experimentation! I can make out all the colors in this palette except the first one (top, far left). Can you tell me what it is? I love the granulation! Thank you, and I look forward to the next video!

Thanks, so glad it was helpful! The top left colour is hematite genuine from Daniel Smith. It’s very granulating!

Subscribed! I love these and especially your colour palette. Can you tell me how you kept the clean edge on the individual circular pieces with the payne’s grey please? Circular masking tape witchcraft?!
@LouDavis
@LouDavis 2 месяца назад
Thank you! Glad you like it :) on the circular ones, I painted a circle of water and dropped the paint into it - no witchcraft involved :)

Ah of course, i was so much thinking about masking tape that my brain didn’t go there, duh. Still a very neat circle tho, i might have to lightly pencil it in and rub out after 😁
