I'm late to the party, but for whatever it's worth my favorite spring flower is buffalo currant, also known as golden currant. I grew up on the rural Dakota plains and nothing tops those long-lasting orange and pink sunsets with the sweet scent of wild buffalo currant on the breeze. I think this technique will work for those, too. Thank you for sharing it!
As another viewer stated, lilacs always remind me of my childhood... love them! Loved your painting! And no, I can't imagine someone painting it realistically! Ha! 4 tiny petals!!! Also loved the Wisteria you painted 2 weeks ago... now I'm looking at another beautiful watercolor tube... Lilac... Thank 😊 you, Ellen! A California Gramma ♥️
That is beautiful. Thank you, Ellen. I am going to purchase the lilac and verditer tubes even though I promised myself: No More Watercolors. They look divine!
Thank you Ellen for a beautiful painting. I love the loose style and will try that when the lilacs are out here in England U.K. Thank you for sharing your wonderful talent with us all xx
I love gardenias too! Tried painting but whites are a pain. Mine had a creamy cast too as well as white. Left my bush behind when I moved from NC to Texas. New owners cut the bush down.
I recently discovered your channel and I am loving it. I love when you say tippy tap, and now, every time I tap colors in, I say tippy tap in my head. 😂 you are awesome. Thank you for sharing.
Oh my goodness Ellen, you have me just holding my breath waiting for me the lilacs here in New Hampshire bloom. We are so fortunate that our entire parking area is surrounded by them and they are free for the cutting ✂️😊. So sad that they only last for such a very short time. Mmmmm.......I can already smell their lovely fragrance. You have done such an exquisite painting capturing their beauty (oh dear, must I break my April 'no spend' in order to get that gorgeous Holbein lilac?). Thanks ever so much for sharing your amazing talent with us. 👩🦳🖌️
Thank you very much, Ellen. I really enjoyed the lilacs, the daisies and cornflowers, and the leaves and doodles these last two weeks. I hope I can join you for a retreat some day. Take care.
Love your relaxed style in painting the lilac! Allowed me to make mistakes and keep going while having faith my mistakes would work out. However, I got lost mixing the greens.😱 Never mind, watched a 2nd time and got it. Thank you Ellen. Any chance you have a tutorial on leaves?
I love this one too!! One question - near the end, you added a lighter tone to the dark but I didn't catch what that was...Grew up in NJ with some huge Lilac bushes in the front yard. I loved them and this brought back some great memories. I am going to give this one a stab!
I think you're asking about 'gouache', which is a water-based pigment but more opaque than watercolors. She mixed white gouache with the lilac watercolor to touch up the area that was too dark.
