You know what's great? Me and you live close by so whenever I have a problem with the lawn, you make a video about it a few days later LOL. Great video!
You are the king of lawn care. I love your videos. They are detailed, precise, to the point and of course humorous. And love the music. I learned a lot from you. God bless.
I love watching his videos. Im like a kid in a candy store waiting for his advice. Cant wait for his videos on his new home and complete lawn rehab. I really need some direction with my new construction lawn.
Another great video Allen. What I like most about your LCN videos is that you give answers to questions that most people don't even think to ask. You should have Jake-The-Lawn-Kid do recon and document the fate of your lawn once you move. Oh, and we need more craft beer.
***** thanks! and Jake The Lawn Kid will keep us informed of how the lawn looks over time. As far as beer, I had to give it up when I went gluten free -- but I've taken to wine very nicely :)
In BC, Canada we're in a minor drought, it's rained once since June and sprinkled 2 times, and we're under some pretty strict water restrictions right now, I'm wanting to start a lawn mowing business but the grass hasn't really grown more than an inch in the last 3 months, I hope we get lot's of rain in the fall/winter.
Jethro Bodine it did come back, but I got blasted with heat again yesterday afternoon and it started to sink back again. Crazy how days over 90 degrees can do that here. Lawns do NOT like that much heat up this far north.
+The Lawn Care Nut It's 101 degrees here right now.. everyone's grass is yellow.. It's more depressing than winter, all yellow. trees dieing etc.. It's amazing how great your lawn is looking though.. gj :)
Allyn!, my lawn domination is devistated right now. The Northeast here in Mass has been SOOOOOO HOT AND DRY so far this summer......anywhere there isn't shade, my lawn is TOAST!!!! My only hope is the drought and the heat ends soon. I have a well here at my home, and an expensive well pump, and frankly, I can't justify burning out my pump or drying out my well to keep my lawn green. Gonna have to be patient I guess. You mentioned bring lawn in and out of dormancy if NOT good for the lawn, better off just letting it go and come back on it's own..?? so I am sticking with that.....thoughts...comments welcome....thanks for all you do for "the lawn" :-)
MrShmoopster If I am to be honest, the lawn got away from me here - being gone for 5 days during the heat blast put it pretty far into the dormant phase. It will recover in fall no prob though.
Tell us more about the disease. I have the same stuff showing up in my lawn. I think it's because all the rain we had this year. I never had it before.
Thanks! Came back yesterday from a week vacation and my lawn was the same grey/white look, brought it back overnight though! Very odd to see in person.
I am in St Louis and have watered my lawn for the first time this year last Saturday. Cut it high, Milorganite and Ironite and rain later this week. Maybe I will get by with minimal watering. Only problem I have is nutgrass/nutsedge. Need a video on that.
Wow you guys do get a lot of sun over there :) not like us here in Ireland :) with all that rain don't have to worry about lawn getting dry :) lol Thumbs up from me! :)
What really surprised me is I thought you had a sprinkler system lol You put a lot of work into your lawn I just assumed you would of put in a watering system is there a reason behind not doing so.
Great video. You quickly mentioned disease, I was wondering if you haven't already covered this topic, would you? One disease I've recently encountered was red thread and it seems to be spreading rapidly. Thank you for the great videos, I've learned a lot!
Anthony Gobeil I have not done too much on disease really. Red THread, however, is typically a spring problem. So you are probably just seeing the leftover damage - unless something else has piggy-backed into the lawn this summer - maybe dollar spot. Either way, fungicides applied BEFORE the problem occurs are your best bet. It's just not something I mess with since my lawn can out-grow most of these problems in time.
Great video. I have a question, Our summers in Southern California are brutal with temperature reaching the 108 degrees Fahrenheit. My lawn took a beating. I just recently subscribed and I am a beginner when it comes to Lawn Care. I do have St. Augustine grass on my front lawn. I was wondering how can I bring it back to life. I have brown spots, bald spots, and some semi alive spots. Your advice is greatly appreciated.
Hey LCNut! I've just moved into a new place in socal where the summer heat gets pretty harsh! I've got a giant tree shading most of my yard but was wondering what the best way to take advantage of watering during the summer when the state sets restrictions on water usage. Would it be best to water at night or what might be some ways to avoid my yard from just completely dying and drying up in the summer?
So, is the new lawn going to take 2 years to bring back to perfection? Is it in a different zone? Is it out west I sure hope it's not in a drought ridden area cuz you'll go NUTZ!
This may have already been asked, didn't feel like lookig through all the comments, but I'm assuming if I'm on restrictions (Wednesday & Saturday) only, and at certain times, I should water deep, 1-1/2" to 2" in the evenings on those 2 days of the week?
Should not water in middle of day (not because of the myth that it will burn the lawn) but because most of the water will be lost to evaporation and not get down deep to the roots. So best to water in early morning. Late in day is also no good since it will make the lawn be wet at night & lead to diseases like fungus.
Thanks so much for your videos. One question, does it matter the time of day you water your lawn. I was always told to water in the morning, is this correct? Thank you much!
In regards to your sprinkler, do you find that the area under the high shooting stream gets less water than the area that is under the low shooting stream?
Great video. Do u plan to continue your videos at the new house. I have my parents lawn which is really not a lawn at all and Iwas hoping you would use the new house to show how to start from scratch.
Allyn, curious to get your thoughts on the use of "wetting agents" as part of a lawn care plan. I've read reviews on various products out there that came to assist with water penetration and retention in the soil. Do you have any experience with these products from your previous employment? Any comments are appreciated:)
LCNut, This year I hope to make beautiful stripes, I just got a new mower for the season, it's a mulcher/bagger with no grass shoot, can you tell me what type of fertilizer and iron is good for grass yards?
S where did you find that rain gauge. Put down the gauge I have watered in one area for an hour trying to find out how much my oscillating sprinkler puts out in an hour. Mine didn't so 1/4 inch in that area. Moved to another area showed an inch. So I think I need a shorter gauge. This was a big Walmart special.
I feel you on getting hit with disease, we were getting crazy rains here in VA and the lawn grew like crazy and as soon as the rain stopped and the heat came my lawn showed signs of summer patch : (. How do I recover from this? Do I wait until Sept to scalp the dead patches and reseed?
Will Martinez you can apply a general purpose fungicide if you like - it will stop any further damage. The lawn will recover in fall either way. I typically don't use chems, I just let the lawn do it's thing and it responds well.
wow this is why I don't go on vacation at all or go out long distance anywhere with my parents because I fear if this happens to my entire lawn I would be darn depressed
love your videos! Wondering if you could give me some tips. I have my very own lawn for the first time in my life. I planted the grass in spring. Most of it came up but I have a lot of weeds and a LOT of bare spots. Some of it is also brownish. I have put fertilizer on it recently but it is slow release. I want to reseed it this fall. Do you have any videos on reseeding? or any tips? Thanks
Thank you. I watched that serious. Great help. I have a couple questions though if you dont mind. As far as spreading seed, how do you make sure it has contact with the soil? Second, I was always told to never spray weed killers until your grass is a year old. I see you sprayed right after you spread the seed. I am assuming this is ok since you did it. Third, is starter fertilizer quick releasing? Thanks again!
Any recommendations on how to water a 26,000 square foot lawn? It seems like moving an impact sprinkler like that around to get the whole yard would take all day. I want to overseed this fall, but am worried it will be a waste if I can't water it all regularly.
+JesseOsby If you are unable to irrigate properly due to size of the lawn, then just seed a section this fall, then another section next spring and so on. Break down the work in sections that you can manage.
At mark 9 min 30 secs I realized I'm stupid for trying to water my lawn back and sides which nobody can see, man I'm wasting $. Anyways my lawn is brown, should have used these resources for the front. But I'll be smiling when my lawn is green during winter . Transition zone fescue!
Shay Linton Let it go dormant for the summer.. I'm guessing you have bermuda grass? Unless you want to waste your money, I would let it go dormant until late september.. It will come back just as healthy, so you shouldn't worry.. Just give it a bit of water every week to keep it alive and no more.. Hope it helps :) Oh and near the dallas, austin, and san antonio area, there will be some T-Storms on Thursday and Friday.. Good Luck!!
Why is it that the neighbor’s grass who doesn’t really do anything to their lawn seem to always look better in drought/heat stressed situations then those of us who do take meticulous care?
You've either gotta change the PH in your dogs urine down to a 6.5 by diet or dilute the urine concentration on the actual lawn immediately after they go... just water in where your dog is peeing with either the hose or a small pail of water right away.
I'm not the LCN but if it goes dormant, it just means its stressed from heat and lack of rain. Don't worry if you can't keep up with watering, its ok to let it go. I do it to my side yard and once cooler temperatures and rain return, it comes back quickly. Hope that helps!
Rich's Fishes that is kind of a myth. If the lawn very very very dry and got only a fine misting, you could have some issues, but typically that isn't going to happen
The only problem is waste due to evaporation. It is best of you choose a sprinkler with a larger water droplet versus one that throws more of a mist. It is best to water early in the morning. I try and now in the evening that way the lawn can rest overnight and if needed will water the next am. Luckily we have had plenty of rain that I only watered once this year.
Still waiting for someone to make a 10-10-10 "balanced" fertilizer with all the macro's and micro's in it. Tired of all these so called fertilizers that only have say two ingredients. Your lawn is missing out on a lot of other nutrients.
I see a difference in your lawn, but I don't see a difference in your hair from your haircut! LOL I don't think striping your lawn is such a good idea when it gets over 90 degrees. It exposes more of the grass blade to the direct rays of the sun. Just a thought. Four 90+ days is nothing. We probably got about 40+ straight days of 90 degree temperatures here in Atlanta, mostly in the mid-90s. :-O That's why Bermuda grass is king down here, although I hate Bermuda grass.... Too invasive and it stays dormant in the winter too frikin long. It basically looks like crap for five to six months, November through March or April.
alan30189 I can completely agree.. Here in texas, it's 103 here right now.. and this is a constant.. Bermuda grass is even going dormant.. I do not like Bermuda grass because of how needy it is.. It sure likes water etc.. We're getting our yard redone with geo-zoysia grass.. It's just like Bermuda grass except more heat resistant and less water needing.. It makes for a more attractive lawn with a dark green color..
Simsky Zoysia is probably better, as you stated, but it is very invasive, and I hate that. Bermuda holds up to heat pretty well as long as it doesn't dry out. We need a heat tolerant fescue or bluegrass developed, but they will take a lot of water.
I'm actully trying to grow fescue in a pot right now.. the reason for this is to see if it even will grow in the heat.. It's a way to test a seed out without wasting to much money.. Kinda crazy idea, but it's working.. I'll tell you if it thrives in this weather.. It's a tall fescue blend which is a bit heat ressistant and grows in clumps, it won't spread but it will grow thick.. If you want me to tell you how it's doing feel free to as ask :)
Simsky Unless you water it every day, or every other day at least, a pot will heat up and dry out quickly. It may be better to test it in a bare area of your lawn, in the sun. I am not sure about "clumping" types of fescue, but yes, let me know how it does. Cheers!
alan30189 I am aware of it drying out.. but that is just part of the test.. Right now it is just starting to sprout.. Although Zoysia is invasive.. It is soft, dark green, slow growing, and easy to maintain.. (Geo Zosyia) we just got our yard redone and I am loving it so far.. I sort of like the invasive nature of it because it will fill in the bare spots.. Bermuda was rapid and sloppy, but Geo Zoysia seems to be slow and neat.. If you are looking for a tall fescue lawn for the heat.. You could try out Scotts Thermal Blue Mix.. It's 94% Different Brands of tall fescue and 6% Heat Tolerant Kentucky Bluegrass. It's also water coated and easy too use.. I've had a bit of success with it.. I would plant in fall or spring though.. when temperatures are between 60-75 Fahrenheit,
Lady Gunsmith it's just that when you water in full sun, some of the water gets evaporated. I had no choice, however, since I had to get this done over the weekend.
Sorry for ask this question, can I used a part of your video ( 1-3 seconds) to our photography's homework?ㄒ0ㄒ Hope you can accept it. Wait for your reply. Thank you so much.
LCN - your bride is super hot and should make an appearance in every video. I know she hates to be in them but... with all due respect. Thank you for all you do.
