The Waters of Mars is, in my opinion, the final masterpiece from the Tenth Doctor’s run, as it neatly concludes the darker aspects of his storylines, setting him up perfectly for regeneration. But what do you think? Let me know below!
This is the start of what will be an ongoing series of reviews of Doctor Who episodes from 2005 onwards, so please let me know below what ones you’d like me to cover! Whether that’s praising greatness, re-appraising ones that are controversial or received a mixed reception, or looking at why the bad ones didn’t work.

And of course we must not forget the other potential reason why he went over the edge just at this point (likely the two added together), a conviction that if he can avert a fixed point in time, then surely he can beat his own prophecied demise.

Very true. It's not confirmed quite like 11s where it's a certain fixed point, (although I have my questions about The Wedding of River Song too) but it definitely has to be on his mind. We know how desperate he is to keep his incarnation.

Maybe he thought he could save the timelords

When I first saw the Waters of Mars, I never knew there were 5 specials in a row. I didn't understand what the knocking noise meant. So it was an absolute surprise and joy when I discovered the other 4 a few years ago and got to watch them all. Tennant was my favourite Doctor and more of him is always good in my book. And Rose will always be my favourite companion. So my most loved episode(s) are the last 2 of season 2. I know a lot of people disagree with that but screw it. It's the only time I've seen the Doctor get that close to someone. I also loved the Bad Wolf storyline. It was a bit contrived at times but I appreciated the reveal of all the subtle clues hidden in the previous episodes. On a side note, you mentioned how the Doctor needs the companions to restrain him. While this is definitely true, it made me wonder - if he never had companions, would he have become another Master?

@donkeysunited It's an interesting question. I think his natural conscience means he wouldn't be able to be a tyrant for long periods of time like the Master, but he undoubtedly could do some horrific things thinking he was doing good. What do you think?

@@DarthNerdus1 He does get carried away at times :) I think he could wipe out a species in a fit of righteousness and then feel huge remorse. I don't know what would happen then. Perhaps in an attempt to reverse what he did, he'd accidentally destroy space and time. He's a dangerous guy. Thankfully he has had some good companions.

Great analysis. To me this is not only one of the best episodes of Doctor Who, but also one of the best episodes of all SF series. Apart from all the story and character aspects you detailed, another reason I like this episode is the details they made with the Mars base. The story is set in 2059, so in the near future, yet their security systems and processes are superior to those seen in many movies and series set hundreds of years in the future. This is an aspect that I really appreciate. As to what episodes to review next I don't know. Possibly one of the multi-episode stories like Inferno or The Pyramids of Mars. Or will you only be reviewing episodes from NuWho? If the latter, then maybe Heaven Sent.

Thank you so much 😀 I do love Heaven Sent, it's peak Capaldi, and an episode I'm not sure any other modern Doctor could quite pull off.

This is one episode that I have been returning to repeatedly lately. The entire run of Tennant's doctor is a masterpiece in storytelling. While the following seasons were entertaining, I never found them to be as well constructed nor as compelling as Tennant's run.

I really do enjoy some of the later arcs, (cracks in time for example), but Tennant's era certainly has some fantastic storytelling. For me this is the peak of it 🙂

@@DarthNerdus1 Yes, I found them to be good entertainment over all but Tennant's run was so compelling. A perfect example of The Hero's Journey where his true adversary was actually himself. There are just so many layers.
