Fun facts: * The earliest Wave 2.0 units were marked as PPG Wavecomputer 360C. * The PPG 340 waveform generator in the 340/380 was used to generate the waveforms for the 360 and later systems.
I grew up in the late 70s/early 80s, and that's when I fell in love with synth sounds. There is no substitute for the richness and depth of sound the old synths put out!
Gorgeous. Palm must have come from the future. Now you can get some of his softsynths running on an iPad. Kind of strange to think. But this was the magical sound that changed the audio world. Ahead of his time.
The circuits become unstable creating a bit of a mess which sounds more pleasing to our ears than pure perfection. My Juno-6 sounded a bit boring when I bought it new back in 1983 compared to today.
Inconsistencies, non-linearities, and a focused design. Many modern devices try to be too much and have no identity and cumbersome user interfaces. This makes it difficult to achieve desirable sounds quickly.
because of sensibility & talent of its user. I can make the vintage/mellow/eerie tone you want only with decent VST on a cheap computer. The thing you need is sensibility & talent, otherwise everything you make with any instrument, old or new, is an empty shell. NEVERTHELESS, yes, it remains a lot easier with pure analogue stuff to sound "warmer", if you know how to make it sound like a bad dream...
I have 2 Access Virus C’s and a couple of friends always scoff and say the TI is way better. I cant put my finger on exactly what it is , but TI just has “metallicness” that I don’t like.. Virus C always seems less harsh. TI is unskimmed milk C is clotted cream
I have an album called Eyeball with Jasper Van't Hof that had some real nice tracks with the PPG 360. You can already hear those Kiew Mission Tangerine Dream sounds in this video! Just lovely...
Wszystko co tworzysz na swoich instrumentach jest tym co najbardziej kocham w muzyce elektronicznej. Brakuje mi słów by wyrazić co czuję. Ten klimat muzyczny jest jak w najlepszym okresie twórczości Tangerine Dream. Słucham tego i łzy płyną mi do oczu. Dzięki za wszystko !
@@seb17320 "Heritage Survival" z płyty "The Keep" lub "Charly the kid" z płyty "Firestarter" czyli wszystko co najlepsze wniósł w twórczości Tangerine Dream Johannes Schmoelling słyszę w Twoim utworze. Gratulacje ! " Tangerine spirit" jest fantastyczny ! Kiedy wydasz swoją płytę z muzyką elektroniczną ?
Origin and heart of the famous PPG wave sounds. Nice to hear and see! Glimpse from the inside shows it has likely the same lack of roadworthiness as the PPG wave. Awesome instruments, but don't put them on transport. So glad, because of that, with my Microwave 1.
Astonishing music and instrument :D This had Yamaha beat by half a decade...Yamaha poured tens of millions in R&D into Chowning FM, a dozen protos and the GX-1 & DX-1... and the DX7 _still_ could not hold this synth's jockstrap.
That's because Edgar Froese used a PPG 360. Not completely sure about Force Majeure, but definitely Tangram and Exit, not to mention his own solo album Stuntman, and perhaps Kamikaze 1989 (I don't have the latter, though).
Agree with all the comments praising this piece. As a fan of early 80's TD, this is true bliss. Mr seb17320 seems to produce some of the most TD-like posts - and that is a very good thing indeed. This and "Tangerine Spirit" are both well within my all time top 10 on RU-vid. Great work.
wow, and for 1978 this would have been a real technical achievement. Makes me wonder why this 360 isn't as much in the headlines as the Fairlight, P5, JP8, Emu II etc.
@@inversion66 most of the bigger Italian studios used PPG a lot , and the most of Palms ideas got pillaged by sequential and Roland d50 in cheaper alternatives but the magical sound was never equalled, PPG is right up there with moog and arp in the history of synths
Even through the mess of YT compression algo this is one of the most beautiful little tunes of synthesized magic that I've had the pleasure of hearing in 45+ years of life. I'd really appreciate a Flac or non-lossy file, possibly? or... better yet, VINYL. *Thank You* MOSLAB/Seb(?)/whoever produced this. They say Eno's music heals, and I can see why.... but _this_ is the 'moment of attaining balance' thing for me, and what David Lynch is always getting at. Right here.👋💛
I'm guessing that the unique sound comes from how the digital info is stored and how it's converted to analogue before going through the analogue filter? Btw great piece of music.
Sometimes I think, I shouldn‘t have sold mine. But, at least, I know: it was limited. I liked its rude output. Later ppg was less harsh, in my oppinion.
your music here has much in common (timbre and melodically) with 80's Belgian electronic group Trisomie 21; I wonder if you've heard this group before? I've always found their sound very unique and haunting, and now I have to wonder if they weren't using this PPG instrument on some of their mid-80s work, such as "Million Lights".
They are from France not Belgium ,no they did not use PPG , almost exclusive they used a lot of Roland d50, s50 samples, they we're on the Belgian play it again Sam label , the d50 borrowed from the PPG so did the prophet VS but they are way more conventional sounding
@@cnfuzz that’s interesting, I guess I just assumed they were Belgian because of the label, as you say. I don’t believe the D50 was available when they made the albums I know best: “Chapter IV” and “Million Lights.” Although I’ve owned these albums since they were released, I still know almost nothing about the group. I appreciate the info.
Is there no VST that mimics these PPG sounds ? The Waldorf PPG VST does not offer these sounds. Is there one that does ? If not, I guess there is a market for it.
What is the biggest difference between the version with 1 row buttons and this one, which has two rows next to the sliders. This question i ask is because my dad had the version with 1 row of buttons. So this is the synth i played on in my youth.
