Poor Berdych... He played lights out in AO 2012 and 2014 but still couldn't make it the finals. Unlucky that he had to face God-mode Nadal and Wawrinka :/
Pomerlain89 I’m pretty sure it was only one set point, at 6-5. And after Berdych missed the volley Nadal was lights out for the rest of the match. His returning was unbelievable in the fourth set
davd1986 I was just about to say something along those lines. It looked more to me like they genuinely get along off the court as well. Berdych was smiling...after a loss...that’s very unusual of him
@@jbobbster Almagro is a much bigger dick than Wawrinka and he's been known to have temper tantrums before. I don't particularly like Berdych, but I don't blame him for not wanting to shake Almagro's hand. I don't think Berdych 'learned' anything, he didn't have anything to learn.
People talk about Big 3, then the next gen.... But people truly forgot the tennis we had 7-15 years ago. Big 4, Berdych, Wawrinka, Ferrer, Soderling, Roddick, Delpo, Tsonga, Verdasco, Davydenko, Nalbandian, Blake, Baghdatis, Safin, Hewitt. Man these guys at their prime will destroy any next gen no problem when fit.
@@MrPatrickbuitmy brother in Christ this is a pointless conversation but Berdych and Sinner would definitely be a good matchup. We must remember this prime Berdych took prime Wawrinka to a very tight 4 set match. Whilst the round before Wawrinka ousted a prime Djokovic 9-7 in the 5th. Wawrinka is no slouch here. And a couple points here and there this match could’ve been different. Berdych is arguably the best player to never win a slam. I still think that title goes to Nalbandian but nonetheless he has made semis or better at all 4 slams, has wins over prime Federer and has 13 titles to his name. The win over Federer in Athens 2004 is the most surprising. Ill be shook if Sinner could beat Federer in 2004. Maybe he could who knows. But beating Federer from 2004-2007 outside the french open was literally unheard of. But Berdych did it.
Berdych had the better career up to this tournament and really this match turned their fortunes around. Wawrinka won three slams and been to the final of another and Berdych stagnated and went downhill (thanks in part to injuries). It's interesting how the guys just below the big three (and Murray I suppose) were above Wawrinka (Berdych, Tsonga, Ferrer, Gasquet, Cilic-though Cilic did carve himself a nice career since 2014 as well with a US Open title, a final at Wimbledon in 2017 and Australia in 2018), but Wawrinka just exploded here. I think Wawrinka finally broke through at a slam in 2013, with that epic against Djokovic. He made it to the QF of the French semi of the US Open in 2013 (Losing again to Djokovic in 5 sets) and it gave him confidence for 2014 and beyond. He surpassed all his contemporaries apart from the big three and Murray.
nah, they had like 10+ years time to win against federer, nadal, djokovic in slams, they didn't do it, almost every time they lost 0-3 against them 10 x 4 GS = 40 Slams ,they couldn't win 1 , they don't deserve.
Somehow I never took Berdych seriously. Maybe I didn't see enough of his matches and saw too many highlights of Federer making him look foolish. But Berdych was serving like a beast in this match, and his backhand cross court was killer. Newfound respect for Berdych!
Exactly my thoughts lol , also jusst realized how clean Berdych's ground game is - except for a lack of plan .. he's got crisp strokes and a beautiful serve!
Wawrinka was able to reinvent his career especially after Norman became his coach - he kept searching until he found the answer to winning a grand slam. It was very smart of him to get Norman who had a fantastic run with Soderling, one of the few people to beat Nadal on Clay @ French Open. Tatoo on Wawrinka says what it took: "Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better." He failed, learnt and evolved into a champion. He might win wimbledon and complete the grand slam :)
People forget that at this point in their careers wawrinka and berdych were very similar in trajectory. The more I think about it this match is when wawrinka ascended into a tennis legend and berdych started to fade out.
Berdych was way better than Wawrinka until 2012/2013. Berdych was a constant top 10 player and had a m1000 win in 2005 with Wawrinka sitting barely inside the top 20 for many years. IMO, Berdych slowly got better heading into the 2010s while Wawrinka just eclipsed him in 2013 and played like a big 4 member at slams.
Berdych is so unfortunate to have not won a slam. He's had the big three and Murray in his way and then when he thought he had a chance with Wawrinka beating Djokovic, Wawrinka had to show him that he's too good for him lol.
24:12 that forehand...if Berdych got that right and deeper he would still be on the point, and winning it would've given him set point. I think that point was more critical than even the ones in the tie break
@@ChrisPBacon-lu6wd Why? Thiem is beating the top3 consistently over the past 3 years, no one has a positive h2h against him in the past 3 years.... The guy is extremely good. Berdych was a punch bag for the big 3, no way he deserve a slam.
@@nikolaramic over three years? Nah. Yes, he's doing that right now and last year, but these dudes are getting old and Thiem is in a good period in his age and career. If you put prime Berdych right now, I think he would do the same if not more.
@@nikolaramic Oh come on man. Did you watch Wimbledon 2010 or one of the many other GSs where Berdych reached the quarters or semis? He clearly had it in him to win a GS, if Del Potro, Wawrinka and Cilic got slams then Berdych deserves one two imo. He was consistently in the top 10 for over 5 years.
If Berdych had won this match it could have been his one and only moment in the final. Kinda feel bad for Berdych I think he should have won one slam at-least
I remember this match very well knowing Wawrinka was pretty much depleted (from the match against Djokovic). Luckily, Berdych does not play very long rallies (mostly) which worked in Wawinka's favor. Then, Wawrinka could rest for quite some time (nearly 3 days iirc) and beat Rafa, although Rafa got injured.
Berdych played lights out and still lost. But wawrinka wasn’t able to hit the spectacular winners against him that he was hitting against Novak in the previous match. Also, wonderful sportsmanship from Berdych at the end. He was kind of a jerk at the start of his career but retired a gentleman.
I still think Berdych and Ferrer could compete or even win against "Next Generations" current in top10. Poor they lived in the primes of the most greatests.
berdych's movement is is his weakness in this match. wawrinka will hit him out wide on the forehand and go back behind him to the forehand nearly every time in these highlights. difficult to know how he can make up for that. maybe if he was more aggressive when he did have a shot, particularly against these better players
+Austin Luker The problem with Berdych has always been he can't open up the court. Pretty much all his shots are linear, instead of moving off the court. And if an opponent can open him up with angles, he's going to be in trouble. It's why guys like Wawrinka and DelPo have done well against him, and the reason the Big Four own him.
The guy is 6'5/6'6 and he's built like a tank. I think he move alright for his size. You can't really expect someone that big and strong to move like someone that's a 5'9/5'10 lightweight.
Guys like DelPo and Cilic are a tad taller, and move much better and defend better than Berdych. They also have better shape on their shots to open up the court more.
