Welcome back! Join me today as I discuss Wayne Rooney, taking a look at his managerial history and his style of management before explaining his tactics, using his Derby County side as an example before taking a look at what the future could look like for the former Manchester United forward.

Born in Liverpool on the 24th October 1985, Wayne Rooney is the Derby County manager.
Widely considered to be one of the best English footballers of all time, Rooney played almost 700 games in his career, winning 16 major honours with Manchester United and a whole host of individual awards. Finishing off his playing career in central midfield, Rooney took on a player-coach role at Derby County in August 2019, eventually being named as interim manager in November 2020. Taking over whilst the club were last in the Championship, Rooney guided the club to safety on the final day of the season but after years of owner, Mel Morris, overspending, breaching FFP laws and entering into administration, Derby County have endured a 21 point deduction for the 2021 - 22 season. Despite that, Rooney’s Derby have made up the 21 point deficit and without it, would actually be in midtable. Despite the restrictions on player acquisitions, the wage budget and the points deductions, Rooney is salvaging the situation with results on the pitch, using youth prospects to bolster the first team and his reputation within the game to squeeze the most out of his players.
► CHECK US OUT ON TWITCH: bit.ly/SMDTwitch
Tactically, Wayne Rooney has favoured a 4-2-3-1 but he has used variations of a flat midfield 3 as well as two strikers in a 4-4-2. Regardless of the starting shape, Rooney’s principles remain the same as he looks to play defensively solid but quite direct football often his teams will play short around the back then launch a direct pass into the forwards. Without the ball his side drops into a 4-4-1-1 but depending on personnel this could be a 4-5-1. From this starting position, they try to push their opponents away from goal which often sees a central midfielder step up to create a 4-1-4-1 pressing structure or the number 10 joins the striker to create a 4-4-2.
In possession, Rooney’s Rams try to build out from the goalkeeper, often creating a 3-1 build up shape. In their own half, whilst Rooney instructs his players to keep possession, Derby are still quite direct. Using a 4-3-3 as the starting shape, the DM, centre backs and even the goalkeeper look to go direct to the wide areas, often looking to get a winger on the ball early. Meanwhile the outside midfielders tend to look for balls in behind, both along the ground and over the top. When attacking, Derby’s shape transitions to a 2-3-4-1, with the wingers operating from the half spaces and the full backs holding the width. Rooney does instruct his players to move the opposition around with short passes, creating 1 v 1s in the wide areas. Most frequently, the nominal wingers try to send in a cross as quickly as possible but if they're held up, we do see players make underlapping runs before crossing low.

So what’s next for Wayne Rooney? Seeing the season out and keeping Derby in the Championship would be an incredible achievement but it still seems impossible. Meanwhile, the vacant Everton job would be a great opportunity to apply his tactical identity on better players. Who knows, maybe we’ll see Rooney return to the Manchester United dugout as a manager. Once upon a time he was playing in one of the best attacking sides of all time, playing for a manager whose tactics would still dominate today.
But anyway guys what do you think? Have you been impressed by Wayne Rooney’s coaching career so far? And will he keep Derby in the Championship this season? Drop your thoughts in the comments below!

Ballsiest man in football right now, not giving up on Derby is admirable, I found a new level of respect for this man.

People used to be very critical of Rooney's intelligence, I never got it. He definitely has high football IQ and a work-hard and team-first mentality. Whether he played Cf, CM, left or right, he never looked out of place.

Fr I don't know how people can say that. When I was a kid he became my fav player, even then I saw that this player had so much game sense, and gave in everything for the team and contributed alot for the team. I think give him few years and hed became a good manager.

Great insight obviously he's no where near the finished article but as you've demonstrated Dave there's massive potential with Wayne and he's got a lot going for him. Great content as always 👍

Derby fan here. When Rooney was brought to the club I thought it was a PR stunt, when Morris made him Manager I thought it was the cheap option, I was certainly wrong on the Manager appointment. I'm a realist and doubt we can survive relegation this season, to be honest I have serious doubts whether the club will survive given how the potential takeover is progressing. None of this is down to Rooney but rather the reckless spending of Morris who has taken Derby to the very brink of going out of business before walking away and abandoning the club to its fate. I know many fans will give scant sympathy to the current plight at Derby but just remember one man did this and any owner could do it. I hope not but it could be your team next! No matter what the final outcome for Derby Rooney has shown he can be considered to be a credible Manager, nowhere near the finished article but he has experienced more at Derby than most managers experience in 20 years of management.

Well explained. Given the squad at Derby, one of the best defences and half the squad academy players, Rooney is doing an excellent job.

I feel like if Rooney was incharge of a team higher up he’d show his true style whilst not managing at the highest too soon

Wayne has done a good job especially under the exacting circumstances and by creating a siege mentality among the playing squad (and supporters). Wayne should continue to learn his trade for a couple of seasons at least before eventually managing his hometown club, Liverpool with someone like Moyes.

I don't think it's in Rooney's interest to leave for Everton, or United. Not yet. There's very little for him to lose here and little pressure. All the Derby fans know that staying up is unlikely and he won't be blamed if we go down. But at Everton or United there would be a lot more pressure to get results. Look at how it worked for Lampard
