Part of CMLC’s15-year anniversary celebrations, Ways of Working is an in-person story series that takes viewers inside the organization to learn first-hand from its team members what makes CMLC tick and why its downtown redevelopment efforts have been so successful.
Through nine videos, we’re showing Calgarians how CMLC’s diverse people complement one another and empower the organization to deliver on its bold city-building mandate.
In this sixth video in our Ways of Working series, join VP of Finance and Corporate ServicesKo Bwanali as he talks about CMLC’s unique funding mechanism and how it ensures the redevelopment underway in Calgary’s Rivers District maintains its momentum.
Calgary’s Community Revitalization Levy, or CRL, was the first funding mechanism of its kind in Canada when it was created in 2007. As property values increase in the Rivers District, a portion of the property taxes generated is redirected into new infrastructure projects for the district. It’s a self-sustaining, self-perpetuating model that fuels the momentum of CMLC’s work and keeps the organization and its people clearly focused on the future. Ko and his team of CPAs, CAs and accounting experts ensure the vision for the district is ambitious, transparent and feasible.
Ko’s keen financial management and foresight allow CMLC to continue shaping the Rivers District into the thriving and vibrant community envisioned from the beginning.
